Compensate 

Verb
1.     to pay someone money because they have suffered an injury or loss

E.g. victims of the crash will be compensated for their injuries.

Fatherland

Noun

1.      A person's native country, esp. when referred to in patriotic terms

2.      Germany, esp. during the period of Hitler's control

         E.g. Taiwan is my fatherland.

 Solemn

Adjective

1.      formal and dignified

2.      not cheerful or smiling; serious

3.      characterized by deep sincerity

 E.g. everyone looked very solemn.

 Oath

Noun

1.      a solemn promise, often invoking a divine witness, regarding one's future action or behavior

2.      a sworn declaration that one will tell the truth, esp. in a court of law

3.      a profane or offensive expression used to express anger or other strong emotions

 E.g. medieval knights took an oath of allegiance/loyalty to their lord.

 Hearsay

Noun

1.      information received from other people that one cannot adequately substantiate; rumor

2.      the report of another person's words by a witness, usually disallowed as evidence in a court of law

 E.g. the evidence against them is all hearsay.


 Sullen

Adjective

1.      angry and unwilling to smile or be pleasant to people

 E.g. his daughters stared back at him with an expression of sullen resentment.

Mortal

Adjective

1.      (of living things, especially people) unable to continue living for ever; having to die

  E.g. for all men are mortal.

Recede

Verb

1.      to move further away into the distance, or to become less clear or less bright

 E.g. as the boat picked up speed, the coastline receded into the distance until finally it became invisible.

Mend

1.      to repair something that is broken or damaged

 E.g. I've left my watch at the jeweler’s to be mended.

Draft

Noun

1.      a piece of text, a formal suggestion, or a drawing in its original state, often containing the main ideas and  intentions but not the developed form

E.g. this is only a rough draft - the finished article will have pictures as well.

1.      to praise someone in order to make them feel attractive or important, sometimes in a way that is not sincere

 E.g. I knew he was only flattering me because he wanted to borrow some money.

 E.g. who initiated the violence?

1.      to remove or take away someone or something

2.      to defeat someone so that they cannot continue in a competition

 E.g. he was eliminated in the third round of the competition.

 E.g. almost all of the guests were able to fit into the spaciousliving room.

1.      to collect something, usually after much work or with difficulty

 E.g. Coppola garnered several Oscar awards for 'The Godfather'.

         E.g. he is a millionaire recluse who refuses to give interviews.

1.      to face, meet, or deal with a difficult situation or person

         E.g. as she left the court, she was confronted by angry crowds who tried to block her way.

1.      an occasion when someone buys or sells something, or when money is exchanged or the activity of buying or

       selling something

 E.g. each transaction at the foreign exchange counter seems to take forever.

Reclusive

1.      a person who lives alone and avoids going outside or talking to other people

Symmetry

1.     the quality of having parts that match each other, especially in a way that is attractive, or similarity of shape or contents

E.g. the design of the house had a pleasing symmetry, its oblong shape being picked up in its elongated windows.

     E.g. the roads intersect near the bridge

1.    too big and taking up too much space

      E.g. we must not put such a bulky equipment into the bag.

1.    easily damaged, broken, or harmed

       E.g. be careful with that vase - it's very fragile.

Moody

Adjective

1.   if someone is moody, they are often unfriendly because they feel angry or unhappy

     E.g. he can be quite moody.
