Fifty-five Chinese sailors are feared dead after their nuclear submarine apparently got caught in a trap intended to ensnare British sub-surface vessels in the Yellow Sea.
According to a secret UK report the seamen died following a catastrophic failure of the submarines oxygen systems which poisoned the crew.
The captain of the Chinese PLA Navy submarine 093-417 is understood to be among the deceased, as were 21 other officers.

The UK report into the fatal mission reads: Intelligence reports that on 21st of August/2023. there was an onboard accident whilst carrying out a mission in the Yellow Sea.Incident happened at 08.12 local resulting in the death of 55 crew members: 22 officers, 7 officer cadets, 9 petty officers, 17 sailors. Dead include the captain Colonel Xue Yong-Peng.
Our understanding is death caused by hypoxia due to a system fault on the submarine. The submarine hit a chain and anchor obstacle used by the Chinese Navy to trap US and allied submarines.
This resulted in systems failures that took six hours to repair and surface the vessel. The onboard oxygen system poisoned the crew after a catastrophic failure.
As yet there is no independent confirmation of the suspected loss of the Chinese submarine in the public domain.
Beijing has dismissed open source speculation about the incident as completely false while Taiwan has also denied internet reports.
Mail Plus approached the Royal Navy to discuss the details contained in the UK report but official sources declined to comment or offer guidance.
The UK report, which is based on defence intelligence, is held at a high classification.
A British submariner offered this explanation: It is plausible that this occurred and I doubt the Chinese would have asked for international support for obvious reasons.
If they were trapped on the net system and the submarines batteries were running flat (plausible) then eventually the air purifiers and air treatment systems could have failed.
Which would have reverted to secondary systems and subsequently and plausibly failed to maintain the air. Which led to asphyxia or poisoning.
We have kit which absorbs co2 and generates oxygen in such a situation. It is probable that other nations do not have this kind of tech.

The Chinese Type 093 submarines entered service in the last 15 years. The vessels are 351ft-long and are armed with torpedoes.
The Type 093s are among Chinas more modern submarines and are known for their lower noise levels.
The sinking is understood to have taken place in waters off Chinas Shandong Province.

.In a concerning incident, a Chinese Navy (PLAN) nuclear-powered Type-093 Shang Class submarine encountered a significant mishap near the Taiwan Strait. This report comes from a well-regarded expert specializing in surface and sub-surface vessels, who shared the information through his Twitter account (X).
“This is currently “unconfirmed”, treat with great caution. Been hearing it for a few hours. Should add, that one thing which makes me doubt some of the accounts is that they have too much information, like crew dying, type of boat etc. However, that doesn’t invalidate the underlying story. But waiting for more info, ideally credible sources (I may have missed some) he noted further. Further reports claim all crew died”.
However, China has not issued an official statement regarding the incident at this time.
The Ministry of National Defence (MND) has refuted claims of a Chinese submarine crash in the Taiwan Strait, asserting that there is no supporting evidence for the circulating rumor. The speculation has gained traction online, suggesting that a Chinese People’s Liberation Army Type 093 (Shang class) nuclear-powered attack submarine crashed in the Taiwan Strait, resulting in the loss of all crew members.
During a routine press conference in Taipei, MND spokesman Sun Li-fang communicated that no indicators of a submarine crash have been detected by the nations joint intelligence and surveillance apparatus. Notably, the rumor remains confined to social media platforms, with no authoritative sources confirming the alleged incident. Sun declined further comment on the matter.
Chinas naval fleet currently operates six Shang-class submarines. Earlier assessments from Chinese sources in the early 2000s had positioned the Type 093s noise levels on par with American-improved Los Angeles-class submarines and Russian Akula-class submarines.
In 2009, the USN ONI reported the Type 093 to be louder than the Victor III class, which had been in service since 1979. The classification extended to Type 093A or Shang I for the initial two submarines in service, followed by a design modification for an additional four submarines, potentially featuring increased length and a rear hump. This modified version is referred to as Shang II or Type 093B, with a crew complement of 100 individuals.
In a separate development, the United States military disclosed a video in June 2023, depicting what it termed an "unsafe" maneuver executed by a Chinese naval vessel in the Taiwan Strait over the weekend. This involved a Chinese navy ship sharply altering its course across the trajectory of an American destroyer, compelling the US vessel to decelerate to avert a collision.
The incident took place as the USS Chung-Hoon, an American destroyer, and the Canadian frigate HMCS Montreal conducted a "freedom of navigation" transit through the strait, highlighting their contention that the waters are international, despite Chinas territorial claims over Taiwan and the passage.

