第五代戰鬥機在科技上與前一代最大的差異就是低可偵測性技術的運用。這一項科技研發在1970年代美國採用俄國的研究論文，配合電腦的高速計算能力，逐漸將降低雷達截面積（RCS）的估算成功的與飛機設計融合。
Aircraft classified as fifth generation jet fighters are those in service approximately from 2005 onward, until the succeeding generation of fighters enter service. These aircraft are notable mostly for employing advanced integrated avionics systems, and feature other new technologies such as stealth technology, supercruise, thrust vectoring, advances in sensors, and VTOL.
The advanced integrated avionics systems reduces the workload for pilots. This combined with advances in sensors allows them to observe the battle space more effectively (increasing situation awareness). Stealth technology reduces aircraft visibility to enemies.
Currently the only developed fifth generation jet fighters are the F-22 Raptor and the F-35 Lightning II according to sources.
