Hello, friends.
My name is Anne Marie,
and today is a great day to learn something new.
So let’s do that together. I’m David,
and this is Studio Classroom.
We have a great lesson for you today, friends.
But first, we are asking a question. Are you ready?
I’m ready. What is your favorite way to exercise?
Well, when I need to exercise, usually
I need to do it quickly
because I don’t have that much time in the day.
So sometimes I’ll just
walk up all the stairs in my apartment building,
and then
I’ll do some jumping jacks, and some push-ups, and some other
simple exercises—maybe some
squats. I think we talk about those later on in the article—
just to get my body moving. Mmm.
So you sound like you
like to exercise in a very efficient, productive kind of way.
That’s right. It has to be, or else
I wouldn’t have time for it. Well,
we have a very special kind of exercising to talk about in our
lesson today.
It’s called
T R X. Let’s get started with our first reading right now.
TRX
Get fit in a brand-new way!
Imagine walking into an exercise studio
at the invitation of a friend.
Upon entering,
you expect to see a room full of cardiovascular
and weight training stations.
But instead, you see people holding onto black straps
that hang from the ceiling
and doing all sorts of exercises.
Is this some kind of circus training?
No, this is TRX—
an exercise system
that challenges your strength and balance
in ways that typical exercise machines can’t.
Rarely does one find an exercise system
as simple and complete as TRX.

TRX
Hi, I’m Jack.
Hi, I’m Jack.
今天的 Usage Tip 是:upon + 動名詞或名詞語境解析詞:「upon」跟「as soon as」的意思是相同的,用來說明一件事情發生後,另一件事情隨即發生。
由於是介系詞,upon 後面必須接動名詞或是名詞來當它的受詞。
接動名詞的時候,該動詞的執行者必須是主要子句的主詞,否則呢,將會構成文法上的錯誤哦。
譬如文章中這一句:「Upon entering, you expect to see a room」
upon 後面的 entering 的執行者就是 you。
來看個例句:
Upon the completion of the course, students will receive a certificate of chievement.
學生完成課程之後將獲得成績證書。
Friends, are you ready to get fit in a brand new way?
Let’s find out all about TRX,
and let’s define some of these words as well.
What does it mean to "get fit"? Well,
it means to get in shape or to make your body stronger.
That’s right.
Many people have a plan to get fit in the new year—
it’s one of the most common
New Year plans that people make.
That’s right—it is a very common New Year’s resolution.
We also see this phrase: “a brand new way.”
What does it mean if something is brand new?
It means it’s completely untouched.
It is new. It is unused. It’s totally new.
Here’s an example:
There’s a brand new restaurant on the corner.
This probably means that the restaurant just opened.
Now, how does our lesson continue?
It begins with an image for your imagination:
Imagine walking into an exercise studio at the invitation of a friend.
Okay, and we see here “to walk into” a place.
Now, if you walk into something,
it kind of means something else as well.
You could physically be walking into a place,
but you could also
be becoming involved in a situation that you
weren’t expecting as well.
That’s right. Or maybe you could even say that after
graduating high school,
you’re walking into a brand new chapter in your life.
That’s right.
Now, this next sentence, friends, was our usage tip for today:
Upon entering, you expect to see a room full of cardiovascular and weight training stations.
That is a very, very long word—cardiovascular.
What does cardiovascular mean?
Cardiovascular just means related to your
heart or your blood vessels 血管.
Okay.
So, for example,
someone might have a cardiovascular disease
and need to take medication for it
every day.
That’s right.
But instead of seeing
exercise and weight training stations, you see
people holding onto black straps that hang from the ceiling,
doing all sorts of exercises.
Oh, it sounds like acrobatics to me—very interesting.
Now we see this word "straps" here.
Friends,
we’re talking about a strip of cloth or a strip of leather
or some other type of flexible material.
And usually,
a strap is used to fasten, secure, or carry something.
Yes, for example,
maybe you can tighten the straps on your backpack
so that it’s easier to carry.
That’s right.
But these straps are a little different—these straps are
hanging from the ceiling.
That’s right.
And we see from the
picture in our article that it looks like some kind of
circus training.
But it’s not—it’s TRX, an exercise system that
challenges your strength and balance
in ways that typical exercise machines
can’t.
