hello everyone,
welcome to Let’s Talk in English.
My name is Esther.
And my name is Garrett. Today,
we have a Tips lesson, and the name of our lesson is
"Taking Care of Yourself."
Right, that’s you—
you who are watching or listening right now.
We’re going to talk about how to take care of
both your body
and your mind today. Right, when you take care of something,
it means that you think about it and you spend time on it
so it can be healthy,
so it can be the best possible version of itself.
There are so many things you can do
to take care of yourself.
We’ll talk about them in our lesson today. First,
let’s go to our reading.
Everyone is busy,
but it’s easy to be too busy.
Then you may feel anxious or stressed.
You need to take care of yourself.
How can you do that?
First, make time to text or call your family and friends.
They care about you and can support you.
Get regular exercise.
You can walk, run,
hike, bike, or play a sport.
Get enough sleep, too.
Try to get seven to nine hours of sleep each night.
Good rest can make a big difference.
Make time for short breaks when you’re working or studying, too.
Thanks so much for that, Esther.
There were so many great tips in there.
And don’t worry, friends—we’ll talk about these more
as we go through our lesson today. First,
let’s go hear our Find It question. Here it is:
What should Sam take time to do?
What should Sam take time to do?
Listen carefully to find the answer.
Now here’s Sonia with our keywords:
朱莉說要照顧好自己,首先就是睡眠充足:
get enough sleep。
that can make a big difference。
make time to call or text friends or family。
they care about you and will support you。
take breaks when you’re working。
Hey Sam, how are you?
To tell you the truth, not good.
Why not?
I’m too busy, so I’m feeling pretty anxious and stressed.
I’m sorry to hear that.
You need to take care of yourself.
I know, but how?
One really basic thing—get enough sleep.
That can make a big difference.
You’re right. I do need more sleep.
Today, Julie and Sam are having a conversation,
and we start with Julie asking Sam
how he is doing. Julie asks, “Hey Sam,
how are you?” And Sam is very honest with her.
He says, “To tell you the truth, not good.”
So he wants to be honest about
how his day is going or how he’s feeling,
and it’s not going well.
But he doesn’t just say he’s bad.
Right—and if you want to tell someone
something very honestly or something from your heart,
you can also use this phrase:
“To tell you the truth.”
Well, Julie wants to know why this is true about Sam,
and so he shares,
“I’m too busy, so I’m feeling pretty anxious and stressed.”
That’s what Sam says, right?
And if you feel anxious or stressed,
you feel a lot of pressure—
you feel like you have a lot of things to do,
and it makes you a little upset or nervous.
Yeah, that word anxious specifically describes someone
who’s afraid of the future.
They don’t know what’s going to happen,
and they’re afraid things will go bad.
Julie tells Sam that she is sorry to hear this.
If someone tells you news that makes you feel sad or upset,
you can also use this phrase: “I’m sorry to hear that.”
“I’m sorry to hear that. You need to take care of yourself.”
That’s what Julie reminds Sam,
but he’s not quite sure how.
So here’s a tip that Julie gives. What is it, Esther?
Well, Julie tells Sam that he needs to get enough sleep. Yes.
What we do at night when we are tired—when you
lie in your bed and you close your eyes—is called sleeping.
Yeah, this is one of those words we can use as a noun,
something you can get,
but also something you do. You are
sleeping when you close your eyes and drift off
into dreamland.
Right, and Julie tells Sam that if he gets enough sleep,
that can make a big difference.
If something makes a big difference,
then it makes a big change or it’s very important.
Usually, when we use that phrase “make a difference,”
we’re using it in a positive or a good way—
to make things better for one person
or a lot of people.
Just like Sonia often does for us.
Isn’t that right, Sonia?
that can make a big difference。
Drinking a cup of coffee in the morning can make a big difference.
早上喝杯咖啡會很有用;
或是 Taking a walk in the park makes a difference.
How can I make a difference at school?
They want to make a difference in the world.
