“Oliver Twist” was a 2005 British drama film directed by Roman Polanski, based on the novel of the same title in 1838 by Charles Dickens. This movie described the orphan Oliver’s miserable experiences, and finally Oliver was adopted by a good man, Mr. Brownlow.
Oliver Twist, played by Barney Clark, was an orphan who born into a life of poverty and misfortune before he was adopted. Jack Dawkins, who was cast by Harry Eden, was a boy-thief who took Oliver to his home that he shared with many other young pickpockets. Fagin, played by Ben Kingsley, was a crooked man who controlled these young gangs. Mr. Brownlow, who was cast by Edward Hardwicke, was a kind gentleman saved Oliver’s life and adopted him.
In the movie, I saw the social problems were very serious. The rich led a gracious life, but the poor strived for food constantly; men had more power than women, and children were provided for under the terms of the Poor Law. It was not difficult to see that the society in eighteenth century was full of anomic and unfair.
Besides, I thought there were some interesting symbols in this movie. First, the main character, Twist, as to imply this poor boy had a twist or irregular life by his last name. Next, the old man-Fagin. Although he controlled these young boys to steal other people’s property, he treated Oliver very well and he repented before his execution. Third, in the middle of the movie, the woman Nancy called Mr. Brownlow to meet her on London Bridge . The meeting on London Bridge represented the collision of two worlds unlikely to contact — the idyllic world of Brownlow, and the atmosphere of degradation in which Nancy lived. On the bridge, Nancy was given the chance to cross over to the better way of life that the others represent, but she rejected that opportunity, and by the time all three have left the bridge, the possibility had vanished forever. Therefore, the secret she met Mr. Brownlow was been found out soon, and she was killed by the violent man-Bill.
However, I found the execution of the ending a little too flawed. Bill's accidental suicide looked a little silly and Oliver had quite a few chances to escape but he didn’t. All he did was standing there for Bill to grab him. Besides, although the sequence was touching where Oliver visited Fagan in prison and forgave him, I thought it could have done better with. It looks as though Oliver had easily forgiven and quickly forgotten all the sins he had committed, that he wanted to kill him and was partially responsible for Nancy's death.
In conclusion, I thought this movie was good for all ages to watch; even I wouldn’t give too much praise about it. The movie represented how pure and forgivable Oliver was, and it’s too difficult to believe it. However, the director made some similarities followed by the original novel. His good storytelling skill made us to know this story and Charles Dickens more, so I could recommend you to watch this movie-“Oliver Twist”.

"The Hours," adapted from Michael Cunningham’s original novel, derived from Virginia Woolf Mrs. Dalloway. This movie describes three women in three different times have the same idea based on the book.
Mrs. Woolf, played by Nicole Kidman, is a writer with mental illness in twenties. She can only extend her gloomy motions when she is writing. Mrs. Brown, who is cast by Julianne Moore, is an introverted housewife in fifties. Even she leads a successful-looking married life, some ambiguous always strike her. Mrs. Dalloway, played by Meryl Streep, is an editor who lives in the twenty centuries. During the routines, she found that the happiness is too short to hold it tightly.
Although they are three different women, they have one thing in common. That is, they are all lesbians, no matter it is obvious or not. In the movie we can see that, the kiss Mrs. Woolf with her sister when they say goodbye, or Mrs. Brown consoles her neighbor with her lips paste on, and Mrs. Dalloway lives together with her lover, Sally. Nowadays, lesbians (or gays) are approbatory. However, it’s unbelievable to happen in that period. Therefore, it is not difficult to understand they are tough and struggle when they live in which people just called “the normal life”.
Another reason they have in common is they are connected by the book Mrs. Dalloway. Mrs. Woolf is the writer of this book. Many years later, Mrs. Brown read this book bewitchingly during her boring life. And in 2001, Clarissa is called Mrs. Dalloway because she has the same name as the main character. Therefore, this movie was gone though in these three different times, making it becomes more special and spectacular.
However, after watching this movie, It’s hard to say if I like this movie or not. But it makes me feel oppressive. It makes me to think about, what is life? When Mr. Woolf asks Mrs. Woolf, “Why do you need to put someone die in your novel?” “Someone has to die in order that the rest of us should value life more.” she said. When she cares her illness and writing a novel in the suburbs, she decides to go back to London . At the beginning, I thought she would just go back and enjoy her crazy life, but in the end, she drowned herself to end her life. In addition, Mrs. Brown also chooses to suicide because she desires to escape her life. But she gives up because of the love with her son and her husband. And, Mrs. Dalloway, on the other hand, she enjoys her life with her lover, and she also takes care of her ex- boyfriend Richie, who feels pain in AIDS. However, after Richie leaped off the building to death, she realizes that the life is so weak, and the happiness is too short.
Consequently, can we control our lives or not?
Nowadays, it's hard to accept people suicide on purpose just like Mrs. Woolf and Richie’s death, or Mrs. Brown’s death. Even more, they will be criticized by people, and that’s the feeling what I got after watching this movie. It depresses me too much! However, until now I realize that, although we cannot control our life, we can enjoy it. Mrs. Woolf and Richie choose to die because they live for the purpose of someone, now they want to die also for this reason. Mrs. Brown also wants to enjoy a new life, so she leaves her family after she born her second baby. Finally in the end of the movie, Mrs. Woolf wrote a letter to her husband before she died, and these sentences impressed me a lot. “Dear Leonard, to look life in the face...always to look life in the face, and to know it for what it is, at last, to know it, to love it for what it is, and then...to put it away.”
In conclusion, these stories in The Hours give me a very big shock is that, the things happen in our daily life and the thinking across time and space, are so close and affect each other. After watching this movie, “The Hours”, I have a deeper sort of understanding of life.
