Hello, everyone.
Welcome to Let’s Talk in English.
My name is Esther.
And my name is Garrett.
Today, you’re joining us for a sports lesson.
And the name of our lesson is “Let’s Play Ping Pong.” Let’s play ping pong!
Friends, this is a great sport.
It’s not one of those sports you play with a team of ten people on a big field.
All you need is a special ping pong table and at least two people, right?
And then you can play this game.
Ping pong is a fun game that many people like to play around the world.
Some people also call it table tennis, right?
There are special competitive tournaments that people can join,
or people play it for fun. Either way, it’s a lot of fun!
Now, let’s go to our reading to learn more about ping pong.
Many people play table tennis.
You can also call it ping pong.
It is a fun game. How do you play?
You need a table tennis table with a net in the middle.
You also need a ping pong ball, some paddles, and a friend.
First, hit the ball with your paddle.
The ball goes over the net.
Then your friend hits it back to you.
Then you hit it again.
The ball can move quickly, so sometimes you miss it.
Thank you, Garrett.
Yes, this is a fun game, and many people can play it.
Now, let’s go to our Find It question.
Our question is:
When can Sam and Julie play ping pong?
Oh, friends, I’m sure that you can find the answer in our lesson today.
Now, let’s go to Sonia for today’s key words.
Do you play table tennis?
Julie
I often hit the ball into the net.
Sam
The ball can move so quickly.
I don’t have a ping pong table.
Sam
We can play a game at lunch.
Do you play table tennis?
Julie: You mean ping pong?
I do sometimes. It’s fun.
I think so too. Let’s play sometime.
Okay. But I’m not very good at it.
I often hit the ball into the net.
That’s okay. I sometimes do that too.
The ball can move so quickly.
It can. Sometimes I can’t hit it at all.
Well, Esther, as we go into our lesson today,
first we need to talk about the fact that this sport has two different names,
talking about the same thing, right?
So people can call this ping pong, or they can also call it table tennis.
It’s the same thing.
And why is it called table tennis?
Well, it’s like the sport tennis, but you play it on a table, right?
You also have a ball and a net. The ball goes over the net.
You hit the ball with paddles in table tennis.
In regular tennis, we call them rackets.
Well, Sam is asking Julie if she plays table tennis.
And Julie says, “You mean ping pong?”
Now, sometimes you might see this word ping pong written as two words, and that’s okay too.
Julie says that she sometimes plays ping pong. It’s fun.
It is fun. Sam agrees, and he wants to play.
He says, “Let’s play sometime.”
Friends, let’s watch today’s Calendar Phrase:

Let’s play sometime.
Let’s play sometime.
I like to play ping pong.
Me too.
Let’s play sometime.
I like to play basketball.
Me too. Let’s play sometime.
And I like to play tennis.
Oh, me too. Let’s play sometime.
Great! Let’s play anytime.
I love to play.
Me too.
Let’s play sometime.
Let’s play sometime.

Thanks for that calendar phrase, guys.
Well, let’s play sometime.
So, when are Sam and Julie going to play?
Well, they have not decided yet. They have not set the time.
This means that they want to play one time in the future.
Sonia, can you help us with this word “sometime”?
Let’s play sometime.
I’d love to meet up with you sometime.
Tyler will move to Texas sometime this year.
Tyler
Sometimes I can’t fall asleep at night.
He rides a bike to school sometimes.
Julie tells Sam, “Okay,”
but she says, “I’m not very good at it. I often hit the ball into the net.”
When you play ping pong, you have to hit the ball over the net.
This is a piece of cloth made of plastic that you use to catch things.
Yeah, or it might be made of string too.
That net is in the middle of the ping pong table.
You need to hit the ball over the net.
If you don’t, the other person gets a point, right?
In many sports like tennis and volleyball, there is also a net,
and you also need to move the ball over the net to get a point, right?
Well, Sam is fine with that.
It’s okay that Julie sometimes hits the ball into the net.
He sometimes does that too.
After all, the ball can move so quickly.
If something is moving, it means it is not staying still.
It’s going from one place to another place. Right.
When you are playing other sports like basketball,
you want to move that ball too, often by shooting it or throwing it towards the net.
Right. And when you play sports,
you also need to move your feet quickly.
You need to be in the right place so you can hit that ball.
So hit the ball over the net in table tennis or ping pong.
Well, Julie agrees that the ball can move very fast,
and sometimes she can’t hit it at all.
