夏季是桃子上市之時.市場所賣的桃子,依果肉顏色分為黃白二種,故隨口稱之為黃桃、白桃.初來美時,友人告以白桃香甜多汁,故價格較昂.到市場一看,多為黃桃,白桃較罕見,可遇而不可求.偶爾見之,其價格為黃桃兩倍,還真買不下手.
以往對桃子所知不多,以為桃子僅只如此,如今才知大謬不然.桃子種類繁多,一般人將之分為黃桃白桃.然而種桃樹者卻不是這麼分.他們將桃子分為 freestone 與 cling (clingstone).所謂 freestone,即果肉與桃核容易分開,cling則果肉附於果核上.
除此之外,桃子的種類繁多,然外貌類似,比蘋果難辨多矣.
下表是桃子種類及成熟日期.日期以南卡氣候為準.當然,這日期不可能那麼準,一天不差.