Thanks, Sonia. Well, earlier
we heard that getting
enough sleep or getting more sleep
is one simple thing that you can do
to make your day better or to make you feel better.
It really does make a difference. Right—in our reading,
we heard that you need seven to nine hours of sleep,
and Julie says this is very basic. It means it’s very simple,
but it’s hard to do.
It sure is.
Sometimes when you’re really busy or stressed,
you want to get things done,
or you just sit there worried
about all the things you haven’t finished.
But then you don’t get enough sleep,
and you feel even more worried. Right.
Or maybe you even have trouble falling asleep.
So Sam tells Julie, “You’re right.
I do need more sleep.”
Friends, it’s time for us to take a break.
Don’t go away. We’ll be right back.
Let’s Talk in English, Let’s Talk in
English every day, every day.
That’s the way! Welcome back,
friends. There are times when we all feel stressed.
We might feel anxious because we’re not sure
what we need to do or what might happen in the future.
What are some things we can do to feel
less stressed?
Many people like to do activities that are relaxing,
like listening to music,
doing some exercise,
or just going for a walk.
For me,
I’m often stressed because I have so many things to do,
and that makes me anxious.
So just focusing on one of those that I know I’m good at
can help make the stress go away.
Right, that’s a good tip. And I like to write things down.
Then I know what I need to do.
Let’s continue our lesson.
You also need regular exercise.
Take time to walk,
bike, or play a sport.
That will help you feel less stressed.
True. I’m not exercising enough.
And make time to call or text friends or family.
They care about you and will support you. That’s right.
I need to do that too. And
take breaks when you’re working.
I’m doing that now.
Friends, here we learned a phrase:
take time to do something. If you take time to do something,
it means you put aside time and you spend time
doing something you need to do.
That leads us to the answer to today’s Find It question.
That’s right, friends. Do you remember what the question was?
What should Sam take time to do?
He should take time to walk,
bike, or play a sport. And this is what Julie tells him.
She tells him that he needs regular exercise.
Remember, exercise is stuff like playing sports,
going to the gym, or
other things you do outside that get you moving.
Doing this is not just good for your body—
it can also help make your stress go away.
That’s true. Exercise is also good for our mind.
Giuli tells Sam that exercising will help him feel
less stressed.
Right now,
let’s go back to that phrase “to take time to do something.”
Often, in our busy schedules,
we might feel like we don’t have time
to do something like exercising,
but you just need to choose to use your time in this way.
Let’s take some time to learn from Sonya.
take time to walk, bike, or play a sport。
片語 take time to do something 是「花時間做某事」的意思。
Why don’t you take time to learn piano?
It takes time to be good at something.
還有另一個類似的片語 make time to do something,是「抽空做某事」的意思。
I’ll make time to call you next week.
我下週會抽時間打電話給你;
或是 Shawn made time to visit his grandma.
Shawn
Thank you, Sonya. Well,
Sam does know that he needs to exercise,
and he knows that he’s not doing it enough, right?
He needs to do it more, and Julie gives him another tip.
She says make time
to call or text friends or family. When you call someone,
you’re calling them on the
phone or from your cell phone. And when you text them,
you are sending them a message with words
from your phone or from your computer. You might say,
“I need to remember to text my lab partner
after school today.”
Texting is something many of us do
to communicate with others using our phones
when we don’t want to talk to them by calling. Right.
Someone might be busy or they might be at work,
so when you text them,
they can read the message
and reply to you when they have time.
Julie tells Sam that
Sam’s friends and family
care about him and will support him. Yeah,
they care about him and will support him.
Now, that word support there means to help him out.
This could be used to mean
someone is helping you do something.
If you’re moving to a new apartment,
you might need support with moving boxes.
But it could also be for your mind or how you’re feeling.
Right. If you have a friend who always cheers you up or
tells you that you can do it,
you can tell that friend:
“Thank you for your support.”
Exactly.
Well,
Sam says “I need to do that too,” and friends, that’s today’s
calendar phrase:
I need to do that too.