This means she doesn’t hit the ball.
She misses. What happens then?
Well, if you don’t hit the ball and you miss,
then the other person will get a point.
Exactly. So you want to hit the ball over the net
and make sure the ball hits the table on the other side.
Otherwise, the other person will get a point.
But you want to get points if you’re going to win, right?
So you want the other person to miss their hits.
Then you will get more points.
Ping pong is a fun sport
because you can watch the ball move from side to side, often very quickly.
All right. Those professionals can hit the ball very hard.
Old friends, it’s time for a quick break—
maybe not long enough for a full ping pong game—
but get ready to play later. We’ll be right back just after this.
I’ll Get English
Welcome back to the show, friends.
Today we’re talking about table tennis.
It’s a much smaller sport than other sports
where you need a big field and lots of players, right?
Table tennis or ping pong is a fun game to watch,
especially in the Summer Olympics, right?
You can also play this game at a lot of different recreational centers
or hotels or different places that offer the equipment for you.
Now, let’s continue our lesson.
You have to play more.
I know, but I don’t have a ping pong table.
I do, and now we have one at the office.
I have my paddle with me today. Do you have more than one?
I do. We can play a game at lunch.
Okay. But I may miss the ball a lot, so don’t get upset.
So Sam starts off this part of the conversation by saying,
“You have to play more.”
Now let’s talk about that phrase “have to.”
When you have to do something, it’s like you need to.
Sometimes this is because there’s a rule,
but that’s not what Sam’s talking about.
Sam is telling Julie that she needs to practice more.
She needs to play ping pong more often.
And Julie agrees. She says, “I know.”
But there is a problem.
She says, “I don’t have a ping pong table.”
If you don’t have a ping pong table,
it might be hard to play ping pong or table tennis.
Now we’ve used that word “table” a lot of times.
Let’s talk about what a table is, Esther.
Sure. A table is something where you can put things down on.
A table often has chairs around it.
You might eat on a table,
or your computer might be on a table during work.
Right. A table is higher off the ground and is very useful.
Well, Sam actually does have a ping pong table,
and he says, “Now we have one at the office.”
Esther, did you know that?
I didn’t! Let’s go ask Sam where it is,
because maybe we can go and play during our break as well.
Right. We should get our work done before we go and play, though.
Well, Sam says he has his paddle with him today.
Remember, a paddle is what you use to hit the ball in ping pong, right?
There’s a place where you can hold it, and the top part is round.
You can use a paddle to hit the ball when you play ping pong.
But there’s something that you need.
You need more than one paddle to play a game of ping pong.
So Julie asks Sam,
“Do you have more than one?”
And that’s an important question.
If you don’t have more than one paddle,
it’ll be hard to play ping pong with someone else.
But it shouldn’t be too hard to answer our Find It question today.
Here it is: When can Sam and Julie play ping pong?
They can play at lunch. Yes, they can play a game at lunch.
Not when they’re eating, but before or probably after they finish their food.
They can play when they take that break.
Exactly. And thankfully, Sam did bring another paddle,
so they can play a game of ping pong at lunch.
Now, that word game can mean a lot of different things.
It can mean that you’re playing a sport,
like a game of soccer or a game of basketball.
What are some other ways that we use that?
Some people also play a board game.
There is a cardboard with little pieces, like Monopoly.
Or maybe you’re playing a game on your phone, like a video game.
Remember, in a game, there are usually rules—things that you need to follow to play the game.
Finally, kids love to play games during a break at school—
games like tag, where you run around on the playground.
Oh, Julie continues. She says,
“I may miss the ball a lot, so don’t get upset.”
Right, and again, if you miss the ball,
it means that the ball is coming towards you,
but you are not able to hit it.
Sonia, can you help us with this word ‘miss’ used this way?
Sam
Julie
But I may miss the ball a lot.
Ed swung the bat but missed the ball.
Hurry or we’ll miss the bus.
Why does she always miss the point?
Thank you, Sonia.
Friends, now it’s time for us to go and review today’s keywords.
Here’s your first keyword for today:
table tennis
Table tennis. Let’s play table tennis.
game
Game. Can we play a game?
table
Table. Put the food on the table.
net
Net. The ball is going into the net.
move
Move. The players move quickly.
Friends, those are your keywords for today.
Keep on practicing them!
And now it’s your turn.
Today’s words are table tennis, game, table, net, and move.
