St. Petersburg spring.Spring comes to St. Petersburg at the very end of March, and can be one of the best times of year for sightseeing and culture, before the tourist rush of the summer. The city comes alive fast after the long winter and, despite the residual cold, the inhabitants tend to be in celebratory mood. The sight of the ice from Lake Ladoga flowing down the citys waterways out into the Gulf of Finland is quite spectacular.

On the culture front, the Musical Spring in St. Petersburg festival, which runs for almost a month in late April and May under the auspices of the Composers Union, is a more eclectic affair than the more famous Stars of the White Nights Festival the month after, but always has plenty treats for music aficionados. The SKIF festival, normally in late April, which draws together an incredibly diverse mixture of dance, electronica, experimental and world music, is not everybodys cup of tea, but always has a uniquely shambolic appeal. From fashion and ballet to fountains, this is how to enjoy St Petersburg as the snow starts to thaw.As the winter snow melts and temperatures finally rise above freezing, St Petersburg emerges with newfound energy and optimism each spring. Residents surface from their seasonal hibernations and outdoor venues take down their shutters, casting a celebratory air over the city. Festivals and cultural events take place almost every week, featuring everything from St Petersburg Fashion Week and the International Ballet Festival to the highly anticipated Festival of Fountains. If you’re visiting the city this season, get in on the action with our guide to the best spring events in St Petersburg.

Peterhof is a palace and park complex located on the southern shore of the Gulf of Finland. The fountain “Samson tearing the lion’s mouth” is the central element of the cascade.
It is believed that the figure of Samson appeared in connection with the Poltava victory of Russian troops over the Swedes in 1709.