I need to do that too.
I need to do that too.
“I’m going to take care of myself.”
I need to do that too.
“I’m going to exercise more.”
I need to do that too.
“I’m going to sleep more.”
I need to do that too.
“I’m going to
take long breaks at work.”
I already do that.
Yeah—
I need to do that too.
And Julie also tells Sam
And Julie also tells Sam
that he needs to take breaks when he is working.
When you take a break,
you stop what you are
doing and you rest for a short time. Right.
Just like we take a break in the middle of our program,
it’s a time to think about what you’ve already learned
and relax a little bit before you continue.
And that’s what they are doing now—
they are taking a break in the break room.
Now let’s go and review our keywords.
Here’s your first keyword for today: text.
Text—how often do you text your friends?
Support
Support—I’ll support his idea.
Sleep
Sleep—he didn’t get enough sleep last night.
Make a difference
Make a difference—your help made a difference.
Break
Break—let’s take a break for five minutes.
Well, friends,
those are your keywords.
Go ahead and take a break after our program
to practice them some more.
And now it’s your turn.
Today’s words are:
texted, support, sleep, made a difference, and break.
Now it’s your turn to use them in a sentence. First one:
“How do you ______ your friends?”
This verb means to help.
How do you support your friends?
Next:
“Eating healthy ______ big.
I feel stronger now.”
Eating healthy made a big difference.
Next:
“I ______ her this morning.”
This means to send a message.
I texted her this morning.
Next:
“She got a good night’s ______.”
This is easy—
She got a good night’s sleep.
Last one:
“Do you need a ______ now? Are you tired?”
Do you need a break now?
And do you plan to come again tomorrow for Your Turn?
Hey Sam, how are you?
“To tell you the truth, not good.”
“Why not?”
“I’m too busy, so I’m feeling pretty anxious and stressed.”
“I’m sorry to hear that.
You need to take care of yourself.”
“I know, but how?”
“One really basic thing: get enough sleep.
That can make a big difference.”
“You’re right. I do need more sleep.”
“You also need regular exercise.
Take time to walk,
bike, or play a sport.
That will help you feel less stressed.”
“True. I’m not exercising enough.”
“And make time to call or text friends or family.
They care about you and will support you.”
“That’s right. I need to do that too.”
“And take breaks when you’re working.”
“I’m doing that now.”
One, two, let’s review!
“Hi everyone, how are you?”
“To tell you the truth, not good.”
“Not good? What do you mean?”
“I’m too busy.
I’m feeling anxious and stressed.”
“Oh, that’s good.”
“Why is that good?”
“Because I know some tips that can help you.”
“Tips like what?”
“One basic thing: get enough sleep.
That can make a big difference.”
“Hmm, I do need more sleep.
And regular exercise is important too.”
“Hmm, maybe I don’t exercise enough.”
“Take time to walk, bike, or play a sport.”
“Good idea. Maybe that will help me feel less stressed.”
“Exactly. Here’s another tip.”
“What’s that?”
“Call and text family and friends.
They care. They can help support you.”
“Those are good ideas.”
“Oh, and one more thing.”
“What’s that?”
“Take breaks.”
“That’s important too.”
“Yeah, I’ll take a break right now.”
“Wait, what about the review?”
“Ah, not now. I’m taking care of myself.”
Friends, today
we heard the sentence: You need to take care of yourself.
And we can make many sentences like this one with the words:
You need to ___ yourself. All right?
We just need to fill in the blank in the middle there.
You might want to say:
You need to be kind to yourself. Yes.
You can also say:
You need to help yourself.
What do you need to do for you, friends—or for yourself?
What can you do to make you the best you?
Right?
Think about all the tips we talked about:
Are you getting regular exercise?
Are you sleeping seven to nine hours every day?
If you do these things,
it will help you feel better and
do better in life, in whatever
you’re trying to do.
Friends, thank you for joining us.
We’ll see you again tomorrow
right here on Let’s Talk in English.
