I have not watched Hollywood movies for a long time.  Last evening on Christmas Day after I "occupied" the TV on NBA games alone for four hours in my sons home, I yielded it to him and my wife . They then switched the program to movies channel and selected the subject movie.  

My wife said she had watched the movie while in Taipei and she wanted to watch it again, and my son said it was based on a true story. (Actually, it is not.)  That interested me to watch it with them. I must say thanks to the synchronized caption on screen that helped me finish watching the "black comedy " movie: a false kidnapping that resulted in seven deads. Then I surfed online to know the main female character, a pregnant policewoman, was played by Frances McDormand, which won her the first Academy Award for Best Actress of hers in 1996.  ( I was so ill-informed that it is the very first time that I have ever heard of her.)

The movie is not a horror film, not even a thriller.  I hereby recommend it to you. 

PS The Chinese title of the movie in Taiwan is "雪花高離奇命案", so funny.
