Sure! Here’s your corrected version with the grammar fixed and the simplified Chinese changed to traditional Chinese:
Hi friends, welcome back!
My name is John, and today is a great day to learn something new, so let’s do that together.
My name is Anne Marie, and you’re joining us here on Studio Classroom.
Anne Marie and I will be talking about a big geographical mystery.
Anne Marie, are you ready?
For a question? Sure!
Anne Marie, have you ever lost something mysteriously? What happened?
Oh, have I ever lost something mysteriously? Well, once I lost my cell phone, and I really didn’t know what happened to it for a while.
Then I realized I had left it in a taxi, never to be seen again.
Wow, what a mystery!
If something is a mystery, it means you don’t really know what happened or where something went.
But today’s mystery is something called the Bermuda Triangle.
Let’s read about that together.
The Bermuda Triangle
Exploring the mystery of disappearing ships and airplanes.
The ocean is full of mysteries, and one of the most haunting of these involves an area known as the Bermuda Triangle.
This area of the Atlantic Ocean can be seen on a map by drawing lines connecting the islands of Bermuda and Puerto Rico and the coast of Florida.
In this triangular area, dozens of ships and airplanes have mysteriously vanished.
These disappearances have inspired a variety of theories, each with different degrees of likelihood.
Welcome to Language Lab. I’m Jack.
首先來看 "haunting" 這個形容詞,它是動詞 "haunt" 的現在分詞,意思是:令人難忘的,久久不散的。
例如:
Although it sounds like a human voice, that low, haunting sound outside my window is only the wind.
雖然窗外那個低沉、揮之不去的聲音聽起來像人的聲音,但只是風聲而已。
動詞 "haunt" 的意思是使經常苦惱或是不斷困擾。
例如:
I have no idea who that old man was, but his strange question has been haunting me all week.
我不知道那個老人是誰,但他的奇怪問題整整困擾了我一星期。
"Haunt" 也可以當名詞,意思是常去的地方。
例如:
That bookstore on the corner is one of my favorite haunts. You can find me there every weekend.
街角的那家書店是我最喜歡去的地方之一,每個週末你都可以在那裡找到我。
Alright, friends, we’re talking about a place called the Bermuda Triangle.
It’s an area just outside the Caribbean Sea, kind of near the state of Florida for those of you who know American geography.
And there is a mystery there. What keeps happening?
Well, we read it here right at the beginning of our article:
Exploring the mystery of disappearing ships and airplanes.
So we see here that there are ships and airplanes that are just going missing.
Now, our article begins reminding us that the ocean is full of mysteries.
You can use this phrase "full of" for all kinds of things.
And one of the most haunting of these, we read, involves an area known as the Bermuda Triangle, which we talked about.
Now, what does it mean, Anne Marie, if something involves something else?
Well, "involved" can mean a couple of different things, but when involves is used in this situation, it means that something is included in the group with something else.
I see. So I could say, "The story I’m reading involves a couple of students and a mystery."
That’s right.
And we also see here this area known as the Bermuda Triangle.
As John said, it’s kind of near the state of Florida and some of the islands in the Caribbean or Caribbean.
That’s right. There isn’t a triangle that you can see on the map easily, but there’s a connection between islands.
A lot of things are happening in the Bermuda Triangle as we read.
This area of the Atlantic Ocean can be seen on a map by drawing lines connecting the islands of Bermuda and Puerto Rico and the coast of Florida.
So the idea here, as John said, is this isn’t an actual triangle, but if you draw lines between these different countries, you will find that the shape is kind of like a triangle.
That’s why it’s called the Bermuda Triangle.
As you remember, a triangle is a shape with three sides.
Right, TRI usually means three when you see it in a word, which we do again right here in this triangular area.
Dozens of ships and airplanes have mysteriously vanished.
If something is triangular, it just means it’s shaped like a triangle.
That’s right! She liked the triangular piece of art, so she bought it to put on her living room wall.
But we read on here: Dozens of ships and airplanes have mysteriously vanished.
Now, if something vanishes, it means that it disappears suddenly and completely.
That’s right. It’s kind of like that word vanity, which means emptiness, so something becomes empty or goes away. It vanished. I could say, "I was so hungry, I made my food vanish during breakfast."
We read that these disappearances, though, have inspired something.