Goodbye!

Hello everyone, welcome to Let’s Talk in English.
My name is Garrett.
And my name is Esther.
Today, our topic is Tips, and our title is Taking Care of Yourself.
Remember that phrase:
“Taking care of” means to look after someone or to do things for them that help them, right?
We also take care of other people,
but we also need to take care of ourselves—
especially since sometimes we may feel anxious or stressed.
We might be afraid of what might happen in the future and feel pressure because we have a lot to do, yeah.
If you’re anxious or stressed,
it can be hard to push through that pressure.
So, what can you do?
Well, yesterday we talked about taking care of ourselves, right?
Yesterday, we talked about taking care of ourselves by getting regular exercise, sleeping, and texting or calling our family and friends for support.
All of these things can help out.
They won’t be perfect—
you won’t feel like it’s the best day of your life necessarily,
but they can make you feel better and help you do better in school, work, or with friends, right?
If you take care of yourself, it will make a difference.
Now let’s go to today’s Find It question:
Our question is: What has Sara started doing?
What has Sara started doing?
Well, we’ll have to find out in our lesson today, so pay close attention.
Now let’s go to Sonia, who will teach us today’s keywords.
Greg
“I decided I need to do a better job of taking care of my mental health.”
“I’m not a robot.”
Greg
“Exactly.”
“I am much calmer when I get back from a walk.”
Sara
“We shared about things in our lives.”
名詞 life 是「生活」,它的複數是 lives(l-i-v-e-s)。
Hi Greg, how are you doing?
Much better than last week.
I decided I need to do a better job of taking care of my mental health.
That’s important.
So how are you doing that?
Well, getting more sleep, for one.
I also stopped putting so much pressure on myself.
What do you mean?
I’m not a robot.
I can only do so much in a day.
So if you can’t get something done today, you can do it tomorrow.
Exactly.
Today, we start with Sara asking Greg how he is doing.
Well, Greg answers, and it sounds like he’s doing all right.
He says, “Much better than last week,” right?
So this means he wasn’t doing too well last week.
What change did he make?
Well, he says that he decided that he needs to do a better job taking care of his mental health.
Wow, there are a lot of words there.
Let’s start by taking a look at this word: decide.
Let’s decide to learn all about it!
When you decide to do something,
you choose to do it—
you have made that decision.
That would be the noun form of it.
You might say,
“I have decided to go to college next year,” right?
That means you made up your mind that you will go to college.
And what did Greg decide to do?
Well, he decided that he wants to take better care of his mental health.
Garrett, can you help tell us what mental health means?
Sure.
Well, when we talk about health, we’re often talking about our body and not hurting ourselves or getting sick.
Mental health, though, is all in our brain and our mind.
When you get really anxious or stressed,
it can hurt your mental health.
So we’re going to talk about how to help you out to avoid that, right?
It sure is important to have a healthy body, but also a healthy mind.
So when Sara asks Greg, “How are you doing that?”
She means: What is he doing to take care of his mental health?
Greg is following one of our tips from yesterday—
he’s getting more sleep,
but he’s also stopped putting so much pressure on himself.
Right here, the word pressure means the things that you tell yourself you have to do.
And if you don’t do them, you might feel bad.
Yeah, pressure is like the stress that you feel—
those words are very similar here.
Sara is not totally sure what Greg means,
so she asks, “What do you mean?”
And Greg responds:
“I’m not a robot.”
A robot is a machine that can do things by itself.
And “I am not a robot” is also today’s Calendar Phrase.
“I am not a robot.”
“I am not a robot.”
I need this work right away.
—Hey, I am not a robot!
Finish it quickly!
—I am not a robot!
Work during lunch!
—I am not a robot!
But I need it now!
—Then get a robot!
Fine.
“I am not a robot.”
Greg continues:“I can only do so much in a day.”
Greg continues:“I can only do so much in a day.”
Sonya, can you help us with that sentence?
