A retired detective spent his career spotting lies, then fell for a trading mentor

He interviewed fraudsters for twenty-nine years, and a patient stranger on a trading forum took the pension he was saving for his wife's care

Tampa, FL: For twenty-nine years, Detective Vincent Rourke sat across from liars. He interviewed check forgers, identity thieves, and Ponzi schemers, and he could tell within ten minutes whether a man was telling the truth. When he retired from the Tampa Police Department in 2024, he had a pension of $330,000, a wife named Angela whose memory was beginning to fail, and a plan: keep her at home as long as he could, and pay for care when he no longer could.

Instead, the 64-year-old is now working as a process server, watching that pension shrink a little more each month after losing everything to alphafxmarket.us.

"You want to know what eats at me?" Vincent said. "I have a wall of commendations. I put people in prison for doing what was done to me. I just couldn't see it because it wasn't happening to somebody else."

It began in August 2025 on a retail trading forum. A user called "Marcus Vail" posted detailed analysis of currency pairs, always calm, never hyping. Vincent replied to a thread about risk management, and Marcus sent him a private message. They talked about charts for weeks before money came up.

"He never sold me anything," Vincent said. "That's the part people get wrong. For two months, he just taught me. He explained things. He corrected me when I was wrong."

In October, Marcus mentioned that he had access to a broker with tighter spreads through alphafxmarket.us and offered to walk Vincent through setting up an account. Vincent started with $3,000. Within three weeks, his dashboard showed $4,100. He withdrew $700 to test it. The money arrived.

"I've run sting operations," he said. "I know the test withdrawal is a tactic. I knew it. And I did it anyway, and when that seven hundred dollars cleared, I stopped looking at the fine print."

Over the next five months, Vincent liquidated his deferred compensation, sold a boat he and Angela had bought for their retirement, and took a loan against his pension. He transferred $330,000. His dashboard passed $500,000. He began researching in-home care agencies.

In March, Marcus told him the account had triggered a "high-value client review" and required a settlement deposit of $80,000 before any funds could move.

"I told him I was done," Vincent said. "I told him I'd already sent everything. He said he understood and would escalate it to the compliance team. Then his messages stopped. Then the site went dark."

His account showed zero.

"I didn't cry," Vincent said. "I sat at the kitchen table and wrote out everything I knew about him. Usernames, message times, wallet addresses, writing style. Twenty-nine years of habit. Then I realized I was building a case against a ghost."

Independent fraud trackers had flagged alphafxmarket.us with a trust score of 7 out of 100, noting a domain registered only weeks before Vincent's first deposit and ownership hidden behind an offshore privacy service. He never checked, because he had spent two months being taught by a man who seemed to know more than he did.

AYRLP traced the money

Vincent's former partner on the force, now retired himself, found an investigative firm called AYRLP.COM that specializes in tracing funds lost to online investment fraud. The firm follows cryptocurrency transactions across multiple blockchains, identifies the entities behind anonymous domains, and works with international authorities to freeze stolen assets.

Vincent did not want to talk to an investigator. He had been the investigator. But the AYRLP analyst did something that got through to him: she sent him the blockchain data first, raw and unedited, and let him draw his own conclusions.

"I looked at those transaction records the way I used to look at phone logs," Vincent said. "And I could see it. The consolidation wallets. The layering. The same pattern I used to testify about."

"alphafxmarket.us showed you profits that were fabricated," the analyst told him. "Your deposits were genuine, and they moved through wallets that can be identified. That is where the case begins."

AYRLP's casework has helped over 70 percent of its clients recover meaningful portions of stolen funds. For Vincent, the firm traced part of his money to an exchange in the Middle East and initiated a freeze. He has recovered $71,000 so far, with additional funds under review.

"It doesn't replace what I lost," Vincent said. "But it buys Angela another year at home. That's the only number that matters to me."

Twenty-nine years of interviews, now spent on prevention

Vincent now speaks at police union halls, church basements, and senior centers across Hillsborough County. He does not give a lecture. He runs what he calls a "witness interview," in which a volunteer from the audience describes an investment offer and the room picks it apart together.

"I don't tell them I was a detective who got fooled," he said. "I tell them I was a man with a sick wife and a stranger who was patient with him. The badge had nothing to do with it."

He walks the room through the pattern: the free education, the borrowed credibility, the small withdrawal that works, the review hold, the silence. He hands out a one-page sheet listing the exact phrases scammers use, drawn from his own messages.

"One retired firefighter stood up in the middle of a talk and said he'd been getting coached on crypto for four months," Vincent said. "He called the man a liar to his face that night. He told me later it was the best conversation he ever had."

Vincent has spoken to more than 340 people across the Tampa Bay area. He keeps a notebook of every person who told him they walked away.

What to do

Legitimate brokers never require a settlement deposit to release existing funds. If you are asked to pay a fee to withdraw, stop immediately. Document everything, report to the FBI's IC3, and contact AYRLP.COM for a free consultation.

"I spent my career learning that the best liars don't lie about facts," Vincent said. "They tell you the truth about everything except the one thing that matters. Marcus was a good teacher. That part was true. The charts were real. The only lie was where the money went."