Now it’s your turn to use them in a sentence.
First one:
Chess is a fun...
I agree. Chess is a fun game.
Next:
Dinner is on the...
This is easy. Dinner is on the table.
Next:
Are you good at...
This is a kind of sport. Are you good at table tennis?
Next:
The bus is now...
You’re right. The bus is moving now.
Last one:
Hit the ball across the...
That’s correct. Hit the ball across the net.
Great job, friends! See you again for Your Turn.
Do you play table tennis, Julie?
You mean ping pong? I do sometimes. It’s fun.
I think so too. Let’s play sometime.
Okay. But I’m not very good at it.
I often hit the ball into the net.
That’s okay. I sometimes do that too.
The ball can move so quickly.
It can. Sometimes I can’t hit it at all.
You have to play more.
I know, but I don’t have a ping pong table.
I do. And now we have one at the office.
I have my paddle with me today. Do you have more than one?
I do. We can play a game at lunch.
Okay. But I may miss the ball a lot, so don’t get upset.
One, two, let’s review!
Hey Hazel, do you play table tennis?
Sometimes I do. It’s fun. But I call it ping pong.
Yes. Let’s play sometime.
Okay. But I’m not very good at it.
Sometimes I hit the ball into the net,
and sometimes I can’t hit the ball at all.
Well, the ball moves quickly—especially when I hit it. BAM!
Oh, you must be a good player.
Well, I play a lot. I have a ping pong table at home.
Oh, that’s nice.
And now we have one at the office.
BAM! So that’s nice.
Yes, we can play during lunch.
No, sorry. I don’t have a ping pong paddle.
No problem. I have an extra one.
But what if I miss the ball? Will you be upset?
No. I only get upset if I miss the ball.
Oh!
But that doesn’t happen very often.
Hi, I’m Detective Carter.
I have a problem. I have some items and I need to find one that is different.
Can you help me find the odd one out?
I have four words.
Three are the same.
One is odd. It is different from the other three.
Can you find the odd one?
First we have:
table tennis, game, basketball, and baseball
Which ones always use a ball?
The answer is: game.
Table tennis, basketball, and baseball are all kinds of games.
They all use a ball.
Not all games use balls, so game is different.
Can you help me again?
Game, piano, music, and net
Which of these words cannot use the word “play” before it?
The answer is: net.
You can play a game, play the piano, and play music.
They are the same. You can’t play a net,
so net is the different one.
Good work! You helped me find the odd one out.
See you next time, friends.
Well, today we talked about one popular game—
both at the Olympic Games and for people having fun during their breaks.
Now sometimes we think of games as something just for kids,
but adults can have fun with them too, right?
Playing games is a great way to spend time, get exercise,
and make new friends, right?
What kinds of games do you like to play—maybe during a lunch break?
Do you play the game of pool, where you hit balls with a stick on a special table?
Right. And I think it’s a great idea to have a ping pong table at the office.
I wish every office had a ping pong table.
Right. It’s a good way to have a competitive game.
And of course, we here love board games.
There are many great board games that can help you practice your English—
games where you need to think of words in English, right?
There’s a game called Scrabble,
where you get many different letters,
and you need to come up with English words using the letters you have.
And my favorite is a game called Code Names.
It’s great for learning!
Friends, we’ll be back again tomorrow—
that’s right here on Let’s Talk in English.
Goodbye!

Hello everyone, welcome to Let’s Talk in English.
My name is Garret.
And my name is Esther.
Today, our topic is sports, and our title is Let’s Play Ping Pong.
Friends, did you play ping pong—
or you might call it table tennis—after our lesson yesterday, right?
Do you remember what kind of game it is?
It’s a game where you need a paddle—two paddles, actually—
a table, and you need a ping pong ball.
Remember that the table needs a net in the middle.
When you play, you hit the ping pong ball over the net, right?
And you get a point when the other player misses
or doesn’t hit the ball when it’s on their side,
or if they hit the ball and it doesn’t hit the table on your side.
If you do it right, you can keep going for a long time, back and forth.
And it sure is fun to watch.
When people play ping pong, the ball can move very fast,
and people also move their feet when they play ping pong well.
Yesterday, we found out that there is a ping pong table at our office.
Esther and I had a great time playing. It sure was fun!
Garret is quite good at ping pong.
Oh, I do okay. Sometimes I miss the ball, though.
Well, friends, hopefully you don’t miss today’s Find It answer.