Greg
"I can only do so much in a day" 這行主詞加 only,加動詞,加 so much。
Maggie can only eat so much in one meal.
Maggie
I can only remember so much at a time.
I only have so much energy in a day.
Jack only has so much money to spend.
Jack
Sarah agrees, so she says, "If you can’t get something done today, you can do it tomorrow."
Exactly. That’s how Greg responds. That word "exactly" means you have chosen the right answer or you know what I mean.
"Right" can also mean "yes."
Here, friends, now it’s time for us to take a break.
We’ll be right back after this.
Let’s talk in England. Let’s talk in England — ten minutes, today, every day. That’s the way!
Welcome back, friends.
Today we are talking about our mental health — how we can take care of our minds.
Garrett, what are some other ways we can take care of our mental health?
Well, this is a much bigger topic than we can really talk about in just this short program.
But I think some things to keep in mind are: our life is not meant to be lived just by ourselves.
It’s important to have people around you who can support you.
That’s right.
Everyone needs others to be part of their lives.
And if you are a thankful person, then you will feel better about life.
Well, let’s get back to our program.
That’s a healthy way to look at things. I know I’m also taking a walk at lunchtime most days.
I am much calmer when I get back from a walk.
Walking helps me too.
I’m also trying to spend less time on my phone and computer, and spend more time with people in person.
Me too. I’ve started having coffee with a different friend once a week.
We share about things in our lives.
Good idea.
It’s important to let others know how we’re doing.
Remember, Greg said, "I am not a robot," and Sarah said that if he can’t finish something today, he can do it tomorrow.
Right. He can do it tomorrow.
You don’t need to put all the pressure on yourself to get things done right away.
That’s true most of the time, unless you have important deadlines at work.
Right.
And Sarah agrees that not giving yourself too much pressure is a healthy way to look at things — or it’s a healthy way to live.
Greg continues. He says, "I’m also taking a walk at lunchtime most days."
Now, taking a walk is not heavy exercise.
It’s not going to make you really tired, but it will help you with your mental health as you go outside and breathe fresh air.
That’s true.
And Greg says that he feels much calmer when he comes back from a walk.
Now this word calm is one of our key words.
If you feel calm, you don’t feel nervous or scared — you have peace.
The word calm is a lot like the word relaxed.
And he feels calmer — or more calm — than he did before he started that walk.
Greg is also trying to spend less time on his phone and computer. That is a good tip,
because there’s always so much that we can do, see, watch, and read on our phones and our computers.
So instead of doing that, he is trying to spend more time with people in person.
Right.
I think I have a hard time with that sometimes.
There’s so much information on our phones or computers, and it can be hard to step away from that.
We feel like we might miss something, or we just find it so exciting.
That’s true.
When you spend time with people in person, it means you are talking to them face to face.
Now, let’s go to our final question.
Friends, did you find the answer?
Our question was: What has Sarah started doing?
She has started having coffee with a different friend once a week.
That’s a great idea.
It’s a way to connect with your friends and make sure you see them often.
Sarah says that they share about things in their lives.
Right. This word life is what we are living.
We all are living our lives.
And here, we’re talking about all the things going on that you do every day.
Their life can be multiplied — more than one person’s life is lives.
Let’s go to Sonia for more.
Sara
We share about things in our lives.
Life is a precious gift.
My friend and I had the time of our lives.
是 live(居住)的第三人稱單數。
I still live with my parents.
Anna lives on a farm.
Anna
Thanks, Sonya.
Greg says it’s important to let others know how we’re doing.
So, friends, make sure
you connect with a friend this week.
Sit down, maybe grab a coffee, and talk about life.
Right, and do that in person.
Now let’s go and review our keywords.
Here’s your first keyword for today: decide.
Decide — I’ve decided to stay home tonight.
Robot.
Robot — Robots never get tired.
Exactly.
Exactly — So you plan to stay? Exactly.
Calm.
Calm — She’s feeling much calmer now.
Life.
Life — What does your everyday life look like?
Well, friends, those are your keywords for today.