Okay, exercise machines—have you ever used an exercise machine
before, friends?
How do we define that?
An exercise machine is just a machine that is used
for physical exercise.
For example,
treadmills—
those machines that you use to run or walk in place, or
stationary bikes,
which are just those machines that you pedal like a bicycle,
but they don’t go anywhere.
These are two types of exercise machines.
A lot of times, people will get a membership to a gym
because they don’t have exercise machines in their home.
But you won’t find exercise
machines when you are going to a TRX gym
or a TRX class.
No, rarely does one find an exercise system as simple
and complete as TRX.
That’s right—simple and complete, without even needing
the exercise machines
or the typical equipment that you would find in a gym.
You know, I actually—
my finger was cut
off by an exercise machine. It was a stationary bike.
Oh my goodness.
Yeah, when I was very, very young—
one year old—my brother was riding a stationary bike,
and the fan inside was spinning,
and then I put my finger into it because I thought,
“Hey, I wonder what will happen?”
Shoop!
But it’s okay now.
So you have to be really careful around exercise machines.
That’s right. I think they make them much safer
now than they did back in the eighties.
I think you might be right.
Alright, friends,
so we have more to learn about TRX in just a moment.
Let’s get into our next reading right now.
TRX
TRX, which stands for Total Body Resistance Exercise,
is a unique mode of suspension training

is the suspension trainer—
a set of sturdy straps with handles and foot cradles.

我們先來看 mode 這個名詞,它的意思是「方式」或是「模式」。
我們先來看 mode 這個名詞,它的意思是「方式」或是「模式」。
例如:
What’s your favorite mode of transportation: driving or flying?
你最喜歡的交通方式是開車還是搭飛機?
或是:
I use focus mode on my phone while working to keep from getting distracted.
工作的時候,我會把手機調到「專注模式」,以免分心。
又或者:
Mom shifts into Christmas mode right after Thanksgiving and starts baking.
感恩節剛過,媽媽立刻進入「聖誕節模式」,開始烘焙甜點。
Okay, friends,
let’s learn some more about TRX.
We read here:
TRX, which stands for Total Body Resistance Exercise, is a unique mode of suspension training that engages the entire body.
There’s a lot to learn in this sentence, friends, so let’s break it down.
So first,
we see the exact definition of TRX, right?
That’s right—
it is Total Body Resistance Exercise.
So, resistance is when there’s some kind of force
pushing in or pulling out,
and then you’re moving in the opposite direction—
you’re resisting it.
Okay.
I think we are going to learn a little bit more
about resistance here in our article, friends, so please
remember that term.
Right now, the term we want to look at is this word suspension.
Now, if you’re going to suspend from somewhere,
or if something is suspended,
it just means that it is hanging up from above.
That’s right.
It can also mean that something
was originally going to happen at a certain time
but had to be changed.
For example:
The suspension of the baseball game made the fans very angry.
I like this use of the word suspend
because it has the idea that something was going to happen,
but now it’s just hanging there—
we don’t know when it’s going to happen.
Now, how does our article continue?
We see that the main component of the TRX system
is the suspension trainer,
which is a special product—
a set of sturdy straps with handles and foot cradles.
Okay, there are a couple of things we need to talk about here, friends.
We have this word component—how can we define that?
A component is a part or element of a larger system.
Okay, so here’s an example:
Friends, conversation practice is an
important component of language learning.
In order to learn a new language,
there are a lot of different things you need to do.
One of those components is
conversation practice.
That’s right.
The other word we have here is
foot cradle.
Now, we all know
a cradle is something that you put a baby in, right?
That’s right. But a cradle can be something else as well—
it can be a type of support
to protect something or to hold it.
Exactly. For example,
stationary bikes have foot cradles on the pedals
so that they’re easier to use.
That’s right.
So this TRX system has a foot cradle.
I haven’t seen this system before,
but I get the idea that there are
certain places where you put your hands and your feet.
That’s right. I have done this before, actually,
and it is a good workout. Usually, it’s only
two straps that you use for either your hands or your feet.
So these straps have a place where you can hold with your
hands, and then they have another area
on the same strap where, if you’re doing it with your feet,
you can slide your foot into that foot cradle.
Very interesting.
We have a few more words we want to look at here, friends.
We read: This equipment is designed to utilize body weight as the primary form of resistance.
