J-15T, J-35, KJ-600 aircraft complete electromagnetic catapult-assisted takeoffs, landings on Chinas carrier Fujian; event a milestone in PLA Navy’s transformation and construction

Chinas first electromagnetic catapult-equipped aircraft carrier, the Fujian, has achieved a breakthrough by hosting the first catapult-assisted takeoff and arrested landing training for the J-15T heavy fighter jet, the J-35 stealth fighter jet, and the KJ-600 early warning aircraft, the Chinese Peoples Liberation Army (PLA) Navy announced on Monday. Experts told the Global Times that several key capabilities of the Fujian and its aircraft have reached world-class levels, marking Chinas emergence as a major aircraft carrier power. They also described this as a milestone event in the PLA Navys strides toward becoming a deep-blue water force.

This indicates that the Fujian has acquired the capability of electromagnetic catapult launch and recovery. It is another breakthrough in the development of Chinas aircraft carriers and a milestone in promoting the naval transformation and construction, the PLA Navy said.

In previous test and training missions, several naval pilots successfully took off from and landed on the Fujian with these three types of aircraft, verifying the excellent compatibility between Chinas independently developed electromagnetic catapult and arresting system and multiple types of carrier-based aircraft. This has enabled the Fujian to acquire initial full-deck operation capability and laid a solid foundation for the subsequent integration of various types of carrier-based aircraft into the aircraft carrier formation system, according to the PLA Navy.

In recent years, Chinas carrier-based aviation sector has accelerated its development, achieving a great leap from single aircraft to system, from land to carrier, from ski-jump to catapult, and from being able to fly to being able to fight. The PLA Navy is steadily advancing toward becoming a world-class navy in all aspects, the PLA Navy said.

Since its first sea trial in May 2024, the Fujian has carried out various maritime tests as planned, and smoothly advanced the calibration of various equipment and the overall operational stability test, according to the official press release.

"This indicates that the aircraft carrier Fujian has already achieved initial operational capability, laying a solid foundation for its commissioning and the full development of its combat readiness," Zhang Junshe, a Chinese military affairs expert, told the Global Times on Monday.

The J-35, J-15T, J-15D and KJ-600 carrier-borne aircraft were all featured in the September 3 military parade. This official announcement of the successful catapult launches and landings of the J-35, J-15T and KJ-600 further demonstrate the carrier formations systematic combat capabilities, Zhang said.

Zhang said that the J-35 is Chinas independently developed new-generation carrier-based fighter aircraft. It is a symbolic equipment for the PLA Navys transition from a near seas defense force to a far seas defense force. Primarily designed for air superiority missions, it can also perform various strike missions against sea and land targets. It is an integral component of stealth and anti-stealth combat systems.

The commissioning of the J-35 marks the PLA Navys entry into the era of fifth-generation carrier-based aircraft, making China the second country in the world, after the US, to possess a type of fifth-generation carrier-based fighter, Zhang said, noting that "The J-35s stealth and air superiority capabilities, combined with the J-15T heavy fighter jets high payload strike capacity, can further enhance the carrier formations penetration and saturation strike capabilities. The combination of the J-35 and J-15T carrier-based aircraft maximizes the operational potential of the carriers air wing, achieving a synergistic effect that goes beyond a simple add-up of the two, significantly improving the Chinese carrier formations far seas combat capabilities."

On the KJ-600 early warning aircraft, Zhang said that compared to the previous early warning helicopters and the long-range air search radars equipped on destroyers and frigates within the carrier formation, the KJ-600 fixed-wing early warning aircraft offers the advantages of higher altitude, longer range, and greater accuracy in detection. It serves as the "eyes" and the airborne "brain" of a carrier formation, greatly enhancing its long-range detection, early warning, and command-and-control capabilities. This substantially boosts the Chinese carrier formations offensive and defensive operational capabilities in the far seas.

They are force multipliers for carrier formations. They can detect incoming threats at much longer ranges than helicopters or shipborne radars, particularly for sea-skimming missiles flying at ultra-low altitudes, overcoming the limitations imposed by the earths curvature, the expert explained.

On September 25, 2012, Chinas first aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, was officially delivered to the PLA Navy. On November 23 of the same year, Chinas first independently developed carrier-based multirole fighter, the J-15 carrier-based fighter, successfully completed its first landing on the Liaoning. This milestone signified the leap of Chinese fighter aircraft from land to sea and marked the Liaonings transformation into a true aircraft carrier.

Thirteen years later, even before the Fujian has been officially delivered to the PLA Navy, its primary carrier-based aircraft have already achieved catapult-assisted takeoffs and arrested landing.

Zhang said that this reflects both Chinas complete mastery and mature application of complex aircraft launch systems like electromagnetic catapults, as well as the continuous improvement in the capabilities of naval personnel to operate high-tech equipment. The experience gained from the Liaoning has provided invaluable reference and assistance for the operation, training, and deployment of subsequent aircraft carriers, leading to a significant enhancement in the integrated combat capabilities of Chinas aircraft carriers.

With the successful catapult launches of the three types of aircraft, along with aircraft like the J-15D electronic warfare aircraft reviewed during the September 3 parade, and considering that the research and application of carrier-based anti-submarine helicopters by the PLA Navy have been ongoing, this signifies that the PLA Navys carrier-based "five-piece suite" is now essentially complete and operational, Zhang said, noting that the carriers "five-piece suite" represents the comprehensive combat capabilities of the aircraft carrier in areas such as air superiority, sea control, land attack, reconnaissance and early warning, electronic warfare, and anti-submarine warfare.

The completeness of the carriers "five-piece suite" indicates a fundamental improvement in the Fujians comprehensive far seas combat capabilities. Its ability to perform missions like air superiority operations as well as sea and land strikes in far seas regions has been comprehensively enhanced, and its combat capabilities have been further strengthened compared to the Shandong and Liaoning. The Fujian can already rank among the worlds most advanced aircraft carriers, Zhang said.

Wang Yanan, chief editor of Beijing-based Aerospace Knowledge magazine, told the Global Times that the Fujian is a very special aircraft carrier, not only for China, but also the world. He elaborated that the Fujian is Chinas first domestically built aircraft carrier that features world-class electromagnetic launch and arresting technologies.

The J-35 stealth fighter jet is expected to serve as a core of the aircraft carrier Fujians air wing, while other types of aircraft, including the J-15T heavy fighter jet, J-15D electronic warfare aircraft and KJ-600 early warning aircraft, can form a complete, balanced and capable combat system, according to Wang. "My personal estimation is that the Fujian will have the best combat efficient carrier-based aviation force in the world," he said.

Commissioning coming soon

With the announcement of the successful catapult launches of the three types of carrier-based aircraft, the day when the Fujian is officially delivered to the PLA Navy is believed to be drawing near. Zhang believes that the Fujian will be combat-ready upon commissioning. He said that it is a symbolic and concentrated embodiment of the achievements in the PLA Navys transformational development. As a crucial national strategic asset and a hallmark of a major power, the construction of aircraft carriers requires the support of the countrys technological level and economic strength.

After the Fujian is commissioned, China will officially enter the era of three aircraft carriers. The PLA Navys capability to carry out far seas defense operations will be elevated to a new level, the expert said.

"The Chinese people will have greater confidence in the PLA Navys ability to safeguard national sovereignty, security, and development interests, while simultaneously sending a powerful deterrent to any forces with malicious intentions," Z