That’s right! They have inspired a variety of theories, each with different degrees of likelihood.
Now, we see this word degrees here. And if there is a degree of something, what does that mean?
It means a level or an amount used here. So different levels of likelihood, not very likely to very likely.
The word degree normally is represented by a little circle that’s raised up above the lettering, and typically a full circle has 360 degrees for the angle.
But here, degrees mean different levels of likelihood.
Now, what does this word likelihood mean?
Well, friends, it means how likely or how possible it is that something is going to happen.
So these disappearances have all kinds of theories surrounding them.
People have ideas of why they happen.
Some of the ideas are possibilities. Some of these ideas have no way that they could possibly be true.
So let’s see what these ideas and theories are together in the next section of our reading.
The Bermuda Triangle
The earliest reports of ships disappearing in the Bermuda Triangle come from the middle of the 19th century. In some cases, the ships were found abandoned, but with no clear reason why the people had disappeared.
Other vessels were never found. Airplanes also began disappearing in the area in the 20th century.
接下來看 "vessel" 這個名詞,意思是船隻。
例如:
Will it be safe to take that old fishing vessel out onto the river, or should we rent a new boat?
我們在河上搭乘那艘舊漁船安全嗎,還是該租一艘新船呢?
Vessel 也是指器皿的意思,譬如:
This delicate vessel was made by a famous glass maker in Italy, so please don’t let the children hold it.
這個精緻的器皿是由一位意大利著名玻璃工匠製作的,所以不要讓小孩拿。
Vessel 也有血管的意思哦。
例如:
The doctor explained that the redness on my skin is due to broken blood vessels.
醫生解釋說,我皮膚上的紅斑是因為血管破裂造成的。
Alright, there’s a lot of history in this area.
Whenever I think about this area of the world, I think about pirates sailing ships. How about you?
I usually think of wild conspiracy theories, so explanations for something that probably aren’t true or that people have come up with to explain something that they don’t understand.
Yeah, and we get these theories from reports.
We read that the earliest reports of ships disappearing in the Bermuda Triangle come from the middle of the 19th century.
Remember, the nineteenth century means the 1800s.
What does that phrase "the earliest reports" mean?
So when you see this phrase the earliest reports of something in a sentence, it’s talking about the first known record of something.
So the idea here is that this could have been happening a long time earlier, but probably the first time it happened was when people started saying that it happened or wrote down that it happened.
I see. And you can use it for old things or new things.
I could say, "The earliest reports of it raining came from one little weather station."
We also read here that in some cases the ships were found.
But how were the ships doing?
We see here that these ships were abandoned.
So the ship hadn’t crashed, but all the people were gone, but with no clear reason why the people had disappeared.
We see this term here:no clear reason
We use this in English to explain a situation when there is no possible explanation, or you can’t understand why something happens, and you’re not able to explain it in an easy way.
That’s right. You could say, "There was no clear reason why he stopped going to class," but one day, he didn’t show up.
Now, we also read that other vessels were just never found. The word vessel here means a ship or something you go out on the water in.
That’s right. So we have two different situations here. We have some cases where the ships are still there, and there are just no people on them. They’ve been abandoned, or the actual ship or vessel has never been found in the first place. Wow.
But we read on here:
Airplanes also began disappearing in the area in the 20th century.
So then, of course, once airplanes were invented, those started going missing too.
That’s right. So there are a lot of missing vessels and airplanes. I wonder what happened.
We’ll have to read some of these theories, Emory.
I have a question:
Have you ever flown in a plane or gone on a boat over the Atlantic Ocean?
Oh, over the Atlantic Ocean?
You know, I don’t think that I have. Any time that I have traveled to Asia, it’s been over the Pacific Ocean, and the Pacific Ocean is a lot bigger.
But in this area of the world, the narrow Atlantic Ocean is right next to the Caribbean Sea, or the Caribbean Sea as many people call it.
That Caribbean Sea is where you have islands like, I think, well, Bermuda, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and it’s known as a great place to find great beaches.
A lot of people sail there as well.
That’s right. I have never flown down there or visited myself, but I would like to someday.
Alright, friends, well, we have something else to learn right now, so let’s take a trip to today’s InfoCloud.
Welcome to InfoCloud!
Hi, Rex, have you ever seen a magician perform?
They can do amazing things!
