明朝開國皇帝朱元璋一生傳奇，在成就帝王之路的過程中，他做過乞丐、和尚，也流傳許多奇聞軼事，歷史老師陳啟鵬指出，朱元璋在當和尚的時期，充滿了神秘色彩，因為他後來寫的碑文裡，詳細了記載他的過去、家世，以及起義後的諸多事跡，唯獨當和尚雲遊的這一段時間，朱元璋是含糊帶過，「沒有人知道他在幹什麼」，此舉引發外界猜測，當時的朱元璋做了許多為非作歹之事，藏了許多「黑歷史」。

陳啟鵬在《關鍵時刻》網路版講述朱元璋的歷史，談到朱元璋在當和尚的7、8年間，明明是重要的養成時間，「他的武藝，還有他的兵法，很可能就是在這一段時間學到的」，卻始終避而不談，感覺就有很多不可告人的秘密，後來歷史學家針對此點整理出，朱元璋有7個非常忌諱的字，分別是光、亮、禿、僧、賊、寇、則，前幾個字是和和尚身分有關，後面則是因為紅巾軍早期被視為盜賊。

究竟為何朱元璋這麼忌諱和尚身分？陳啟鵬以自己的觀點給出結論，「朱元璋在那一段時間，很有可能有做一些偷雞摸狗、見不得光的為非作歹事情，而且他到處雲遊，有可能是這邊做做換那邊，那邊做做換這邊，所以就到處跑來跑去，為非作歹就是了，他沒辦法打這一段偷雞摸狗、偷矇拐騙的伎倆告訴人家，因為只要一講說我在哪裡到哪裡之後，人家就可以查得出來，你說這些見不得光的事情，怎麼能夠告訴大家呢」。

另外，陳啟鵬也用朱元璋「真面目之謎」來做舉證，認為朱元璋當年在當和尚的時候，可能有為非作歹的行為，「所以後來他奇特的長相，有被人家記下來，甚至還畫成畫像來緝拿犯人」，於是當朱元璋成為皇帝之後，特別忌諱有人提到這個過去，「所以他很可能在無意之中，被人家認出來，但是他只要發現自己一被認出來，就隨便找個藉口，把那個認出來的人砍了」。
