Seed plants are the most advanced plant group in the world, accounting for two-thirds of all plant species and shaping the predominant flora of our world. However, the Earth was very different over 300 million years ago during the Carboniferous period, when ferns were the dominant flora, with towering tree ferns dominating the ecological landscape. Most of the coal resources on Earth today came from fern plants of that period, hence the name “Carboniferous.” However, paleontological research reveals a turning point at the end of the Carboniferous period, with Earth’s climate suddenly becoming cold and arid. As a result, ferns began to decline, paving the way for the rise of seed plants. Nevertheless, this significant evolutionary event is marked by many unsolved mysteries, with one of the most important mysteries being: What specific advantages did seed plants evolve that allowed them to transition from a weaker position to a thriving one by the end of the Carboniferous period? Key Findings on Plant Root Structures Roots are essential organs for absorbing and transporting water and mineral nutrients in plants, and the endodermis is the core of the root, controlling water and mineral transport. The endodermis cell wall features a hydrophobic, lignin-based Casparian strip tightly anchored to the endodermal cell membrane, thus forming a barrier to prevent the free diffusion of substances. Additionally, the suberin lamellae are specialized cell wall structures that envelop the entire surface of endodermal cells. Research indicates that both the Casparian strip and suberin lamellae play essential roles in plant nutrient balance and water transport, but their functions are significantly different. Chao’s group had previously made breakthroughs in understanding the formation and anchoring of the Casparian strip. However, the evolutionary basis of suberin lamellae and their role in plant evolution had not yet been resolved. Evolutionary Insights into the Casparian Strip and Suberin Lamellae This study used a series of advanced cell biology and analytical chemistry techniques to conduct in-depth research on representative plant species from 18 different evolutionary nodes with the aim of unveiling the secrets of the origin of the Casparian strip and suberin lamellae. Surprisingly, the researchers found that the Casparian strip exists in all vascular plants, including ferns, lycophytes, gymnosperms, and angiosperms, while suberin lamellae are only present in gymnosperms and angiosperms (both collectively referred to as seed plants). This evidence suggests that the Casparian strip and suberin lamellae did not originate simultaneously; the former emerged from the common ancestor of all vascular plants, while the latter evolved in the common ancestor of seed plants. This finding challenges the longstanding assumption regarding suberin lamellae and offers new perspectives for studying the evolution of these structures. Gene Expansion and Suberin Lamellae in Seed Plants To investigate how suberin lamellae evolved in the common ancestor of seed plants, the researchers conducted molecular evolutionary analyses of the genes involved in suberin lamellae formation and their homologs, with these results: Although most of these genes had evolved before the appearance of vascular plants, significant expansion occurred in the common ancestor of seed plants. This expansion suggested that gene duplication likely led to functional innovations, thus enabling the genes responsible for synthesizing suberin lamellae to emerge in the common ancestor of seed plants. To confirm this hypothesis, the researchers investigated homologous genes of the core MYB transcription factors involved in suberin formation in fern plants, lycophytes, gymnosperms, and angiosperms. These genes were found to be widespread in all these plant groups. However, a significant expansion of homologous genes occurred in the common ancestor of gymnosperms and angiosperms. The researchers revealed that the expanded homologous genes in gymnosperms and angiosperms could initiate suberin lamellae formation, while the homologous genes in fern plants and lycophyte plants had no such function. This finding confirmed that the function of MYB transcription factors initiating suberin synthesis was acquired in seed plants through gene expansion. The Role of Suberin Lamellae in Plant Adaptation As Earth’s climate became dry in the late Carboniferous period, ferns began to decline and seed plants increased. Since suberin has waterproof properties, the researchers hypothesized that the emergence of suberin lamellae might have contributed to the drought adaptability of seed plants, thus promoting their rise after the onset of arid conditions. They later confirmed this hypothesis by using two Arabidopsis genetic materials with suberin defects, thereby demonstrating that suberin-deficient Arabidopsis was more sensitive to drought. Furthermore, Raman spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance revealed the crucial significance of suberin lamellae in enhancing the efficiency of vascular water transport. Specifically, since water molecules are capable of free diffusion across cell membranes in the absence of suberin lamellae, plants without