What does that word utilize mean?
That’s a very useful word,
and it just means to make
practical use of something. For example,
you could utilize your skills when you get a new job—
you are making
practical use of the things you learned before.
Now, we started to talk about this word resistance here,
and this is the idea that you are pushing against something
with weight or force,
or that when you push against something,
you get pushback from it.
That’s right. For example,
you can adjust the resistance of a rowing machine—
another kind of exercise machine—
based on how difficult you want it to be.
That’s right.
Okay, friends, we have more to learn in just a moment,
so we’ll be right back after today’s Info Cloud.
Hello friends,
Welcome to Info Cloud.
Rex, I saw that boxing documentary you recommended,
and it reminded me of an interesting phrase:
to be on the ropes.
Hey Garrett, that’s a great expression.
It comes straight from
boxing, doesn’t it?
It does.
In boxing, when a fighter is on the ropes,
they’re backed into the ropes around the outside of the boxing ring.
That’s a very vulnerable position.
So being on the ropes usually
means they’re struggling or close to being defeated.
Exactly. And over time, the phrase started
being used outside of boxing
to describe any situation
where someone is in trouble or barely hanging on.
For example,
if a business is losing money and close to shutting down,
you might say that company is on the ropes.
Or if a team is losing badly in a game,
they could be described as on the ropes.
It’s important to remember that sometimes
being on the ropes is a turning point.
Exactly. So whether you’re facing a tough project at work
or a personal challenge,
being on the ropes doesn’t mean you’re done.
It just means it’s time to dig deep and fight back.
on the ropes 陷入困境或危機變轉機
on the ropes 陷入困境或危機變轉機
在拳擊比賽中,我們經常看到選手被逼到角落,好像快輸了。
你可以用 on the ropes(在繩子上) 來形容這個狀態。
在日常生活中,on the ropes 也可以表示「陷入困境」的意思。
如果有人說:That company is on the ropes,那就表示那家公司可能虧損嚴重,快要倒閉了。
不過,on the ropes 並不代表沒有希望翻盤,有時候 on the ropes 還可能是一個轉折點,
或許危機會變成轉機,最後帶來勝利。
這就是今天的 Info Cloud,我們下次雲端見!

接下來看的是 attach 這個動詞,意思是「綁上」或是「附著」。
比如:Attach the safety line securely before stepping off the ledge.
在踏出邊緣之前,請繫好安全繩。
或是:My parents joked that my brother and I were attached at the hip because we were inseparable.

Attach 的名詞是 attachment,意思是依附關係。
例句:
People who are overly independent and cannot trust others may have experienced insecure attachment with their parents as babies.
過度獨立且無法信任別人的人,可能在嬰兒時期與父母有不安全的依附關係。
Okay friends,
let’s learn more about how to actually do TRX exercises.
We read:
When performing TRX exercises, the user’s body is suspended above the ground.
Now, we saw that word suspension before,
and this is just the idea that something is hanging.
That’s right. Going back to the circus idea from before,
you could say that the performer was suspended
above the crowd, hanging from a rope.
I don’t know how I feel about
TRX exercises if I have to be suspended in the air.
Usually, at least part of you is on the ground,
so none of the exercises I did when I was doing TRX
actually required me to be totally suspended in the air.
Okay, maybe this is something that I could try after all.
But we see here that gravity and body weight work together,
and this is what creates the resistance.
That’s right.
And by simply adjusting
the body’s position
relative to where the straps are attached,
the difficulty of each exercise
can be increased or decreased.
Okay, we have some words here that we want to look at, friends.
The first is this word adjusting.
What does it mean to adjust something?
To adjust something is just to
change or modify the position of something.
It can be a physical thing,
or it could also be something not physical—
like adjusting yourself to fit into a new situation.
That’s right. So for example,
you could adjust your attitude if you have a bad attitude.
You could adjust it
so that it’s a good attitude.
You could also adjust the air conditioning if the room is
too hot—
in order to cool the room down,
you need to adjust the air-con.
All right.
We also see this phrase: to be relative to something.
Now, when something is relative to something else,
you’re comparing the two things together,
and you have to consider them both in this situation.
That’s right. For example,
maybe the teacher
changes her scoring system
relative to how much her students are able to understand
the material.
