The Complete Poetry of Du Fu presents a complete scholarly translation of Chinese literature alongside the original text in a critical edition. The English translation is more scholarly than vernacular Chinese translations, and it is compelled to address problems that even the best traditional commentaries overlook.
The main body of the text is a facing page translation and critical edition of the earliest Song editions and other sources. For convenience the translations are arranged following the sequence in Qiu Zhao’an’s Du shi xiangzhu (although Qiu’s text is not followed). Basic footnotes are included when the translation needs clarification or supplement. Endnotes provide sources, textual notes, and a limited discussion of problem passages. A supplement references commonly used allusions, their sources, and where they can be found in the translation.
Scholars know that there is scarcely a Du Fu poem whose interpretation is uncontested. The scholar may use this as a baseline to agree or disagree. Other readers can feel confident that this is a credible reading of the text within the tradition. A reader with a basic understanding of the language of Chinese poetry can use this to facilitate reading Du Fu, which can present problems for even the most learned reader.

杜甫（712年2月12日－770年），字子美，號少陵野老，一號杜陵野客、杜陵布衣，唐朝現實主義詩人，其著作以弘大的社會寫實著稱。杜甫家族出於京兆杜氏的分支，唐朝時京兆杜氏都多自稱為杜陵人，所以杜甫晚號杜陵。因其曾任左拾遺、檢校工部員外郎，因此後世稱其杜拾遺、杜工部；又稱杜少陵、杜草堂（曾隱居於成都杜甫草堂）。

杜甫與李白並稱「李杜，為了與晚唐的兩位詩人李商隱與杜牧即「小李杜」區別，又稱作「大李杜」，明清以後也常被尊稱為「老杜」。雖然在世時名聲並不顯赫，但在身後，杜甫的作品最終對中國古典文學和日本近世文學產生了深遠的影響^[]。約1500首詩歌被保留了下來，作品集為《杜工部集》^]。他在中國古典詩歌中以風格渾樸沉鬱著稱。相對李白疏朗灑脫的「詩仙」，杜甫被後人奉為「詩聖」。他的詩也因其社會時代意義被譽為「^[

 

 

This six volume work is the first complete translation of the poetry of Du Fu, the greatest poet in the Chinese tradition. The entirety of Du Fu’s works provides a more nuanced portrait of the author than the standard selections. It gives testimony to the great rebellion of 755, but also poems on building a chicken coop and repairing bamboo plumbing. In the whole we discover how the sublime and quotidian are united in a larger vision of life.

宇文所安對中國古典詩歌情有獨鍾，其中特別推崇唐詩及「詩聖」杜甫。「每次找尋研究主題，都能獲得與杜甫詩作相互呼應的題材，我就是喜歡杜甫，原因就是這麼簡單。」宇文所安提到，翻譯工作並不容易，文學翻譯工作做得好，關鍵在於能否忠於原著，而杜甫詩作顯示對唐代社會面的寫實觀察，「他的作品是非常嚴肅的，同時穿插典雅與通俗的文學元素，一定要能確切掌握，才能傳達其作品風格。」

撇開他對杜甫的喜愛不提，翻譯杜甫的作品確實讓他吃了不少苦頭。宇文所安解釋，唐詩沒有時態，也很少使用代名詞，幾乎沒有可以拿來分辨單數或複數的方法。比方「鳥飛空」，究竟是「一隻鳥在天上飛」，還是「一群鳥在天上飛」呢？

As Shakespeare is to literature in English, so is the poet Du Fu to the Chinese literary tradition. He wrote in the eighth century, during the Tang dynasty, and his work is accessible to modern Chinese readers in a way that English literature of that period—think Beowulf—is not available to readers of modern English. Du Fu, in fact, is still widely quoted in China today, and his influence on Chinese poetry during the past 1,200 years is inescapable. But the poet’s complete works have heretofore been unavailable in English translation.

Stephen Owen is an American sinologist specializing in Chinese literature, particularly Tang dynasty poetry and comparative poetics. He teaches Chinese literature and comparative literature at Harvard University and is James Bryant Conant University Professor, one of only 26 University Professorships. He is a member of American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a member of American Philosophical Society.

Owen graduated from Yale University in 1968 in Chinese Language and Literature, then continued on at Yale as a graduate student, receiving a Ph.D. in 1972 under Hans Fränkel. He taught at Yale from 1972 to 1982, when he went to Harvard. He has been a Fulbright Scholar and held a Guggenheim Fellowship,^[1] among many other awards and honors.^[2] He was awarded Andrew Mellon Foundations Distinguished Achievements Award. He received the prestigious Tang Prize Award for Sinology in 2018.
