The four forms of birth 四生

   catur-yoni, the four forms of birth:

   (1)、胎 or 生 jara^yuja, viviparous, as with mammalia.

   (2)、卵生 an!d!aja, oviparous, as with birds.

   (3)、濕生 or 寒熱和合生 sam!svedaja, moisture, or water-born, as with worms and fishes.

   (4)、化生 aupapa^duka, metamorphic, as with moths from the chrysalis, or with devas, or in the hells, or the first beings in a newly evolved world.

   四生:胎生、卵生、濕生、化生。

   (一)胎生是在母胎內成體之後才出生的生命，如人類。

   (二)卵生是在卵殼內成體之後才出生的生命，如鳥類。

   (三)濕生是依靠濕氣而受形的生命；如蟲類。

   (四)化生是無所依托，只憑業力而忽然而生的生命，如諸天和地獄及劫初的人類。
