1. "Oliver Twist" 2011/06/08 00:36
This movie is based on the 1838 novel with the same name written by Charles Dickens. The story focuses on a young orphan, Oliver Twist, and his interaction between people around him. In my opinion, 2005 version is more attractive. It makes me clearly understand the time Dickens live and the Victorian idea that poor and criminals are evil at birth. The author uses the character, Oliver, to challenge this idea. In fact, I saw the point that Dickens wants others to understand. He thought a corrupt environment is the source of vice.
In this movie, Oliver is shocked when he sees Artful Dodger pick a stranger’s pocket. After that, when he is forced to do the same thing, he begs to be allowed to run away and die in the fields. When I see that scene, there is a sentence appearing in my brain,”Everyone was born with kindness”. However, when one is facing the problem of living, what he or she will do is unpredictable. I consider that Oliver is a courageous and believable child hero because of his absolute purity and virtue.
Personally, I would recommend 2005 version to people who totally don’t understand the lives of paupers. You can see the hierarchical-structured society in the movie and think about surroundings around us. There are people who live elegantly and richly. On contrast, there are people who live as flies, flying around to find where they can stay and where the food is. If you want to know how lives are different between the poor and the rich, go see this movie.
2. "The Piano" 2011/06/08 00:15
This movie is a 1993 New Zealand drama film about a mute pianist and her daughter, set during the mid-19th century on the west coast of New Zealand . The film was written and directed by Jane Campion, and stars Holly Hunter, Harvey Keitel, Sam Neill, and Anna Paquin. Before I see this movie, I saw one of its music video in class (Literature and Film). At that moment, I saw a touching scene that Ada McGrath’s index finger was cut by her so-called husband. In her eyes, it seems that “if this is all you want, I give it to you.” The film ends with the Thomas Hood quote, from his poem "Silence," which also starts the film: "There is a silence where hath been no sound. There is a silence where no sound may be in the cold grave under the deep deep sea."
This movie tells about a Scotswoman, Ada McGrath, who was sold into marriage to New Zealand . She hasn’t spoken a word since she was six. She expresses herself through playing her piano and using sign language interpreted by her daughter, Flora McGrath. Another warm scene is that Ada and her daughter spent an afternoon playing the piano and dancing at the beach with Baines, who agreed to take the piano back. However, after that afternoon, Ada is surprised to find that he has had the piano put into perfect tune after its rough journey. Finally, they fell into love with each other.
Personally, I think it is a good-ending movie because they leave the sad place together at the end. Although Ada ’s index finger was chopped, Baines let her use mechanical one instead. You can see how they strive for lives. In an epilogue, she describes her life with Baines and Flora in Nelson, where she has started to give piano lessons in their new home.
