Question Regarding Nexiq Adapter for My '99 and '01 Dodge/Cummins
I use a Cat Detroit Volvo laptop for work and a Cummins for my truck. The Nexiq data connection works great for all my needs.
I recently bought the nexiq 3 usb link connector specifically for my Dodge/Cummins. The '99 harness has a triangular 3-pin connector, and the '01 harness has a 3-pin connector near the ECM. However, the Nexiq adapter only has a 3-pin triangle plug, not the other 3-pin type.
Issue Encountered
Yesterday, I tried to connect to the ECM on the '99 Dodge, but it didn’t work. Instead, it triggered a Check Engine Light communication code error. I managed to clear this code using a different device.
Additionally, I have '99 datalinks with Quadzilla connected, but the 3-pin triangle plug only has 2 wires.
Troubleshooting Steps and Questions
1. Connector Compatibility:
- Verify that the Nexiq 3 USB connector is compatible with both the '99 and '01 Dodge/Cummins models.
- Check if there is an adapter or different configuration needed for the standard 3-pin connector on the '01.
2. Wiring Issues:
- Ensure that the 3-pin triangle plug with only 2 wires is correctly aligned and connected.
- Inspect the wiring for any damages or loose connections that could interfere with communication.
3. Device Configuration:
- Confirm that the Nexiq device is properly configured for the specific ECMs on both vehicles.
- Ensure that any necessary software or firmware updates are applied to the Nexiq 3 USB connector.
4. Datalink Compatibility:
- Verify that the Quadzilla datalink is not causing interference or compatibility issues.
- Check if the datalink configuration needs adjustment to work with the Nexiq adapter.
Potential Solutions
1. Adapter or Different Plug:
- Consider using an adapter that can convert the standard 3-pin connector to the triangular 3-pin plug required by the Nexiq adapter.
- Research if Nexiq offers a different version of the adapter with a standard 3-pin plug.
2. Firmware/Software Update:
- Update the Nexiq 3 USB connector's firmware or software to ensure compatibility with the ECMs of both Dodge models.
- Contact Nexiq support for any updates or patches that address specific issues with Dodge/Cummins vehicles.
3. Check Engine Light Resolution:
- Revisit the Check Engine Light communication code error to understand why it was triggered.
- Ensure the Nexiq adapter is securely connected and properly aligned to avoid triggering errors.
Conclusion
If anyone has experienced similar issues or has any insights, your advice would be greatly appreciated. The goal is to establish a reliable connection between the Nexiq 3 USB connector and both Dodge/Cummins ECMs to avoid communication errors and successfully diagnose and clear codes.