Okay, so let me understand TRX better here, Dave—
you can adjust your body’s position,
and that will make some of these
exercises more easy or more difficult?
Yes. It’s sort of like when you do push-ups—
if you have your hands very wide,
then certain muscles are working very hard.
Versus if your hands are in the middle,
you adjust your body’s position, and it changes
how difficult it is to do a push-up.
I see. So do you need to adjust the straps at all, or only
your body’s position?
You kind of adjust both,
but your body’s position relative to
where the straps are connected on the ceiling
is what really makes the difference.
I see. Well,
we’re not done learning about this, friends, but right now
let’s go to today’s Fun Fact.
Hello Fact Friends,
I am Detective Ernest Finder, and I have a fun fact for you today.
Did you know there are many unique workout methods?
The internet has made some more popular.
Some workout methods include:
using a chair to work out
working out without moving
working out by walking like an animal
and working out by laughing
I don’t know if I like that one,
but that is today’s Fun Fact.
Okay friends,
as we end our lesson today,
let’s take a few minutes to review what exactly TRX is.
Dave, can you help us out?
TRX, which stands for Total Resistance Exercise,
is a form of exercise where, instead of using
exercise equipment like treadmills or stationary bikes,
you instead use a combination of your body weight
and gravity,
with these special straps that allow you to be suspended
above the ground while doing certain exercises.
This sounds like a very interesting system to me
because you can adjust the resistance
of the exercises depending on how you position your body
or the straps.
That’s right.
That’s one of the things that makes it so useful for
such a variety of people.
If you need a little bit more strength,
if you want to work a little bit harder,
maybe you’re more advanced—
then you can use certain positions.
Whereas if you’re just starting out,
then you can do easier versions of the exercises.
I’m excited to learn more
about TRX tomorrow.
But friends, that’s all the time we have for today.
My name is Anne Marie.
And I’m David, and we’ll see you next time

Hello friends,
My name is Amari,
and today is a great day to learn something new.
So let’s do that together. I’m David,
and this is Studio Classroom.
We are on day two of our article called TRX.
Dave, can you explain to us what in the world TRX is?
Sure. TRX is a form of exercise.
TRX stands for Total Resistance Exercise,
and it’s an exercise system that uses
body weight and gravity to
exercise and work out the body.
That’s right. And TRX uses a lot of resistance.
There are straps that you put your hands and your feet into,
and when you adjust your body positions,
this can adjust the difficulty of the exercises.
We’re going to learn more about TRX in our lesson today,
so let’s get right into it.
TRX
TRX training revolves around seven movement patterns,
which include pushing,
pulling, planks, and lunges.
These dynamic movements are similar to natural motions,
creating a workout that targets
all major muscle groups and especially benefits the core.
Core muscles support almost every movement,
from sitting to lifting heavy objects,
and prevent injuries by protecting one’s back
and improving overall body control.
Welcome to Language Lab, I’m Jack.
首先來看 workout 這個名詞,意思是健身或是鍛鍊。
來看例句:
Although the idea of a workout was initially unappealing, he went to the gym regularly after discovering how much he enjoyed it.
雖然他一開始對健身的想法不感興趣,但後來發現很喜歡,就固定去健身房了。
或者是:
My dad plays Sudoku every day to give his brain a mental workout.
我爸爸每天都玩數獨,讓自己的大腦鍛鍊一下。
或是:
Her workout clothes usually included leggings, a loose T-shirt, and running shoes.
她的運動服通常包括緊身褲、寬鬆T恤和跑步鞋。
Alright, thank you so much, Jack. Friends,
let’s continue to learn more about TRX.
We read here in our article:
“TRX training revolves around seven movement patterns.”
Let’s stop there for a minute and talk
about what it means if something revolves around something else.
If something revolves around something,
it means that it is the main focus of something. For example,
you could say: “His life revolves around his girlfriend.”
This means that everything that he does
and all the choices that he makes
all have to do with his girlfriend.
Now, our lesson continues here by saying:
“These movement patterns include pushing, pulling, planks, and lunges.”
Now when we’re talking about planks,
we’re talking about a specific kind of exercise.
This is going to strengthen your abdominal muscles.
You hold a press-up position for a period of time.
That’s right. For example,
you could say that you did a
three-minute plank challenge that you saw on TikTok.