In August 2023, unconfirmed reports swirled about a Chinese nuclear-powered submarine meeting a serious mishap while transiting the Taiwan Strait, and all hands were reportedly lost.
China’s Defense Ministry remained tight-lipped about it, but its defense minister Li Shangfu has become conspicuous by his absence from the public eye for two weeks now.
Experts observing China’s history do not find it unlikely that Beijing would try to keep the accident under wraps.
The US government believes that China’s Defense Minister is under investigation and has been stripped of his responsibilities as defense minister. The unexplained disappearance of the defense minister indicates brewing turmoil in the upper ranks of China’s ruling Communist Party.
It is still unknown if there is a correlation between the reported submarine mishap and the investigation against the Defense Minister.
There has been a change in the stance of the Taiwan Ministry of National Defense. Last month, the Taiwan MND said there was “no information to confirm” about the submarine mishap.
But this week, it responded that “this matter concerns sensitivity. It’s not for us to comment.” However, contrary to initial reports that suggested the accident happened in the narrow Taiwan Strait, the reports now indicate the disaster occurred in the Yellow Sea.
Major General Huang Wenqi, assistant deputy director of the Intelligence Office of the General Staff Headquarters of Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense, said he would not comment on this as the relevant information is “absolutely confidential.” He added that “it is not convenient to disclose because of the sensitivity involved.”
The reports of the mishap concerning the Type 093 or Shang Class nuclear submarines, one of the most potent submarines in the PLA-Navy’s fleet, started on August 21. Some reports suggested that the entire crew of 100 onboard the vessel perished. China did not substantiate any of the reports. China has six Shang-class nuclear-powered submarines.The Shang class is a family of Chinese second-generation nuclear-powered attack submarines (SSNs). The Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLA) has six of these submarine types in service that make up the backbone of its submarine fleets. The more advanced Chinese subs like the Type 093A and Type 093B SSNs are upgraded versions of the Type 093.
The reports of the submarine crash surfaced just days after Beijing launched large-scale military drills around Taiwan amidst months of heightened tension between China, Taiwan, and the US.
The experts the EurAsian Times spoke to said that knowing Beijing’s penchant for projecting strength, it will try to hide the incident. They added that incidents like these have a way of coming to the surface.
“The answer is it can hide but for how long – many Chinese disasters will give you a clue of how news is disseminated in a delayed manner,” the former commander-in-chief of both the Eastern and Western Naval Command Vice Admiral AB Singh told the EurAsian Times.
Another Indian Navy official said, requesting anonymity, that people would do good to remember how China initially tried to hide the Galwan clash despite numerous casualties on both sides.
China revealed the casualties of its soldiers in 2021, almost a year after the Galwan clash between Indian and Chinese troops along the Himalayan border. Besides this, the cover-up of the onset of the pandemic has shaken the world’s trust in China.
The official added: “But incidents like these cannot be hidden for long, especially if there have been casualties. This information of sinking (if it did) would probably already be available to intelligence agencies. Maybe it is a matter of time when it comes into the public domain.”
It has been proving difficult to ascertain the truth of the matter as there is a possibility that the submarine was submerged when the tragedy struck. It eluded the numerous satellites in the sky.
“If the submarine was submerged when it sank, then yes (it would evade satellites). But there are so many other ways through which a submarine’s absence would be felt. And if the mishap has happened in Taiwan strait, its depth is shallow and, in most parts divers, can also go down and investigate if the area is known,” the official added.
Among the signs that will lead to unraveling the mystery of a sunken submarine (if it happened) is the absence of crews and their families missing them. “Submarine not returning to base port, the number of submarines present there. These can be discerned by satellites,” the Indian Navy official concluded.

For at least a month rumors have been circulating in social nets, claiming the deaths of the entire crew of Chinese Peoples Liberation Army Navy.nuclear submarine 093-417 in Yellow sea, sometime in late August. Seems like rumors are confirmed, and all but one 56 crew have died. Submarine got caught in an underwater trap aimed at US and allies submarines, made of cables and chains. 093-417 got entangled in this trap, and sent a diver to assist submarine release. When he completed the task and returned, he was met with dead silence. It is with great efforts that the Navy ships managed to surface submarine, with 55 dead crew, including Skipper and 22 officers.
According to Chinese sources, death was caused by air system’s oxygen sulfide poisoning, while submarine, astonishingly, wasn’t equipped with proper gas detectors.
.Diver surfaced and was rescued, he is reportedly, in a deep depression. Beijing dnied this accident and related rumors, but recent top brass resigns, arrests and shuffles are attributed, partially, to 093-417 disaster.
