Inclination

Noun

1.      a feeling that you want to do something

   E.g. the military government has shown little inclination to restore democracy

Vulgar

Adjective

1.      a vulgar joke, comment, action, etc. has a sexual meaning that is considered to be rude or offensive

2.      someone who is vulgar is rude, unpleasant, and offensive

3.      lacking the ability to judge what is attractive, suitable etc

   E.g. I've no idea how much the clothes cost because there was nothing so vulgar as a price tag in evidence.

Rancor

Noun

1.      a feeling of hate or anger that lasts a long time

   E.g. they cheated me, but I feel no rancor towards them.

Civility

Noun

1.       politeness or a polite remark

    E.g. she greeted them with civility, but not much warmth

Verbal

1.      spoken rather than written

    E.g. Airport officials received a stream of verbal abuse from angry passengers whose flights had

    been delayed.

1.      upset or worried

2.       having problems because of having too little money

    E.g. she was deeply distressed by the news of his death.

1.      the joining together of different political parties or groups for a particular purpose, usually for a limited time; a    government that is formed in this way

   E.g. government by coalition has its own peculiar set of problems.

   E.g. the Earth spins on its axis.

1.      (the ability to have) a clear, deep, and sometimes sudden understanding of a complicated problem or situation

   E.g. it was an interesting book, full of fascinating insights into human relationships

   E.g. the men had plainly lied.

Incumbent

1.      officially having the named position

E.g. the incumbent president faces problems which began many years before he took office.

Compilation

Noun

1.      the act of compiling something

2.       a book, CD, etc. that has been made from several separate parts

    E.g. a team of four was involved in the compilation of the book.

Polarize

1.      to cause something, especially something that contains different people or opinions, to divide into two    

         completely opposing groups

   E.g. the debate is becoming polarized and there seems to be no middle ground.


Vanquish

1.      to defeat an enemy or opponent, especially in war

   E.g. the vanquished army surrendered their weapons.

Engrossing

Adjective

1.      very interesting and needing all your attention

   E.g. I found the film completely engrossing from beginning to end.

Estranged

Adjective

1.      describes a husband or wife who is not now living with the person they are married to

2.      If you are estranged from your family or friends, you have seriously argued with them and are no longer    

         friendly with them

   E.g. it’s sad to see someone estranged from their parents.

Transcend

Verb

1.      to go further, rise above, or be more important or better than something, especially a limit

   E.g. the best films are those which transcend national or cultural barriers.


Alienated

Verb

1.      to cause someone or a group of people to stop supporting and agreeing with you

   E.g. all these changes to the newspaper have alienated its traditional readers.
