The new aircraft carrier, named after Shandong Province in east China, was delivered to the Peoples Liberation Army (PLA) Navy and placed in active service Tuesday at the naval port.

Chinas first domestically-built aircraft carrier, the Shandong, was delivered to the Peoples Liberation Army (PLA) Navy and put in service on Tuesday, said Cheng Dewei, spokesperson for the Peoples Liberation Army (PLA) Navy on Wednesday.
Cheng said that the type 002 class vessel was named after Chinas eastern province of Shandong according to the navys rules for naming ships, and after taking consideration of the willingness of provinces and municipalities.
Speaking of the technical performance of the Shandong compared with the Liaoning, Chinas first aircraft carrier, Cheng said this new aircraft carrier was wholly designed and built by China, focusing on several problems including the overall design of aircraft carrier, construction of the hull, thus improving the effectiveness of comprehensive operational and comprehensive security level.

美國海軍分析,中國自行籌劃建設航空母艦事項長達20餘年的準備,在亞太地區實屬難能可貴,其實力逐漸形成,相較於美國太平洋第七艦隊的航空母艦戰鬥群而言,中國海軍的航空母艦只不過是幼稚園的水準不,過中國海軍CVN21.第一艘核子動力航空母艦,可能已超越美國海軍福特級核子動力航空母艦,其電磁彈射系統與激光武器,雷達及反潛系統均已超越美國海軍不容小覷.根據軍事情報指出,目前在中國上海江南造船廠建造中的CV19.航空母艦,8.5萬噸排水量,就已採用電磁彈射系統,預期2022年服役,其CVN21.10-12萬噸排水量,核子動力航空母艦,一般咸信已經在大連造船廠秘密開工建造中,預期2025年服役?

Chinas second aircraft carrier was commissioned into the Peoples Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) on 17 December in a ceremony held at the Sanya-Yulin naval base on Hainan Island, and was given the name Shandong with pennant number 17.
The ceremony was attended by Chinese President Xi Jinping, who presented the PLA flag and naming certificate to the ships captain and political commissar, reflecting the significance with which the entry into service of Chinas first wholly domestically built aircraft carrier is viewed.
The carriers base-port of Sanya-Yulin is on the northern shores of the South China Sea, which gives a pointer to where the carrier is likely to operate in the immediate future. Although it will be geographically co-located with the naval forces of the Southern Theatre Command (South Sea Fleet), the carrier may be under direct command of the Central Military Commission because of its perceived strategic value.
Shandong was built by Dalian Shipbuilding International Corporation (DSIC) and was launched on 26 April 2017. It commenced sea trials in May 2018 and has completed a total of nine periods at sea. The final trials phase included a transit from Dalian to Hainan, during which it passed through the politically sensitive Taiwan Strait.

美國智庫國際評估暨戰略中心（International Assessment and Strategy Center）軍事專家（Richard Fisher）還預測，中國最終會擁有15艘航空母艦，甚至更多。中共總書記習近平在山東艦服役儀式上，強調了中國策略性的軍事投送能力和野心。而舉行儀式的海南軍事基地，將進一步支持中國在全球的軍事投送，進入印度洋、波斯灣和地中海區域。
美國邁阿密大學政治系教授（June Dreyer）則指出，毫無疑問地，中國在藉此宣揚自己在這一區域的實力，將讓鄰國非常擔憂。
中國正藉由建造航空母艦挑戰美國的全球地位，但為何中國想在航空母艦上向美國看齊？
以色列軍事預算很高，是因為周圍有敵人。但中國並沒有很危險的鄰居，也沒人打算入侵中國，沒有必要大肆發展軍力。結論是，中國想要挑戰美國在全球的地位，但華盛頓並不買帳。

The Shandong, which uses conventional rather than nuclear propulsion, is the second carrier in the Chinese fleet. red square 123 於 2019/12/18 16:00回覆未來10年間，中國的航空母艦規模可發展到與美國並駕齊驅，但中國不會滿足，他們希望能超越美國。同時，到2025年左右，中國將製造出核動力航空母艦，最遲2030年還可開發出無人艦載機，執行多樣化作戰任務。
美國會部署成百上千的反艦彈道飛彈，甚至可能將這種飛彈出售給台灣等其他國家。到2025年前，美國和盟友會處在更有利的位置，遏制中國在亞洲的擴張。
