基甸．菲爾博士（Dr. Gideon Fell）是卡爾筆下最著名的神探，他是一位體型碩大，略微肥胖的男人（這個雛形是卡爾以G.K.卻斯特頓為藍本所塑造的），走路需要靠枴杖輔助才走得動，職業是辭典編纂家，後來是專門研究英國人飲用啤酒習慣的學者，同時也是一名業餘偵探，專門破解密室謎團及不可能犯罪，一共有二十三個長篇、五個短篇和五個廣播劇本
