學英文最重要就是溝通，而且是順暢溝通，就算不能溝通，也要能做日常生活上「吃喝拉撒睡」的表達。可惜國人學英文首重考試，不然就是把應付考試亂K的怪英文，拿到日常生活中，甚至職場上使用，鬧國際笑話是必然的。

什麼叫應付考試的怪英文呢？多半是坊間口耳相傳的土法煉鋼英文用法，來源出處不明，但據說都是「英語大屍」們認證過的，讓人嘖嘖稱奇。說到鬧笑話，最大的笑話就是「我想上廁所」（「拉」跟「撒」）的講法。

有「大屍」說，要講「I'm calling for nature.」比較委婉，還真的有很多人深信不疑，此適足以說明為何台灣是詐騙集團的天堂。

其實 call for nature 根本不知所云，正確講法是 answer the call of nature，即「回應大自然呼喚」之意，相當於中文把「上廁所」講成較為文雅的「如廁」，而且只能做描述之用，不能當下用來表示「我想上洗手間」，可參考以下 Oxford 和 Merriam-Webster 例句：

I did a quick escape at the end to answer a pressing call of nature.

（我最後終於得以迅速脫身如廁解決內急。）

He had to leave suddenly to answer/obey the call of nature.

（他必須臨時告離如廁。）

從上述例句中不難看出，answer/obey the call of nature 是描述過去發生的事件經過，不能做為當下想上廁所時的用語。

《紐約時報》某篇文章中的一個句子講得更清楚，當提到紐約警方對隨地便溺者取締不力時，很多民眾反問「哪裡可以上廁所？」（Where does one answer the call of nature?），可見 answer the call of nature 不是要去上廁所時講的話，而是用來指「上廁所」，不能用中文思維胡亂套招。

也有「大屍」說，應該要講「I need to relieve myself.」，更是讓人啼笑皆非。

如同 answer the call of nature，relieve oneself 也是用來描述「如廁」（通常是指「小號」），而不是「想上廁所」時的口語表達方式。此外，「I need to relieve myself.」的講法，就好像想上廁所時，跟周遭在場的人說「我必須如廁」一樣奇怪。

以下 Ｍerriam-Webster 和 Oxford 例句，明確說明 relieve oneself 是用來描述「上廁所」，並非想上廁所當下用來告知旁人之用： 

The puppy relieved himself on the carpet.

（狗狗在地毯上尿尿。）

I drank liters of water and then had to relieve myself - a new problem.

（我喝了好幾公升水，然後就想上廁所 — 另一個新麻煩。）

言歸正傳，社交場合想上廁所時應該要講「Excuse me, I'll be right back.」，字面意思雖然是「暫離速回」，其實就是中文的「我去洗個手」的意思。answer the call of nature、relieve oneself 和 「Excuse me, I'll be right back.」三者之間的差異，可從以下句子明顯看出：

Feeling the urge to answer the call of nature, I said to my clients, "Excuse me, I'll be right back." Then I walked into the men's room to relieve myself.

（因為感到內急，我便對客戶說：「不好意思，暫離一下」，然後步入男廁小解。）

句中「引號」的部分（Excuse me, I'll be right back.）才是想上廁所當下應該講的話。

若將「引號」部分的「直接引句」(direct speech) 改成「間接引句」(indirect speech)，寫法如下：

Feeling the urge to answer the call of nature, I asked to be excused from my clients and walked into the men's room to relieve myslef. 

附帶一提，「想上廁所」比較有名的委婉用法是 bathroom break，話說美國前總統小布希 (George W. Bush) 2005 年出席聯合國大會時想上廁所，寫紙條給身旁的國務卿萊斯女士 (Condoleezza Rice) 求助，結果紙條內容被路透社攝影記者拍個正著：

I think I may need a bathroom break. Is this possible?

因此，「I need to relieve myself.」如果改成「I think I may need a bathroom break.」，聽起來應該不至於那麼怪。

非正式場合，想上廁所的表達方式五花八門，Mike老師常用的就有：

I gotta take a leak.

（我想上小號。）

I gotta take a dump.

（我想撇條。）

不過使用上要看場合和對象，拿捏不準會很尷尬，同學們參考就好。
