指比丘、比丘尼應受持的戒法，因與沙彌、沙彌尼所受十戒相比，戒品具足圓滿之戒，由於受此戒，身具無量戒德，故稱具足戒。如比丘的二百五十戒，及比丘尼的三百四十八戒。

The number of years a monk has been ordained. 臘 is the name of an offering made at the end of the year in ancient times.

戒臘又作法臘、夏臘、坐臘。指僧侶受具足戒以後之年數。據釋氏要覽卷下載，比丘以夏安居之最後一日（七月十五日）為受臘日，自此而有法歲，十六日則為新歲歲首。僧侶之長幼順序即依戒臘之多寡而定；受戒年數未久者，則稱淺臘。比丘之坐次，依戒臘(受戒的年數)之多少而定。

比丘之年歲也。比丘每歲為九旬之安居，由其安居之數，以算法齡，稱曰法幾歲，故安居中與安居竟之日，猶如世俗之舊臘與歲首。此所以用夏臘之字也。以此夏臘之多少而定僧中之長幼。
