"Burn one’s bridges" means to eliminate all the possible ways of going back to original situation or retreats, mostly by rude ways, even immoral ones. One very common case, an employee quits his job and he sends email to the whole staff with so many grumbles, insulting statement as a loss canon. If once, he plans to come back to this office again that is not possible. We could summarize his move as "bridge burning".
