Hello, friends!
Welcome to Let’s Talk in English.
My name is Esther.
And my name is Garrett.
Today’s topic is:
Which is better—working from home or at an office?
Working from home or at an office—where do you want to get your work done?
What’s good about each of these?
We’ll try to compare them in our lesson today.
When you’re working from home, you’re probably using your computer and your phone to work.
You may be writing and meeting with people online.
Whereas at the office, you’re together with all your co-workers in the same space and can quickly communicate with them.
Right! You can see their expressions, you can get their responses immediately, and you don’t need to wait.
Well, friends, let’s learn more about these differences in today’s reading.
Is it better to work from home or at an office?
When you work from home, you save time.
You don’t have to travel to work and back.
It is also more comfortable.
You don’t have to put on office clothes—you can work in your pajamas!
And co-workers won’t distract you either.
But if you work at an office, it’s easier to focus on your work.
You aren’t tempted to do other things, such as housework.
It’s also easier to work with your team and share ideas at an office.
And you can be with your co-workers and build relationships.
Thanks for that, Esther!
Those are some great things for us to talk about in our lesson today.
And as we go through it, let’s try to find our Find It! answer.
The question is: What is Sarah tempted to do at home?
What is Sarah tempted to do at home?
Now, when you’re tempted to do something, it means that you really want to do something you shouldn’t be doing.
Exactly!
So, what is the answer?
That’s your job—to find it!
Now, let’s go to Sonya for our keywords.
"You wouldn’t have to put on office clothes."
"You could work in your pajamas."
"It’s easier to focus on work."
"At home, I am tempted to do other things."
"Such as housework."
Wouldn’t it be nice to work from home instead of at the office?
No, I like working at the office.
If you work from home, you save time.
You wouldn’t have to travel to work and back.
True, but I like doing that.
And you wouldn’t have to put on office clothes.
You could work in your pajamas.
I wouldn’t like that.
Friends, in today’s lesson, we have a “Which is better?” lesson.
We’re talking about whether it’s better to work at the office or to work at home.
And Sam wonders what it would be like to work at home.
He wonders if it would be better, right?
He says, “Would it be nice?”
So, he’s really thinking about this.
But Sarah tells us that she likes working at the office.
Yeah! She doesn’t think that would be nice.
She likes working at the office.
"I like working at the office" is today’s calendar phrase.
"I like working at the office."
"I like working at the office."
"我喜歡在公司工作。"
Working from home would be nice.
I like working at the office.
You wouldn’t have to go to work and back.
I like working at the office.
You could work in your pajamas.
I like working at the office.
And co-workers wouldn’t distract you.
Good point! You should work from home.
I like working at the office.
"I like working at the office."
"我喜歡在公司工作。"
Now, Sam tells us why he thinks it would be nice to work from home.
Now, Sam tells us why he thinks it would be nice to work from home.
He says that you save time and you wouldn’t need to travel to work and back.
That’s true!
You don’t have to get in your car or on the subway and go all the way to work.
That can feel like wasted time sometimes, right?
Now, we heard this sentence: "to work and back."
Sonya, can you help us with sentences like this?
Sam
"You wouldn’t have to travel to work and back."
"片語動詞 + to + 地點 + and back"
"Race you to the tree and back!"
"I’m flying to Hong Kong and back in one day."
"It takes me an hour to get to school and back."
Thank you, Sonya!
Sarah agrees with Sam, but she likes traveling to work and back.
She does! She says, "I like doing that."
But Sam says, "You wouldn’t have to put on office clothes," right?
When we wear clothes, we can also use the words "put on."
Because when you work at the office, you can’t be wearing clothes you might wear at home.
You need to wear office clothes.
Often, these are clothes that are a little more formal, but they can be less comfortable.
So if you’re working at home,
your co-workers don’t see you. You can wear whatever you’d like.
So you can wear comfortable clothes, like pajamas, right?
People often wear special clothes that are comfortable when they go to sleep. These are called pajamas, right?
We especially wear pajamas in the winter when it’s cold.
They keep you warm, right?