I am not interested at all in doing
three-minute plank challenges.
Me neither. Really hard!
Well, what about lunges though? Do you like doing lunges?
These are exercises where you step one foot out
in front and your back leg stays straight. And yes,
lunges are a really great way to
work out the muscles in the back of your leg.
Maybe you have a friend, Nancy,
who can do 30 lunges at a time without stopping.
That’s a lot of lunges!
Well, these dynamics, such as planks and lunges,
are similar to natural motions,
creating a workout that targets all major muscle groups
and especially benefits the core.
Now we saw that word workout in your Language Lab
already today, friends.
And now the word we want to look at is this word: core.
Yeah, so the core of something is the central,
most important part of it.
Here, we’re talking about the core of your body.
These core muscles are actually used for almost
all the movements that you do on a daily basis.
Sometimes, you might hear the core muscles of your body
referred to as your abs or your abdominal muscles.
Now, sit-ups are a type of exercise that really
work out your core—or really
work out your abs.
And it seems like TRX is really good for this too.
Certainly is. We see here that
core muscles support almost every movement,
from sitting to lifting heavy objects,
and prevent injuries by protecting one’s back
and improving overall body control.
Well, you’ve done TRX before, right Dave?
Can you kind of explain how this might work?
Sure. A lot of the movements that you do using the straps
are, like they say, natural motions—things like, you know,
pulling up or pushing down,
or just lifting the leg in certain ways.
And boy—let me tell you, after a few of those, you can really feel it!
I thought that I was in pretty good shape
when I first started doing TRX a while ago.
But in that first class, they kept on saying:
“Oh, we’re gonna do another set of movements,
another set of movements, another set of movements…”
I felt like my body was gonna fall apart!
I realized it’s because I did not actually have very strong core muscles.
Ah, I see. Now could you explain a little bit about how
this will protect your back and improve your body control?
Sure. Well, when you have good core muscles,
then it means that you’re using the right muscles
for the right movements.
If you don’t have strong core muscles,
then you might end up over-stretching or misusing
certain muscles in your back to lift things or pull things,
and that might cause damage.
You might end up getting a strain or pulling a muscle.
But if you have good, strong core muscles,
then your body has all the right tools
for the jobs it needs to do.
TRX sounds like it really improves your overall health
and the overall way your body works together
with different muscle groups.
I’m excited to learn more about it.
So let’s get right into our next reading:
TRX
Several studies have shown
that suspension training like TRX
can provide a variety of benefits.
One such study,
conducted by the American Council on Exercise (ACE),
revealed improvements in cardiovascular and muscular health.
In addition, it revealed
reduced waist measurements and percentages of body fat.
In another study,
six weeks of suspension training exercises were
enough to improve core strength and overall balance
in a group of elderly men and women.
今天的 Usage Tip 是:"one such + 名詞" 的句型。
"one such" 表示「其中一個」,"such" 是指前面所提到的事物。
在使用這種句型的時候,前面會先提及一個群體,再透過這個結構引出該群體中的一個例子,使表述更為具體。
譬如文章裡的這一句:"one such study",
就是指前一句中所提到的 "several studies" 中的一個。
我們來看例句:
Many Asian cultures observe traditions to honor their ancestors. One such tradition is tomb sweeping.
許多亞洲文化都有紀念祖先的傳統,其中一項就是掃墓。
Okay friends, we’ve talked a little bit about what TRX is,
we’ve talked about how to do TRX,
and now it’s time to talk about the benefits of doing TRX.
How does our lesson continue?
Well, we see here that several studies have shown that suspension training like TRX can provide a variety of benefits.
One such study, conducted by the American Council on Exercise (the ACE),
revealed improvements in cardiovascular and muscular health.
Oh, very interesting.
Well, we see here that this phrase "one such study" was our usage tip for today.
And we see some other words here that we want to take a look at.
First of all, we see council.
Now, this is a meeting, and it’s usually used for consultation or advice.
So if there is a council somewhere,
usually they’re meeting to tackle or to talk about one specific problem or topic.
Yes, for example:
Maybe the town council met together to discuss the building of a new elementary school.
We also see something else here in this sentence,
and that’s the idea of muscular health.
How can we talk about that?
Muscular just means related to or affecting the muscles.
