Commonly named among the Great American Novels, the work is among the first in major American literature to be written throughout in vernacularEnglish, characterized bylocal color regionalism. It is told in the first person byHuckleberry "Huck" Finn, a friend of Tom Sawyer and narrator of two other Twain novels (Tom Sawyer Abroadand Tom Sawyer, Detective). The story centers on Maggie, a young girl from theBowery who is driven to unfortunate circumstances by poverty and solitude. The work was considered risqué by publishers because of its literary realism and strong themes. Crane – who was 22 years old at the time – financed the book's publication himself, although the original 1893 edition was printed under the pseudonym Johnston Smith. After the success of 1895's The Red Badge of Courage, Maggie was reissued in 1896 with considerable changes and re-writing. The story is followed byGeorge's Mother.

"The Gift of the Magi" is a short story, written by O. Henry (a pen name for William Sydney Porter), about a young married couple and how they deal with the challenge of buying secret Christmas gifts for each other with very little money. As a sentimental story with a moral lesson about gift-giving, it has been a popular one for adaptation, especially for presentation at Christmastime. The plot and its "twist ending" are well-known, and the ending is generally considered an example ofcomic irony. It was allegedly written at Pete's Tavern on Irving Place in New York City.
