China turns nuclear submarine into a museum allowing tourists a glimpse into Beijings mighty military power

  • China has joined four other countries in retaining a nuclear submarine after it has been decommissioned
  • From April 25, tourists at Qingdao Navy Museum have been able to explore the submarines interior
  • The sub is a Type 091 which was based on technology from the 1950s and 1960s

A museum in China has put the countrys first ever nuclear-powered submarine on display in celebration of the 68th anniversary of the Peoples Liberation Army Navy. 

There are only four other countries that have retained a nuclear powered submarine after it has been decommissioned. 

As of April 25, tourists have been able to explore the submarine and get first hand experience on what its like onboard. 

 The decommissioned Type 091 nuclear submarine Long March 1 is on display at the Chinese Navy Museum in Qingdao City, east Chinas Shandong province. The new attraction at the museum opened on April 25.2017.

09I型核潛艦(北約代號:「漢級」,英文Han-class)是中華人民共和國研製的第一種核潛艦,1970年起陸續建成服役,共建造5艘,部署在中國人民解放軍海軍北海艦隊。目前該型艇仍有三艘在役。中國海軍在蘇聯及美國的技術封鎖之下自行研究發展終於建造成功屬於中國人的核子動力潛艦,

 第一艘09I型核潛艦(長征1號,舷號401)於1966年開始總體設計,並建造了一個1:1的實體模型。1968年5月開始放樣,11月開始總體建造並於1970年4月完成了首艇的總體試水1971年8月23日7時40分,091型首艇1701(當時舷號,後改為401)從應急推進電機轉換為核動力航行狀態.該型艇的前兩艘(401、402艇)於1980年代末接受了升級改裝,並於2000-2001年退役

1974年8月1日建軍節,長征1號正式入役[]。1977年到1990年間又陸續建造了4艘09I型核潛艦,分別命名為長征2號-長征5號,舷號402-405。所有的09I型核潛艦都部署在北海艦隊,以青島為母港。

 2016年10月15日,中國首艘該型潛艦舷號401艦名長征一號退出現役後,經過徹底的去核化處理,現已進駐青島的中國海軍博物館碼頭,標誌著中國核潛艇從研製生產、使用管理到退役處置形成全壽命保障能力。

The Type 091 has operated mainly in local waters, and has appeared in incidents. One submarine shadowed a U.S. carrier battle group in the mid-1990s. Another entered Japanese territorial waters through the Ishigaki, Okinawa island group near Taiwan in November 2004, causing Japans maritime forces to go on alert for the second time since the Second World War; China apologized for the trespass and blamed "technical reasons" on the submarine.[12]

The boats have received major upgrades and numerous refits since commissioning. They have six 533 mm (21 in) torpedo tubes and carry 20 torpedoes. Alternatively, they can carry 36 mines in their tubes. It is capable of firing sub-launched variants of the C-801 anti-ship missile as well as a range of indigenous and Russian torpedoes or mines. All remaining hulls have been refitted with new sonars, with Type H/SQ2-262B sonar manufactured by No. 613 Factory replacing the original Type 603 sonar on board. Anechoic tiles were added later to reduce noise levels.
