茄子沒有蛋, 漢堡沒有火腿, 鳳梨既無蘋果也沒有梨. 以上這句,用中文來講,保證你丈二金剛摸不著頭腦. 用英文來看,就懂了:

There is no egg in eggplant, nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple.

鬆糕不是英國發明的,薯條也不是法國發明的. 這句話不看英文,感受不出它的趣味.

English muffins weren't invented in England or French fries in France…

下面這句如照字面上譯是: 甜肉是糖果,但甜麵包不甜,是肉. 也保證你看不懂.

Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads, which aren't sweet, are meat.

還有些英文跟字面意思相反,例如

 流沙速度慢,拳擊場是方的,實驗鼠既非來自幾內亞,也不是豬.

quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.

英文有時沒有道理,莫名其妙. 例如一顆牙齒是tooth,兩顆以上是teeth;但電話亭或長統靴 booth 的複數,卻不是beeth.

一隻鵝是goose,兩隻以上的鵝是geese,但糜鹿moose的複數卻不是 meese.

英文的 out 也有不同意義: 它可作[出來]解,也可作[沒有]解. 例如:

when the stars are out, they are visible,

but when the lights are out, they are invisible.

當星星出來時,你看得見,但當光熄滅時,你看不見.  以上這些,用中文譯,遠比不上直接看英文有趣.
