A small, agile bat species known for its impressive echolocation abilities, Kuhl’s pipistrelle (Pipistrellus kuhlii) weighs just 6 grams and navigates complex environments with ease, making it an ideal subject for studies on sensory navigation. Credit: Jens Rydell Researchers have discovered that Kuhl’s pipistrelle bats can navigate several kilometers using just echolocation. By blindfolding the bats and employing a novel GPS system, the study conducted in Northern Israel revealed that these bats create mental acoustic maps to orient themselves, even without the aid of vision. Bats’ Incredible Navigation Abilities Researchers blindfolded Kuhl’s pipistrelle bats and tracked their movements using innovative GPS technology, discovering that these tiny creatures can navigate over several kilometers relying solely on echolocation. The findings reveal bats’ impressive ability to create and use detailed mental acoustic maps of their environment. Echolocating bats are adept at dodging obstacles and catching small prey with only sound. However, echolocation has a limited range and is highly directional, detecting objects only within a few dozen meters—making it less effective for long-distance navigation compared to senses like vision. Additionally, it remains unclear how well bats can perceive their surroundings in three dimensions or use environmental echoes as stable landmarks. These questions are challenging to explore due to the difficulties of tracking such small, nocturnal, and agile animals, leaving the extent to which bats can depend entirely on echolocation for long-distance navigation an open question. Video from the paper showing a reconstructed map of the valley. Credit: Xing Chen Experimental Approach and Methodology Aya Goldshtein and colleagues explored the sensory modalities and navigation strategies of Kuhl’s pipistrelle (Pipistrellus kuhlii), a tiny echolocating bat weighing just 6 grams. In a field experiment in Northern Israel, the researchers captured and relocated wild bats roughly 3 kilometers from their roosts to 1 of 2 unfamiliar locations within their home range. By depriving the bats’ sensory inputs, including vision via blindfolding, while keeping echolocation intact, and tracking the animals using a novel, miniature reverse GPS tracking system in near real-time, the team examined how the bats navigated back to their roost. Findings on Bats’ Navigation Techniques The findings show that bats can navigate over several kilometers using only echolocation and that, when available, also use vision to improve navigation performance. Notably, both sighted and blindfolded bats could not sense their roost directly. Initially, bats flew in a meandering pattern, likely to gather acoustic information from their surroundings, before transitioning to a direct flight toward their destination. The observation that distinct and detailed acoustic landmarks guided navigation suggests they use a mental acoustic map of their home range to orient themselves. Moreover, the authors found no evidence that bats use magnetic sensing or olfaction to aid navigation. A Swedish study shows that providing food for small birds during winter results in healthier birds with better immune response. As birds face new pathogens due to climate change and human activity, understanding factors like winter feeding is important for their survival. Seeds and fat balls do more than just fill small birds’ stomachs. New research from Lund University in Sweden shows that feeding during the wintertime causes birds to be healthier, since they do not have to expend as much energy fighting infections. A small change in body temperature can be fatal for humans. Small birds, meanwhile, lower their body temperature at night by several degrees during the winter. Just like us, the birds attempt to save energy when it is cold. If they are exposed to infection, the body’s first reaction is to raise its temperature, which clashes with the bird’s simultaneous need to save energy by lowering body temperature. “We investigated how access to food during winter affected the balancing act between maintaining a low body temperature in order to save energy, and the possibility of raising body temperature in order to fight infection,” says Hannah Watson, a biologist at Lund University. The study shows that birds who were fed during the winter did not need to lower their body temperature as much at night as birds who did not have access to feeding tables. They had gathered enough energy to survive a winter night in spite of a having higher body temperature. When the birds were exposed to a simulated infection, all the birds had essentially the same temperature during a fever. Instead of conserving energy to survive the winter, the birds without access to extra food were forced to use more energy in order to raise their body temperature high enough to battle infection. Unexpected Findings on Immune Response “We had expected to find that the birds that had access to birdfeeders would have more energy to fight an infection, and that as a result they would exhibit a stronger fever response. Our results, however, show the opposite – birds that did not have access to a reliable source of food had the strongest reaction to infection. This enabled them to reach the same fever temperature as the birds with extra food,” says Hannah Watson. Climate change and human activity are having an ever-increasing impact on animals. Wild animals come into contact with new pathogens that they have never encountered before. Bird feeding, then, can have positive and negative effects. Birds that visit feeding tables are exposed to more infection because of the spread of pathogens, but this could make their immune defenses more tolerant to a new infection. It is therefore important, the researchers argue, to understand the factors that affect animals’ capacity to put up an effective immune response – access to food during winter being one such example. “A lot of people like to feed the birds. Our study shows that this can have a positive effect on the capacity of our small birds to fight an infection,” concludes Hannah Watson. Scientists in India discovered a new lizard species, Cnemaspis vangoghi, in the Southern Western Ghats, named for its resemblance to Van Gogh’s The Starry Night. The finding highlights the rich biodiversity and unique habitat characteristics of Tamil Nadu’s Srivilliputhur area. Credit: Akshay Khandekar You’ve probably seen nature depicted in art, but how often do you see an artwork hiding in nature? When they saw the back of a lizard in the Southern Western Ghats, a group of scientists from the Thackeray Wildlife Foundation in India were reminded of Van Gogh’s The Starry Night. As soon as they figured out it was a new species, it was only apt to name it in honor of the famous painter. “Cnemaspis vangoghi is named for Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh (1853–1890) as the striking coloration of the new species is reminiscent of one of his most iconic paintings, The Starry Night,” explains Ishan Agarwal, who took part in the study to describe the new lizard. Males of the species have a yellow head and forebody and light blue spots on the back and they live among rocks and occasionally buildings and trees. Expedition Findings and Biodiversity Together with his fellow researchers Akshay Khandekar and Tejas Thackeray, they found the new species during an expedition in April 2022 to the Southern Western Ghats in Tamil Nadu, India. Now, they have published their findings in the peer-reviewed journal ZooKeys. “Tamil Nadu is an exceptionally biodiverse state and we expect to name well over 50 new species of lizards by the time we are done [with our expeditions]!” Ishan Agarwal says. “I also had more than 500 tick bites during that summer trip, with the highest densities in the low-elevation, dry forests of Srivilliputhur, where the new species are found,” he adds. Cnemaspis vangoghi is a small-sized gecko that can reach 3,4 cm in length. It was described as new to science together with another species of its genus, Cnemaspis sathuragiriensis, named for its type locality the Sathuragiri Hills. “The two new species are distributed in low elevation (250–400 m asl.), deciduous forests of Srivilliputhur, and add to the five previously known endemic vertebrates from Srivilliputhur-Megamalai Tiger Reserve, Tamil Nadu, India,” Ishan Agarwal explains. They are diurnal and mainly active during the cool hours of the early morning and evening, found largely on rocks. So far, they have only been found in very restricted localities, “an interesting case of micro-endemism in low-elevation species,” he notes.