suberin lamellae, such as ferns and horsetails, experience significant water leakage from endodermal cell membranes when subjected to osmotic stress, resulting in low transport efficiency. Seed plants, with suberin lamellae fully enveloping their endodermal cells, almost completely block the free diffusion of water molecules. Thus, their water leakage rate under osmotic stress is only 1%–2% compared to fern plants and lycophyte plants. This waterproofing effect greatly enhances the efficiency of water transport in the vascular tissues of seed plants under drought conditions, thereby increasing their drought resistance. Based on this, the researchers proposed a model for the rise of seed plants: In the moist climate of the Carboniferous period, fern plants with no suberin lamellae had higher water and nutrient absorption efficiency and were better adapted to the environment, thus causing them to thrive. However, during the late Carboniferous period, the onset of a dry climate provided an advantage for seed plants that had evolved suberin lamellae. They possessed a more efficient water transport system and stronger drought tolerance, allowing them to gradually replace ferns and become the dominant life forms on Earth’s surface. This study not only unveils the mystery of the origin of the Casparian strip and suberin lamellae but also provides evidence, for the first time, that the emergence of suberin lamellae drove the rise of seed plants, based on a new perspective. Furthermore, it identifies the important role of suberin lamellae in plant adaptation to adverse conditions such as drought. As a result, this study has significant implications for enhancing plant drought resistance, elucidating plant salt and drought tolerance mechanisms, and developing drought-resistant crop varieties. Leshyk/Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County Scientists have discovered that terrestrial ecosystems are more prone to collapse from significant animal life loss than marine ecosystems, with the impacts lasting longer on land. A new study published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B reveals that terrestrial ecosystems were more severely affected by the end-Triassic extinction than marine ecosystems. Furthermore, the recovery period for these terrestrial environments was longer compared to their marine counterparts, a finding that was unexpected. This discovery holds significant implications for the ongoing global extinction event, which is largely driven by human-induced climate change. “If you remove a significant component of critters from terrestrial ecosystems on land, those ecosystems fall apart and collapse much more easily than what happens in the oceans,” said Dr. Hank Woolley, co-author and NSF Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Dinosaur Institute. “And secondly, it takes longer for terrestrial ecosystems to recover from a mass extinction event than marine ecosystems.” Collaborative Research Efforts and Methodology This project — which was undertaken by Woolley and many other paleoecologists and geologists from NHM and beyond — is the first documented scientific study taking an in-depth look at the end-Triassic extinction event’s effects on both terrestrial and marine ecosystems. In addition to Woolley, NHM Dinosaur Institute PhD students Paul Byrne and Kiersten Formoso (the latter now a newly-minted Presidential Postdoctoral Fellow at Rutgers University), and Postdoc Dr. Becky Wu, co-authored the study with their USC colleagues. “This research endeavor also combined the expertise of a diverse array of paleobiology, paleoecology, and geobiology researchers at the University of Southern California and the Natural History Museum,” said Dr. Kiersten Formoso. “It’s exciting to get such an assemblage of authors across disciplines to join together to tackle interesting questions about the past and natural world.” Skeleton of the early dinosaur Coelophysis bauri from the Late Triassic. So while there are a lot of reconstructions of marine ecosystem change across mass extinctions, we have never been able to study terrestrial ecosystem change in the same way. We hope that this new terrestrial ecospace framework will open the door for future studies comparing how marine and terrestrial communities respond similarly or differently to rapid climate change events,” said co-author Dr. Alison Cribb, now 1851 Research Fellow at the University of Southampton. “As a research group that studies the paleobiology of life in the oceans and on land, with study systems ranging from billion-year-old stromatolites to dinosaurs, we thought that this would be a unique opportunity to bring our breadth of expertise together to tackle a fascinating and pressing topic—mass extinctions—in a new way,” said Woolley. While the earliest dinosaurs first appeared and spread more than 230 million years ago during the Triassic period, a catastrophic bout of CO2-fueled global warming led to the end-Triassic extinction event 201.5 million years ago, wiping out around 76% of all marine and terrestrial life. The effects of mass extinction events on marine environments have been well studied by creating ecospaces—3D representations that classify animals by how they feed and move