His job was watching the village’s flock of sheep.
He watched them in a field near some trees. He was not far from the village, but he was all by himself. The sheep don’t do anything but eat. The shepherd boy thought, No one is around but my dog. There’s nothing to do, and no one to talk to.
He complained to himself.
Like in many stories, we start with Once or we might start with Once upon a time sometimes, and we hear about our first character, right?
It is a shepherd boy. A shepherd is someone who takes care of sheep.
Yeah, they need to take care of them, and they make their money off of those sheep.
This shepherd boy’s job was watching the whole village’s flock of sheep.
Let’s talk about this word flock. Flock means a group of, and we use it when we talk about groups of animals like sheep.
Yeah, sheep like to live in big groups.
Sheep are animals that are often white because they have a lot of soft wool on the outside of them.
While this shepherd boy watched the sheep in a field near some trees, and he was not far from the village, he was all by himself. He was alone.
If you are far from a place, that means it takes a long time to get there, or there is a big distance.
The shepherd boy was not far; he was near.

If someone likes to complain, they keep thinking of all the bad things or the wrong things, and they don’t have a good attitude.

His father said, If you see a wolf, call for help, and then he thought of something to do, right?
Of course, if there’s a wolf, there might be danger. Wolves look like dogs; they’re a type of dog that lives in the wild, and they can be dangerous.
A wolf will eat sheep, so he needs to take care of all the sheep.
But if he tells others that there is a wolf coming, people will come because they don’t want their sheep to be eaten by a wolf.
That will happen if he cries wolf and I cry out...

And what did they do? Well, they actually stopped what they were doing and went to see if he was okay.
Now, we heard the boy’s cry. How is that different from “cry out”? Sonia, please help us.

This is a famous story. "Crying wolf" is a phrase we hear regularly in the English language now.
When you cry wolf, it means you yell out about some danger or something else
that’s not really happening.
It’s a good phrase to learn and use.

or not sure what to do. If you’re sheepish, then you’re afraid of danger.
You’re afraid of taking risks, even when maybe you should take them, right?
You can say, "Don’t be sheepish! You can do it! I’m sure you will pass that test."

But when you cry wolf, there isn’t actually a wolf, right?
But it’s a phrase, or an idiom, that we use in the English language.
Now, let’s talk about this boy. He is a shepherd boy, which means he takes care of sheep, right?
That’s not an exciting job. He gets bored and wants to spend time with people.
Yesterday, he cried wolf two times. But did the wolf really come? No, there was no wolf.
But the people did come, and the boy liked that. He thought it was fun, right? He fooled them, and he thought it was fun. He laughed when they came. Exactly!
So, what will happen as we continue our story?
Will he keep crying wolf?
Or will the people take him away from his job or just ignore him?
We’ll find out as we go through the rest of it.
Now, let’s go to our "find it" question. Our question is:

And the boy noticed. He ran quickly toward the village, right?
If you are going towards some place, it means you are facing that direction.
So he’s running to tell the people that there really is a wolf.
You might walk toward a specific place or look toward somewhere.
The boy cried, wolf, wolf, but they paid no attention to him. They ignored him.
They didn’t believe him because he fooled them three times already.
Yeah, of course, he was just lying again. He had done it many times.
And the wolf carried a sheep away into the trees.
So, this time, he wasn’t lying.
He wasn’t fooling the village people. He was telling the truth.
Exactly! Did the boy cry wolf this time?
Well, he said the words "wolf," but he didn’t cry wolf, as we understand the meaning of that phrase to be, right?
Because this time, it was real, and sadly, a wolf carried one sheep away into the trees. Hmm… What’s going to happen to the boy?