Here’s our question:
How fast does a ping pong ball go for an average player?
How fast does a ping pong ball go for an average player?
Friends, we’ll talk about this question and answer it in today’s lesson.
Now let’s go to Sonia for today’s keywords.
James
That’s because I practice a lot.
I wonder.
James
I looked it up.
For average players like us, the ball moves about 25 miles per hour.
How about for professional players?
Ah, it was fun playing table tennis with you, James.
You’re an excellent player.
So are you, Greg. You beat me once, but you beat me four times.
You’re so fast.
That’s because I practice a lot.
I should play more often.
It’s good exercise.
It is! You move around a lot.
You have to—the ball moves so fast.
How fast does it go?
I wonder.
I wondered that too, so I looked it up.
Alright, looks like Greg and James are having a fun time playing some ping pong.
They sure are, and they played many games.
Greg tells James, “You’re an excellent player.”
If someone tells you you’re an excellent player,
it means that you are quite good at that game, right?
When we use that word player,
we’re talking about someone who plays a game—
no matter if it’s a video game on your phone or a game like ping pong.
All of these are players, right?
You might say, “He is a good basketball player.”
Now James tells Greg, “So are you. You beat me once,” right?
He beat him once—or Greg won one of their games.
Well, Greg says, “You beat me four times,” so James won four times.
Greg won once.
Greg thinks James is so fast, right?
Now let’s go to Sonia for more on this word time.
Greg
But you beat me four times.
She called me five times this morning.
How many times do I have to remind you to call?
Did you have a good time in Egypt?
It took her a long time to walk to the store.
Thank you, Sonia. James tells Greg why he was able to win four times. He says:
That’s because I practice a lot.
That’s because I practice a lot.
When you practice something, you’re not in an official or a real competition.
Like when you play in the Olympic Games—that’s not practice,
but you’ll practice a lot before, right?
When you practice, you do something again and again.
If you are learning music,
if you are learning the piano,
you might need to practice the same song 20, 30, or even 50 times, right?
When you practice, you might just do a part of something, not the whole thing.
Practicing makes you better.
And we heard:
That’s because I practice a lot.
That is today’s calendar phrase:

That’s because I practice a lot.
That’s because I practice a lot.
You’re so good at ping pong.
That’s because I practice a lot.
And you’re so good at basketball.
That’s because I practice a lot.
And you’re so good at tennis.
Oh, that’s because I practice a lot.
But you’re not so good at the piano.
That’s because I never practiced.
That’s because I practice a lot.
That’s because I practice a lot.

Well, Greg should play more often. That way, he could get better.
Andy says it’s good exercise.
It sure is, and I agree. Greg needs to practice more.
He doesn’t get too much practice playing ping pong.
That’s why he’s not as good as James, right?
James says, “You move around a lot.”
He’s saying you move a lot when you play ping pong,
as you’re chasing the ball.
And that’s why it’s pretty good exercise.
Right. Anytime you move your body well, you are exercising.
And Greg agrees. He says, “You have to.”
If you have to do something, you need to do it, right?
The ball moves so fast, and he wonders how fast—
or he’s thinking about it. He’s not sure.
Right. If you wonder about something,
you have a question or you have questions about it,
and you want to know the answer.
Well, there is one way to find out the answer that Greg was wondering about:
You can look it up.
When you look something up,
you use the internet usually,
or maybe read it in a book to try to find the answer.
Right. And try to look that up as we take a break.
Friends, we’ll be right back after this.
Let’s Talk in English, Let’s Talk in English,
Every day, every day!
Welcome back to the show, everyone.
Earlier, we heard the phrase to look something up.
This is usually to look up information.
Sometimes, if you’re doing research for a school project,
you might need to look up a lot of information, right?
And if you don’t know something and you want to find out what the answer is,
then you can look it up.
Well, let’s get back to our conversation now.
So tell me, how fast does a ping pong ball go?
For average players like us, the ball moves about 25 miles per hour.
That doesn’t sound very fast—
but it’s fast when you play!
How about for professional players?
The fastest hit was about 70 miles per hour!
Wow, that is really fast!
So can we play again next week?
Sure! Maybe you can beat me a few more times.
I plan on it!
Alright, remember we wanted to look up
how fast a ping pong ball goes.
Because if you start playing hard,
that ball will start moving quite quickly, right?
And Greg wants James to know,
because James said that he would look it up, right?