Keep on practicing them. You’re doing great already.
And now it’s your turn!
Today’s words are: decide, robots, exactly, calm, and life.
Now it’s your turn to use them in a sentence.
First one: ______ can drive cars.
You need a noun here.
Can robots drive cars?
Next: ______ stay. Don’t get upset.
Did you guess the answer?
Stay calm. Don’t get upset.
Next: What did you ______ about the party?
You need a verb here.
That’s correct: What did you decide about the party?
Next: A said, “We can’t take it all.”
B said, “______.”
This means yes.
A said, “We can’t take it all.”
B said, Exactly.
Last one: I really like my ______.
Great answer: I really like my life.
And I really like it when you join me here at Your Turn.
Hi Greg, how are you doing?
Much better than last week.
I decided I need to do a better job of taking care of my mental health.
That’s important.
So how are you doing that?
Well, getting more sleep for one.
I’ve also stopped putting so much pressure on myself.
What do you mean?
I’m not a robot.
I can only do so much in a day.
So if you can’t get something done today,
you can do it tomorrow.
Exactly. That’s a healthy way to look at things.
I know. I’m also taking a walk at lunchtime most days.
I am much calmer when I get back from a walk.
Walking helps me too.
I’m also trying to spend less time on my phone and computer,
and spend more time with people in person.
Me too. I’ve started having coffee
with a different friend once a week.
We share about things in our lives.
Good idea.
It’s important to let others know how we’re doing.
One, two — let’s review.
Hey, I’m feeling better. How about you?
Hey, that’s great! I’m glad you’re feeling better.
Me too. I’m doing a better job of taking care of myself.
That’s important. So, how are you doing that?
More sleep, for one.
Well, that’s good.
Also, I’m not putting so much pressure on myself.
What do you mean?
I can only do so much in a day.
I’m not a robot.
Right. If you don’t get something done, do it tomorrow.
That’s a healthy way to look at things.
Also, I’ve been walking more. That makes me calmer.
Walking helps.
Anything else?
Yes, I’m spending more time with people in person.
Oh, well, that’s good. You can share things.
Yes, and let others know how I’m doing.
Yeah, that’s great. So… let’s have coffee.
I can tell you how I’m doing.
Oh, wait — when?
Right now!
But what if we don’t finish the review?
We’ll do it tomorrow.
Oh, okay.
Oh, sorry — I didn’t see you there.
I was just texting on my phone.
Okay, I’ll put that away now.
Welcome back to What’s Next. My name is Siva.
Let’s take a look at some pictures today and guess what will happen next.
Are you ready?
Today’s picture starts with a girl walking in the neighborhood.
It looks like a calm place with nothing unusual.
There’s a girl dressed in a school uniform.
Hmm… is she going to school or coming back?
I guess she is not in a hurry, because she is looking at her phone.
That seems normal to me.
Oh, the girl is still looking at her phone while she is walking.
She is very distracted by her phone.
Where is she walking? Uh oh…
There is some construction on the sidewalk.
It looks like the sidewalk is being remade.
I don’t think the girl can see the orange cones.
She better look up from her phone, or she might get into trouble.
Look up, girl, look up!
What will happen next?
I told you to look up!
Now she has a problem.
She walked on the sidewalk which is still wet.
She made a couple of footprints because it is still wet.
Her shoes are now dirty.
She better step out before she gets stuck.
I think the sidewalk workers will be unhappy
that she did not look up from her phone.
Phones can be very distracting.
That’s why there are rules for not using your phone when moving around.
Always look around when moving around,
and don’t use the phone too much.
I’m working on that too.
Thanks for joining me today on What’s Next.
Friends, it’s so important to take care of our bodies and our minds.
Don’t give yourself too much pressure.
And do things that can help you stay calm and relaxed.
Right.
Let’s all set a goal to get more sleep, exercise,
and take care of ourselves.
Friends, we’ll see you again tomorrow right here on Let’s Talk in English.
Goodbye!
