China was selected by the Indonesian Government over Japan to build the fast-train rail link, which is estimated to cost $6.07bn.

The project is being developed by PT Kereta Cepat Indonesia China, a joint venture formed in October 2015 between a consortium of Indonesian state-owned companies, and China Railway International, a subsidiary of China Railway Group (CREC). The project is being carried out on a business-to-business basis, with Indonesia having a 60% interest in the joint venture while China has 40%.

The Indonesian high-speed rail project (IHSR, Kereta Cepat) is a high-speed rail route completely connecting two of Indonesias largest cities, Jakarta and Bandung. Operated by the KCIC consortium, the IHSR is the first high-speed railway in ASEAN, covering a distance of 142.3 kilometres (88.4 mi) with a top speed of 350 kilometres per hour (220 mph). It is also the first high-speed rail in the Southern Hemisphere and South East Asia.

The projects total cost is $7.3 billion USD. The rolling stock for the IHSR has been stated to be the KCIC400AF Fuxing EMU trainsets. The first trainset arrived in Indonesia mid-2022 and was tested on 16 November 2022, during the G20 Bali summit. The Jakarta-Bandung HSR line performed further trial runs in May 2023, during an ASEAN Summit,[ and was initially scheduled to begin general operation in August 2023, coinciding with Indonesias independence day celebrations.[

In early August 2023 the projects opening was delayed to late September, with officials citing a need to ensure passenger safety as the primary cause. The Jakarta-Bandung High Speed Rail in opened Thursday on September 7, 2023.