and where they live—but the technique was never applied to terrestrial ecosystems. Until now, that is. Findings and Implications The new team of scientists compiled more than a thousand records from the Paleobiology Database to build the first terrestrial ecospace across the end-Triassic mass extinction. Next, they sorted each occurrence across the three axes to understand how well-represented different groups of animals were in terms of how they survived — eating insects while living mostly in the trees or scavenging for larger animals on the ground, for example. Henrik Woolley/Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County “Our findings reveal that in the wake of the end-Triassic mass extinction, land and sea recovered differently, with land ecosystems experiencing higher extinction severity and taking more time than the oceans to recover groups that filled certain ecological roles. This was because land ecosystems had fewer groups occupying these roles, in contrast with that of the oceans where many taxonomic groups may be doing the same or similar things,” said Formoso. Their findings could have a stark warning for our modern terrestrial ecosystems as we struggle with growing extinctions in the wake of human-caused climate change. For one thing, the end-Triassic extinction event involved volcanoes spewing out CO2. One of the other takeaways from the results is that no mass extinction event will have the same effects across different ecosystems. Life on land is markedly different—flowering plants are just one group that didn’t exist during the Triassic—but knowing those ecosystems might be even more vulnerable than previously thought should raise alarm bells. Broader Impacts and Future Directions “Understanding how life responded to climate change in the past is a major aim of paleontology and one that provides us insight and tools for addressing our modern biodiversity crisis. However, this requires detailed knowledge across a diverse set of organisms, ecosystems, and environments. One of the unique aspects of our collaborative paleontology program at NHM and USC is that it combines an un-motley crew of paleontologists with expertise spanning species, systems, and time – all of which make big-picture studies like this paper possible. As a result, our paleontological impact is greater than the sum of its paleontologists!” says Dr. Nathan Smith, Curator of the Dinosaur Institute at NHM, and Woolley’s PhD and Postdoc supervisor. The new framework developed for the study could also help scientists better understand mass extinctions across history. That could include our ongoing crisis and possibly inform more effective mitigation and conservation efforts. A new wasp species, Chrysonotomyia susbelli, has been discovered in Houston, Texas, becoming the 18th species identified by Rice University’s Scott Egan and his research team since 2014. This marks the fourth wasp species found on the university campus in the past seven years, shedding light on the hidden world of parasitoid wasps and the complex ecosystems that flourish in our immediate surroundings. The Chrysonotomyia susbelli is a parasitoid wasp, about 1 millimeter long, that emerges from galls, or tumorlike growths created by the gall wasp Neuroterus bussae found on southern live oak leaves. The galls serve as microhabitats within which larvae feed, develop and pupate. The research team’s study was published in the journal ZooKeys. Significance of the New Species “Chrysonotomyia susbelli represents the sixth species of its genus described from North America and the first globally known to parasitize cynipid gall wasps,” said Egan, an associate professor of ecology and evolutionary biology. The wasp was discovered and named by Brendan O’Loughlin, a Rice senior and the study’s first author. “The wasp’s goldenrod color is almost identical to the official colors of Wiess College, my residential college,” O’Loughlin said. The Chrysonotomyia susbelli is a parasitoid wasp, about 1 millimeter long. Credit: Rice University To confirm the uniqueness of the species, the research team conducted a genetic analysis and a detailed study of the wasp’s physical features under a microscope. Its investigation also included a review of the historical literature to ensure that the species had not been previously described. This research was complemented by DNA barcode data and observations of the wasp’s natural history, including host associations and a unique leaf-scanning behavior exhibited by female wasps. The researchers also modified the identification key of New World members, groups of species found exclusively in the Americas, to incorporate this new species. Importance of Local Biodiversity Egan emphasized the importance of studying local biodiversity. “You don’t have to travel to a distant rainforest to find new and beautiful things — you just have to step outside and look,” he said. The discovery hints at a previously unexplored ecological niche involving Chrysonotomyia parasitoids, cynipid gall wasps, and oaks, suggesting that there may be many more undiscovered species within this system. “Generations of Chrysonotomyia susbelli have likely lived unnoticed on the oaks of Rice University since its founding,” Egan said.
