.The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC;[] also known domestically as Sepah[b] or Pasdaran[c] and internationally as Iranian Revolutionary Guards)[] is a multi-service primary force of the Iranian Armed Forces. It consists of five service branches: Ground Forces, Aerospace Force, Navy, Quds Force, and Basij. It is led by a commander-in-chief, who is appointed by and reports to the Supreme Leader of Iran.
The IRGC was officially established by Ruhollah Khomeini as a military branch in May 1979 in the aftermath of the Iranian Revolution. Whereas the Iranian Army protects the countrys sovereignty in a traditional capacity, the IRGCs constitutional mandate is to ensure the integrity of the Islamic Republic.] Most interpretations of this mandate assert that it entrusts the IRGC with preventing foreign interference in Iran, thwarting coups by the traditional military, and crushing "deviant movements" that harm the ideological legacy of the Islamic Revolution.]
As of 2024, the IRGC had approximately 125,000 total personnel. The main body is the IRGC Ground Forces, which focus on mantaining internal order but recently have also moved towards expeditionary warfare, projecting power of the Islamic Republic.[ The IRGC Navy is now Irans primary force exercising operational control over the Persian Gulf,[erving as a de facto coast guard.
The IRGC Aerospace Force is responsible for the Iranian ballistic missile program and act as the countrys space force.[] The Basij, a paramilitary volunteer militia that serves as the IRGCs auxiliaries, has a further approximately 90,000 active personnel. Finally, the Quds Force serves as unit specialized in unconventional warfare and military intelligence operations, responsible for arming, training, advising and, in some cases, commanding pro-Iranian non-state actors abroad—such as the Hezbollah and the Houthis It operates a media arm, known as "Sepah News" within Iran] Currently, the IRGC is designated as a terrorist organization by Australia, Bahrain, Canada, Ecuador, the European Union, Israel, Paraguay, Saudi Arabia, Sweden, Ukraine, and the United States, while its Quds Force is additionally proscribed by Argentina.]
From 2019 to 2025, Hossein Salami served as the IRGCs commander-in-chief.[ He was killed along with numerous senior officers during the wave of Israeli strikes launched on 13 June 2025.[.