But at the office,
you wouldn’t be able to wear pajamas. Some people might even need to wear a shirt and a tie.
Well, would you like to wear pajamas while you’re working?
Sarah wouldn’t. She wouldn’t like that, right?
Sounds like Sarah really enjoys going to the office.
But I can kind of understand because Sarah is a mom and she has kids, so for some parents, going to the office might feel like they can take a break from their kids.
One other part of this,
I think, is sometimes when you wear nicer clothes,
your way of thinking changes too. You get ready to work hard and take your work seriously.
And Sarah likes to be around people.
She has lots of friends at the office.
She really enjoys working at the office.
So, what do you think, friends?
Would it be nice to wear pajamas as you get your work done while you’re sitting at home?
Would it be nice to save time—save time on transportation?
That would be nice.
Well, friends,
it’s time to go to a break now.
Before we talk more about which is better,
we will be right back just after this.
Let’s talk in English every day.
Every day, that’s the way.
Welcome back, friends!
Let’s talk about pajamas.
In many places, when it’s cold,
people will wear nice thick pajamas to keep themselves warm.
These are very comfortable clothes to sleep in,
and they’re a popular gift
that parents give their kids on Christmas Eve.
They can wear them
as they wait for the rest of their gifts on Christmas morning, right?
People often take family pictures in their Christmas pajamas or outfits.
Let’s continue our lesson.
If you work from home,
co-workers won’t distract you either.
But at the office,
it’s easier to focus on work.
At home,
I am tempted to do other things,
such as housework.
I wouldn’t be, also.
I like being with my co-workers in person.
You can build relationships.
Good point!
And at the office,
it’s easier to work with your team and share ideas.
Now, Sam really believes that
working from home is better than working at the office.
He gives us another reason.
Yeah, he says that when you’re working from home,
your co-workers won’t distract you.
If someone distracts you,
that means you’re focused on something,
but something else takes your attention away, right?
Because maybe your co-workers,
the people you work with, might try to talk to you
or ask you questions.
Then, you can’t focus on what you’re doing at the office.
Now, they might have good comments for you, a good question,
or something they want to ask you,
but this can be distracting when you have an important project
you’re trying to finish before a deadline.
Well, Sarah thinks differently.
For her,
she thinks it’s easier to focus on work at the office.
Now, at the office,
Sarah doesn’t have other things she needs to do.
Maybe at home,
she needs to take care of her kids or do housework.
But at the office,
she can just think about her work.
Sometimes, it can be easier to focus on work when you see
other people around you doing the same thing.
Then it will be easier to focus.
Now, the word easy means not hard to do.
Easier is a word we use when we compare two things—
which one is less hard to do.
We can use the word easier.
Well, friends,
it’s now time to go to Sonia
as she explains more from our previous sentence.
Sarah
"But at the office, it’s easier to focus on work."
Dan is at the post office.
Dan
或是
Many people are at the beach.
There are twenty students in the classroom.
Let’s stay in the house and play some games.
Thank you, Sonia!
Now, if you get tempted to do something,
it means you get distracted.
You think about doing something that you shouldn’t be doing at that time.
It might not be a bad thing,
it’s just not what you’re supposed to be doing right now, friends.
This takes us to our Find It! question.
What is Sarah tempted to do at home?
She is tempted to do housework.
Yes, when she is at home,
she thinks about doing other things.
Now, housework may include things like doing your laundry, washing the dishes, or sweeping the floor.
Another word for that would be doing your chores—
chores that you need to do around the house.
Well, Sam says that he wouldn’t be tempted to do other things at home.
Yeah,
maybe he doesn’t like doing housework.
Anyway, well,
Sarah says she likes being with her co-workers in person.
That’s another reason she likes working in the office, right?
She likes to see them face to face and talk to them because there she can build relationships.
That means getting to know people.
You can build relationships in many different places,
including the office, right?
You can build relationships online,
but building relationships in person is probably easier.
Sarah says at the office,
it’s easier to work with your team and share ideas.
You can quickly talk with your co-workers,
try to get their opinions, and adjust what you’re doing.
