Philippines calls joint US drills defense rehearsal as China tensions simmer.

The annual military drills between the Philippines and the US will start on Monday as part of the two allies commitment to peace, security and stability in the Indo-Pacific.

Col. Xerxes Trinidad, chief of the Armed Forces of the Philippines Public Affairs Office, said the Balikatant (shoulder-to-shoulder) 2025 marked an "expanded regional security and cooperation between long-time allies" and will be participated in by about 9,000 American and 5,000 Filipino soldiers who will do live fire and real time maneuvers for 18 days..

Brig. Gen. Michael Logico, Balikatan Exercise director, described the upcoming military drill as "an air and integrated and missile defense exercise."

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. reportedly signified interest to attend one of the events in a still unknown location.

"Yes. We briefed President Marcos two weeks ago, yes and he has given us the green light for the entire exercise, all of the events. And yes, he is very interested in watching one of the events," Logico said during a press conference in Camp Aguinaldo on Tuesday.

The AFP will be using FA-50s fighter jets and 155-mm artillery and other newly-acquired assets from the modernization program in the exercise.

As for the US Armed Forces, Col. Doug Krugman, staff officer of 1st marine expeditionary force, one of senior exercise planners for Balikatan 25, said the USAF would be fielding F-16s alongside Marine Corps F-18 fighters which is currently participating in Cope Thunder and MV-22 Ospreys.

Col. Trinidad said Balikatan 2025 underscored the ironclad alliance between the Philippines and the United States, reaffirming mutual defense commitments under the 1951 Mutual Defense Treaty.

This years Balikatan will feature full-scale joint training designed to test interoperability and enhance operational readiness in diverse scenarios.

These include Multilateral Maritime Event (MME), involving the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) for the first time; Command and Control Exercise (C2X); Combined Joint All-Domain Operations (CJADO), including Integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD), Maritime Strike (MARSTRIKE), and Counter Landing Live Fire Exercises (CLLF).

Nineteen countries have been invited to observe Balikatan 2025, including Canada, Germany, and the United Kingdom, who have confirmed participation. The International Observer Program enhances transparency and cooperation with allies and partners, strengthening regional solidarity..

.The joint training also supports the AFPs Comprehensive Archipelagic Defense Concept (CADC), helping modernize capabilities to meet emerging threats including cyber, maritime, and disaster response scenarios. Balikatan benefits host communities through infrastructure projects, healthcare services, and economic stimulation via local procurement and temporary employment.

Balikatan 2025 stands as a powerful demonstration of international cooperation, military interoperability, and a shared vision for a free, open, and secure the Indo-Pacific region.
