◆關於芭芭拉‧漢默爾 Barbara Hammer

芭芭拉‧漢默爾1939年生於加州，美國加州大學洛杉磯分校（UCLA）心理學學士，舊金山州立大學英國文學與電影雙碩士。漢默爾有過一次婚姻，三十歲出櫃公開承認自己的女同志身分，並開始拍攝實驗影片。漢默爾為女同志與女性主義實驗電影的先驅，也是美國最創新最前衛的獨立製片工作者之一，作品產量驚人，至今已有實驗片、紀錄片等各種類型的作品達百部以上，題材多半與情慾、性別、社會與歷史相關，或與這些議題的交互影響與演變有關。她選擇以電影/錄像作為一種視覺藝術形式，試圖藉此揭露為人們所忽略的人事物。她的作品凸顯並頌揚被社會邊緣化的人物，並述說他/她們不為人所知的故事。她的電影作品大膽實驗、層次豐富，挑戰觀眾心智，期望藉此引領人們參與社會改造。其以同志史為主題的「同志三部曲」：《硝酸鹽之吻》（為柏林影展白熊獎Polar Bear Award得主）、《柔情自白》與《歷史課》，為同志電影與獨立電影中的重要經典，獲獎無數。其於2003年所攝之作品《抗戰樂園》亦備受肯定，曾於2004-6期間於Sundance電視台的紀錄片頻道播映。台灣曾於2000女性影展為芭芭拉‧漢默爾做過專題介紹，放映《櫃中的女人》、《柔情自白》、《在南非出櫃》、《硝酸鹽之吻》等四部影片。甫結束的2006女性影展亦繼續追蹤介紹其最新作品《另類‧愛人‧同志》，與之前未曾在台灣露臉的《芭芭拉‧漢默爾七○年代短片集》、《歷史課》、《抗戰樂園》合組成此次小型的「芭芭拉‧漢默爾回顧展」。

Barbara Hammer was born on May 15, 1939 in Hollywood, California. She is a graduate of the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) with a degree in Psychology. Hammer also holds two Master of Arts degrees from San Francisco State University: one English Literature and one in Film. She also took postgraduate classes in the field of digital media.

Hammer started creating experimental films in her early thirties. She was married and teaching at a community college in Santa Rosa. Also in her early thirties she came out as a lesbian after talking with another student in a Women's Lib group.

Barbara Hammer is known for creating groundbreaking experimental films dealing with women's issues on gender roles, lesbian relationships and coping with ageing and family. Hammer is responsible for some of the first lesbian-made films in history, including such landmarks experimental shots as Dyketactics (1974) and Women I Love (1976) (Olsion, p. 103).

In the past thirty years, Hammer has come a long way in making films. In the 70s she worked with 16-millimeter films. During the 80s she worked with experimental video art. In the 90s she incorporated the World Wide Web in her autobiography. Now in the year 2000, she has made her first digital video feature documentary Devotion. This documentary deals with the historical investigation of a Japanese documentary filmmaking collective.

Hammer's films were not understood but she has progressed in her filmmaking winning awards and grants. She is the recipient of the Frameline 2000 award and the Creative Capital Grant.

Hammer is also credited with the creation of a website called "Lesbians." This website deals with numerous issues related to Lesbianism.

The short films of Barbara Hammer from the seventies, including Dyketactics, Menses, Superdyke, Women I Love, Multiple Orgasm, and Double Strength. These films do not have much language and are accessible. They are sexual, funny, and reflect the enthusiasm of the 1970's womens movement.

芭芭拉‧漢默爾的第一部劇情片。透過過去與現在的影音對話，交織著邊緣人物們禁忌不可見的歷史，與當代四位男女同志的性活動。獲獎無數。

Nitrate Kisses explores images of lesbian and gay culture in this first feature-length film by Hammer, a pioneer of lesbian cinema. Archival footage from the first gay film in the U.S., Lot in Sodom (1993), by James Sibley Watson and Melville Webber, as well as footage from German narrative and documentary films of the '30s are interwoven in this multi-faceted construction. Questions of a forbidden and invisible history of a marginalized people are put in context by the contemporary sexual activities - photographed by Hammer - of four gay and lesbian couples.

Out in South Africa, a documentary about a country in the state of transition; specifically of lesbians and gays, black and white, Indian and Asian, from townships, cities and rural areas who speak of their lives and desires as homosexuals in post-apartheid South Africa. Hammer was invited to have a retrospective in summer, 1994, at the first Gay and Lesbian film festival on the African continent. She wanted to do more than screen her films and videos; she wanted to teach video production skills in the townships. These workshops provide the deeply moving stories lesbians and gays told to one another.

◎《櫃中女人》The Female Closet （60 min/DVD/color/1998/English/中文字幕）

本片紀錄三位女性藝術家的同性戀生活，背景橫跨一整個世紀。刻畫對象包括一同生活在紐約的女攝影師Alice Austen與她的情人Gertrude；以及來自柏林的拼貼藝術家Hannah Hoch與德國作家Til Brugman。

The Female Closet is a 60 minute documentary that uses archival photographs, home movies, interviews, and other visual materials to explore the closeted lesbian histories of artists Alice Austen, Hannah Höch and Nicole Eisenman. Utilizing groundbreaking research, newly discovered home movies, and archival photographs, and other visual sources, The Female Closet. is a cultural interrogation of the closeted and not-so-closeted lives of three women artists.

歷史的吊詭，正是在於寫史者本身具有一定的立場因而也必然有一定偏見。芭芭拉‧漢默爾在走過三十年的創作生涯後，以虛帶實地將大量的影音史料重新詮釋，「消化」成這部以幽默取代怨懟和控訴的女同志觀點的《歷史課》，同時也嘲諷了歷史詮釋的偏頗本質。

這部紀錄片探索藝術家在戰亂時期如何安身立命這一嚴肅議題。主人翁鎖定在二次世界大戰期間在法國南部卡西斯反抗軍區居住的藝術家馬提斯、波奈爾等人，導演也夫子自道地映照出自己面對動亂世局的自省。是歷史探索，也是一位藝術工作者對創作與社會責任之間關係的省思。

Barbara Hammer uncovers, in an ugly time, a fascinating world by the sea where the beauty of the scenery may have rubbed off on the inhabitants. We are introduced to Marie-Ange in the fishing villages of Cassis. She unrequitedly, brazenly, and without fear changed thousands of ID cards for Jews who crossed her path…Hammer in turn weaves the artwork and writings of the renowned painters Matisse, who was situated in Nice during the war, and Bonnard, who kept a correspondence with his friend throughout…

◎《另類‧愛人‧同志》Lover Other（55 min/ DVD/2006/English/中文字幕）

克洛‧卡恩（Claude Cahun）及馬歇爾‧摩爾（Moore Marcel）是一對法國超現實主義藝術家，兩人原名露西‧史沃（Lucy Shwob）與蘇珊娜‧馬勒埃柏（Suzanna Malherbe）。她們是第一批將女同志性生活帶入藝術的藝術家，同時也是真誠勇敢的反戰份子。藉由芭芭拉‧漢默爾的影像探索，我們看到她們為世人遺忘的精彩藝術與生命。

French Surrealist lesbian sisters, Claude Cahun and Marcel Moore, played by Kathleen Chalfant and Marty Pottenger leave Paris for Jersey Isle in 1937. They collaborate creating gender-bending photographs, collages, and writing. During the WWII Nazi occupation they perform heroic and imaginative acts of Resistance as "The Unknown Soldier". Captured, imprisoned, sentenced to death, they attempt suicide. They are eventually reprieved.