Friends,
what do you think? Talk about this as we go and review our keywords.
Here’s your first keyword for today: put on.
Put on a raincoat.
It’s raining outside.
Pajamas
Pajamas—Amy is wearing her favorite pajamas.
Easy
Can you give me an easier task to do?
Tempt
I’m tempted to stay home tonight.
Housework
My mom finished all the housework.
Oh, friends, those are your keywords!
Keep on practicing,
and now it’s your turn.
Today’s words are put on, pajamas, easy, tempted, and housework.
Now, it’s your turn to use them in a sentence.
First,
Can you help me with the housework?
Did you put on a clean shirt today?
What are you wearing?
That’s right! Did you put on a clean shirt today?
Next,
It’s not easy to wake up at 5 AM.
I know it’s hard.
Next,
These are very comfortable.
We’re talking about a kind of clothes, yes.
These pajamas are very comfortable.
Last,
Are you ever tempted to eat too much?
You’re correct!
Are you ever tempted to eat too much?
Great job, friends!
Come back again for your turn!
Wouldn’t it be nice to work from home instead of at the office?
No,
I like working at the office.
If you work from home,
you save time—you wouldn’t have to travel to work and back.
True,
but I like doing that.
And you wouldn’t have to put on office clothes.
You could work in your pajamas.
I wouldn’t like that.
If you work from home,
co-workers won’t distract you either.
But at the office,
it’s easier to focus on work.
At home,
I am tempted to do other things,
such as housework.
I wouldn’t be, also.
I like being with my co-workers in person.
You can build relationships.
Good point!
And at the office,
it’s easier to work with your team and share ideas.
One, two, let’s review.
So, David,
if you had the choice, would you work from home or at the office?
I’d work from home, of course.
Really?
Why?
I could save a lot of time.
I wouldn’t have to travel to work and back.
Well,
that’s true.
And I wouldn’t have to put on office clothes.
Well, that’s true too.
Yeah,
I could work in my pajamas.
Your pajamas?
Sure, why not?
And I wouldn’t have co-workers distract me.
Well, that’s true.
But it’s easier for me to focus on work at the office.
Why is that?
At home,
I’m tempted to do other things, like housework.
Oh no!
Like playing with my dogs?
No.
And besides, I like being around my co-workers.
We can share ideas and work together in person.
Good point.
But I would still like to work in my pajamas.
No,
that’s a bad idea.
Now let’s review.
Here’s your first question:
Why do you save time working from home?
Why do you save time working from home?
You can find the answer in the conversation.
A. You don’t have to travel to work and back.
Here’s our other question:
What are you tempted to do at home?
What are you tempted to do at home?
Let’s go to some of our friends to hear their answers.
What am I tempted to do at home?
Ah haha,
sometimes I just want to sit in the living room and do nothing,
or maybe read a book or watch a movie.
But those dishes,
they can wait. Haha.
What about you?
What am I tempted to do at home?
Anything but work.
I like to search online.
That’s kind of fun.
And sometimes I like to watch TV.
I really am tempted to take a nap.
I can do that anytime.
Maybe now.
What am I tempted to do at home?
When I’m at home,
I’m tempted to eat a lot of snacks.
If I have chips or candy at home,
I’ll just sit on the couch and eat them all day.
What are you tempted to do at home?
What am I tempted to do at home?
Well, when I’m working from home,
I am tempted to do many things.
I’m tempted to organize the fridge.
I’m tempted to prepare lunch.
I’m tempted to sweep the floor.
I’m tempted to reply to work emails away.
I am supposed to do that when I’m working from home.
What am I tempted to do at home?
That’s an interesting question.
When I am home,
I like to rest or do little jobs to help my wife usually.
I am tempted to do some housework,
but if I’m tired, I take a nap.
I love taking naps in the afternoon sometimes.
It’s hard to do any work when I’m at home.
Friends, thanks
so much for joining us.
We hope you think about this question as we end our lesson.
And of course,
don’t forget to join us again tomorrow,
right here on Let’s Talk in English.
Goodbye!