And friends, this gets us to our Find It question.
Hopefully you found the answer. Here it is again:
How fast does a ping pong ball go for an average player?
The answer is:
It goes 25 miles per hour.
Wow, that is very fast!
It is! I certainly can’t run that fast.
I don’t think so, at least.
Well, we heard this is for an average player.
Esther, what are we talking about here?
Here, the word average means for a normal or regular player.
You’re not someone who plays ping pong or table tennis for your job.
You’re just an average player—
you’re just someone who plays it for fun.
Yeah, that word average can get into some math.
So, there are players that hit the ball much slower,
and players who hit it much faster.
The average player is right in the middle, right?
And for them, the ball moves about 25 miles per hour.
This means in one hour,
how fast the ball moves is about 25 miles, right?
Let’s go over to Sonia for more on that word per.
Greg
For average players like us, the ball moves about 25 miles per hour.
The cars are going at 65 miles per hour.
The total bill is 75 dollars, so that’s 25 dollars per person.
Irene earns 4,000 dollars per month.
Irene
Well, thank you so much, Sonia.
Greg doesn’t think 25 miles per hour sounds fast.
That might be because he’s thinking of car speeds.
It’s much slower than that.
But it feels fast when you play ping pong, right?
Because the ball is moving back and forth—it’s moving fast on the table and across the net.
Now Greg asked James:
How about for professional players?
He wants to know about their speed for the ball, right?
Professional players are players who do this as a job.
And we heard the fastest hit was about 70 miles per hour.
That’s much faster!
Oh, Greg is interested, and he wants to play again, right?
He wants to play once more, and he wants to play next week—not this week, right?
James is happy too. He says:
Maybe you can beat me a few more times.
Because Greg only beat him once.
So Greg says:
I plan on it.
I hope Greg will practice this week.
Maybe he can practice with us, right?
Maybe we can help train him so he can beat James next time.
Old friends, it’s time now

Yeah, let’s talk about playing ping pong.
What about playing ping pong?
I win!
I know—you beat me every time!
You’re an excellent player, David.
That’s because I practice a lot.
I’m so fast—Bam!
I should play ping pong more often. It’s good exercise.
I move around a lot when I play.
Yeah, you have to move quickly,
because when I hit the ball—Pam!—
it moves so fast.
That’s for sure.
I wonder how fast a ping pong ball goes.
I know you do!
Yes, I looked it up.
So, what did you find out?
Well, when an average player hits the ball,
it moves about 25 miles per hour.
Wow, that’s pretty fast, right?
Well, no—that’s not fast at all.
When a professional hits the ball, it’s really, really fast.
How fast?
Up to 70 miles per hour.
70 miles per hour?! Wow! That is super fast.
Yeah! Were you paying attention today, friends?
Let’s answer questions to find out.
Here’s the first one:
How many times did Greg beat James?
You can find the answer in Conversation A.
Greg beat James once.
Here’s our next question:
What do you wonder about?
Let’s go to our friends and hear their answers.
What do I wonder about?
Sometimes I wonder about friends that I had in high school.
I wonder what they’re doing now.
Do they still live in my neighborhood?
Did they move away?
I wonder if they wonder about me.
What do I wonder about?
Hmm… well, I wonder what I’m going to have for dinner today.
And I also wonder what advice I would give myself from the future. Ha!
Do you ever wonder what is in the future?
I do. I wonder.
What do I wonder about?
Well, sometimes I wonder too much about what people think of me.
I wonder what they’re thinking,
and if they’re judging me,
and if they like me.
Maybe that’s not something I should wonder too much about.
What do I wonder about?
Oh, that is a hard question.
I wonder about many different things.
I wonder about the weather.
Will it be a warm or cold day?
I wonder about big questions about life.
I wonder about the future.
I wonder what my children will be when they get older.
I wonder, I wonder…
Okay, there is so much to wonder about.
What do I wonder about?
I wonder about many things. For example:
How are people so different from each other?
Why are even brothers and sisters so different?
They grew up in the same family—
so why do they look different,
act in a different way,
and like different things?
Thanks for those answers, friends!
And friends at home,
if you ever wonder about something—
you want to know some information—
remember: try looking it up in English!
Right, that way you’ll learn new words.
If you’ve looked it up on YouTube,
you can watch people talk about it,
and you will hear those words as well.
And friends, we’ll see you again tomorrow
right here on Let’s Talk in English.
Goodbye!
