The purpose of education is to cultivate moral traits.

(1) 無 target of something 用法。「‥‥‥的宗旨」應為 the purpose of something，因此，「教育的宗旨」就是 the purpose of education。 

(2) the purpose of something is to do something 為固定句型，「主詞補語」（在此為「同位語」）是「不定詞片語」型態（to foster something），不是「動名詞片語」型態（fostering something）。

(3) moral trait （道德特質）即「善」（virtue）的人格特質，如「誠實」（honesty）、「勇敢」（bravery）等，是指透過思想表現在行為上的特性，無法「陶冶」（foster），但可以「培養」（cultivate）。如果要表示「陶冶品德」，應該是 foster moral development；如果要指「培養德行」，則是 cultivate moral traits。foster 側重養成過程，cultivate 著眼養成目標。 

(4) a moral trait 是指「一項道德特質」，邏輯上教育不可能只為培養一項道德特質，應該以複數型態 to cultivate moral traits 表示。to foster moral development 的 development 為「不可數名詞」，故無複數型態，也不須「不定冠詞」a。