Sort of like the word we learned yesterday—cardiovascular is anything related to the heart or the blood vessels.
Muscular is talking about muscles, muscle groups—
all things related to muscle health.
So, for example,
you might have muscular pain in your leg.
That means the muscles in your leg hurt.
Okay, so these are some benefits here that we see from TRX.
We see improvements in cardiovascular and muscular health.
That’s right.
In addition, it revealed reduced waist measurements and percentages of body fat.
Okay, so here’s another benefit of TRX.
We see this word percentages here, and specifically,
we’re talking about body fat in this sentence.
We’re talking about a rate—
a number or an amount out of a hundred.
So a lot of times when you’re exercising and you’re working out,
you’re trying to get your body fat to a certain percentage of your overall weight.
That’s right.
Percentage, when used as a noun in this way,
can also be used to talk about a set or a group.
For example,
you could say that only—maybe for a teacher—
only a small percentage of her class passed the test.
Oh, that’s a disaster.
That does sound like a disaster.
That is not good at all.
Okay, so we are still talking about these benefits here, friends, for TRX.
These reduced waist measurements,
reduced body fat—these are all good things.
But we have another study here, don’t we?
That’s right, we do.
In another study, six weeks of suspension training exercises were enough
to improve core strength and overall balance
in a group of elderly men and women.
Okay, so we have a word in this sentence that I want to take a look at,
and that is the word balance.
Can you define that for us, Dave?
Absolutely.
Balance is a state in which all the different parts of something are in harmony—
they’re working together.
And sometimes we talk about this with how you feel your body is in harmony with its surroundings.
If you have good balance,
it means that you won’t easily fall over.
So for example,
you could talk about your balance when riding a bike.
Do you have good balance?
But how is TRX helping to improve balance here?
Well, it looks like they’re having a six-week study where
these special suspension training exercises are improving their core strength.
So you see, once again, core muscles playing a big part in overall health.
Alright, friends, we have more to learn in just a moment—right after today’s Info Cloud.
Hello friends and welcome to Info Cloud.
Hey Rex, you play many roles as an English teacher and a professional singer.
How do you manage to do so many things at the same time?
It’s a balancing act.
You just need to know when to do different things at different times.
It’s not easy,
but you can do it with practice.
"A balancing act"—that’s a great expression.
The phrase "balancing act" describes situations in which we deal with competing priorities,
like life, work, family, and personal time.
All of those things are important,
and we need to make sure they all get the attention they deserve.
An example could be:
A student who is balancing schoolwork, extracurricular activities, and a part-time job.
It takes effort and skill to keep up while not neglecting any of the things you need to do.
The phrase basically compares different parts of our lives
to things being weighed on an old-fashioned scale.
If the scale is balanced,
then the things it is weighing are equally valued.
You can see a similar idea in the expression "work-life balance."
Indeed, friends, when you feel overwhelmed by everything you have to do,
remember—it’s a balancing act.
Stay focused and do your tasks one at a time.
balancing act 平衡的藝術
balancing act 平衡的藝術
當你感到被所要處理的事情壓得喘不過氣的時候,記得要維持一種 balancing act,也就是「平衡的藝術」。
例如,一個學生需要在學業、課外活動和兼職工作之間找到平衡:
Doing schoolwork and a part-time job is a balancing act for Tony.
對 Tony 來說,半工半讀需要一種平衡。
雖然 balancing act 很重要,但需要經驗和技巧來管理有限的時間、處理每一件事情。

TRX
TRX
TRX equipment is very portable,
allowing users to work out wherever they can attach the straps.
However, those new to the system
should first work with a TRX professional or a personal trainer
to learn the correct techniques and avoid injury.
Whether you want to build strength, lose weight, or improve your balance,
TRX offers an innovative approach
that can help you reach your fitness goals.
接下來看形容詞 portable,意思是「可攜帶的」、「輕便的」。
譬如:
I chose a guitar over a piano because a guitar is much more portable.
我選擇吉他而不是鋼琴,因為吉他比較輕便。
或是:
My husband bought a portable power station to make coffee while camping.
我丈夫買了一個攜帶式的發電機,方便露營時煮咖啡。
Portable 的名詞是 portability,意思是「輕便」、「方便攜帶性」。
來看例句:
This product’s portability makes it ideal due to its compact design.
