Protest可作名詞與動詞，都是表「抗議」，但是在發音上就不太一樣。當protest作名詞時的重音是在第一音節，當動詞時則是在第二音節。另外，動詞的protest又有及物與不及物之分，作及物動詞時其後直接加抗議對象作受詞，如下句:
This organization’s objective was to protest U.S. nuclear-weapons testing.
這個組識的目標是抗議美國的核武試爆。
如果protest作不及物動詞時，其後常接介係詞against, about, at, over等，再接抗議的對象，如下句:
Thousands of demonstrators gathered to protest against electoral fraud.
數千名示威群眾集結抗議選舉舞弊。
而protest作名詞時，字尾加er成為protester是指「抗議者」，字尾加ant變成Protestant則是指「新教徒」。其它與名詞protest搭配的詞彙如下:
