Journal的意義很多，可以指每日發行的報紙，例如財經權威的「華爾街日報」英文名稱即為The Wall Street Journal；也可以指定期出刊的雜誌，包括學術學期刊，例如英國發行的《文化研究期刊》為Journal for Cultural Research；而且journal還可指私人撰寫的日誌，類似diary的涵義。Journal一字也與新聞有關，例如新聞從業人員是journalist，新聞文體是journalese，新聞學是journalism等。