這款產品由於設計輕巧、便於攜帶,是理想的選擇。
Okay, thank you so much Jack.
Friends, we see that word portable right away from our language lab in this first sentence.
Let’s read it together:
“TRX equipment is very portable, allowing users to work out wherever they can attach the straps.”
Now, work out is probably one of our key words for today, friends.
Anytime we talk about exercising or exercise equipment,
we’re probably talking about working out.
This just means exercising or training.
That’s right. Maybe you can say:
“I like to work out in the park every morning before I go to school.”
How do you like to work out, friends?
Or where do you work out?
That’s something you can talk about in English.
But we see here that TRX is a very convenient type of workout,
and that is because you can attach the straps in many different places.
That’s right. However, those new to the system
should first work with a TRX professional or a personal trainer
to learn the correct techniques and avoid injury.
Ah, okay.
So if you’re interested in TRX,
it’s probably not a good idea to just go out, buy a set of straps, and try this yourself.
You need to talk to a professional.
Now I really like the way we’ve used professional here,
because you can put different words in front of it.
That’s right.
You can be a teaching professional, a TRX professional, a music professional—
a professional just refers to a job that requires special knowledge or training.
For example:
If you are sick, you should talk about your symptoms with a medical professional.
This person will know what they need to do to make you feel better.
And of course, a medical professional could be someone like a doctor or a nurse.
But here we’re not talking about doctors or nurses.
We are talking about TRX professionals or a personal trainer,
and they will teach you the right techniques—
that is, the right way of doing things.
That’s right.
Now whether you want to build strength, lose weight, or improve your balance,
TRX offers an innovative approach that can help you reach your fitness goals.
Alright, this is a great ending to our lesson, friends.
Let’s look at this again:
Whether you want to build strength, lose weight, or improve your balance,
TRX offers an innovative approach.
We want to talk about this word innovative together, friends.
If something is innovative, it means that it introduces new ideas or methods of doing something.
That’s right.
I often hear this word innovative used when we are talking about something new,
or something that people haven’t heard of before.
For example:
“The car has a new innovative design.”
The idea here is that it is solving some type of problem,
and it’s probably a new design.
That’s right. This is a word that marketing loves.
If you want to make a product look appealing to people,
say that it’s innovative in some way.
Okay, so I have some questions for you now, Dave.
Now that we’ve reached the end of our lesson,
and because you have done TRX before—
how accessible do you think this workout is to most average people?
Do you think you need to be fit before you try TRX,
or can complete beginners try it?
Complete beginners can try it, because there are special classes
that are for people who are new to this system.
And again, remember that you can adjust the difficulty of an exercise
based upon the position of your body
relative to the straps and where they’re attached on the ceiling.
So if you need a little bit more help, just adjust your body—
or ask the professional to help you know how to adjust your body
to make the exercise a little bit easier while you’re starting out.
Very interesting.
Alright, friends, we’ll be right back after today’s Fun Fact.
Come back here, you—oh, hello, fact!
Friends, I’m Detective Ernest Finder,
and I have a fun fact for you today!
I’ll get you later!
Did you know that many people work out a lot more than you and I?
Ha! It’s true—it’s true!
But one of these men, whose name was Lasha Talakhadze,
lifted 600 pounds off the ground and over his head.
It is the world record!
I probably said his name wrong…
but that is today’s Fun Fact!
Come back here!
Well, we’ve had a fantastic time talking about TRX with you guys.
But Anne Marie, this time I have a question for you.
Okay.
Would you like to try TRX? Why or why not?
Well, to be honest, TRX is a little intimidating for me,
intimidate KK[ɪnˋtɪmə͵det] DJ[inˋtimideit] 威嚇;脅迫
intimidating adj. 嚇人的,令人生畏的
because sometimes trying a new type of exercise can make me a little nervous,
especially if there’s equipment involved that I don’t know how to use.
But maybe if I took a class or had a personal trainer,
I would be willing to try it.
Oh, alright! I’ll make some calls for you.
Okay, sounds good!
What about you, friends?
Is TRX something that you’d like to try?
Talk about that in English!
Well, that’s all the time we have for today.
My name is Anne Marie,
And I’m David.
And we’ll see you next time right here on Studio Classroom.
Bye!