Yes, some magicians can make things vanish without a trace.
I wonder how they do it.
Well, as the saying goes, "A magician never reveals his secrets."
But we can reveal the meaning of the phrase without a trace.
We can use verbs like vanish, disappear, or to be gone with this when someone or something has disappeared.
A detective might look for clues to find it.
These clues could be traces of what happened, like fingerprints, DNA, or other things that might give you information.
So if something is gone without a trace, that means there are no signs left behind of what happened or where it went.
That means it would be very hard to follow it or track it down.
For example, "The money vanished without a trace." In this case, there is no record of bank transfers or receipts to tell us where the money went.
So when something disappears without a trace, there is a good chance you will never find it again.
vanish without a trace 憑空消失
vanish without a trace 憑空消失
當一樣東西好像憑空消失,完全找不到,沒有留下任何蛛絲馬跡,你可以用 vanish without a trace來形容。
trace 有痕跡的含義。Vanish 就是消失,vanished without a trace 就是消失得無影無蹤,找不到任何線索,完全下落不明。
The money vanished without a trace.
那筆錢就這樣不見了,完全找不到了。
除了 vanish without a trace, 你也可以用 disappear without a trace 或 gone without a trace,意思幾乎是一模一樣的。
這就是今天的 INFO Cloud,我們下次雲端見。
The Bermuda Triangle
The Bermuda Triangle
One famous disappearance was Flight 19, which refers to five airplanes that left a U.S. military base together on December 5th, 1945.
One pilot reported that his compass was not working correctly.
The pilots all lost track of where they were going, flew out to the open ocean, and vanished.
One of the rescue crews that went out after them also disappeared.
In the mid-20th century, writers began to pick up on the pattern of disappearances in the Bermuda Triangle.
Many of them wrote stories full of exaggerations that drew attention to this region.
今天的 usage tip 是 one of 和 each of 接單數動詞的用法。
課文裡 one of the rescue crews that went out after them also disappeared
裡面的 one of the rescue crews 是指其中一位 crew。如果是指每一位 crew,就要使用 each of 來表示。
由於 one 和 each 都是單數,所以用 one 或 each 這個名詞來當主詞的時候,就要使用單數動詞。
我們來看一個例句:
Each of the machines in the factory makes loud noises.
工廠裡的每一台機器,都会发出巨大的噪音。
Alright, time to talk about specific mysteries.
We read that one famous disappearance was Flight 19. This is an airplane. What happened?
Well, this is actually five different airplanes all at once.
It refers to five airplanes that left a U.S. military base together on December 5th, 1945.
So when we see this term here to refer to something, it means it’s mentioning something or alluding to it.
Okay, you could say, "Oh, I referred to one book that I read in my English paper."
You can refer to things in conversation too. I could say, "I referred to something from a year ago in my conversation."
We also read here that one pilot did report something. What did he report on this Flight 19?
Okay, so we had these five airplanes.
One of the pilots of one of the airplanes sent a report.
He said his compass was not working correctly.
Now, a compass is what these aircraft were using to know where north and south were. So they were getting all of their coordinates that way.
So if your compass isn’t working while you’re flying, what might happen?
Well, you get lost. You might even run out of fuel and crash.
He said his compass was not working correctly.
But the pilots all lost track of where they were going.
If you lose track of something, it means you become unable to know where something is.
You can also lose track of things like time, right?
Yeah, so for example, you could say, "We were having so much fun talking. I totally lost track of time, and I was late leaving."
But we read on here, these pilots lost track of where they were going.
They flew out into the open ocean and vanished.
The open ocean is a term we use for the sea. It’s a little bit different from other kinds of water, right?
That’s right. So the open ocean is just ocean that’s far away from land.
So I imagine if somebody crashes in the open ocean or gets stranded in the open ocean, there’s really no way for them to get back to shore.
It’s really hard to swim your way back to land from the open ocean.
Many people like to go fishing for giant fish in the open ocean, fish like sharks.
We also see this word again, vanished, right?
That means they disappeared. You remember that from earlier.
What happened to one of the rescue crews that went to find them?
Well, we find that out here in our usage tips sentence for today, friends.
One of the rescue crews that went out after them also disappeared.
So the rescue crew is the group of people that’s going out to save the people who need help.
It’s always when a rescue crew shows up and helps people.
My brother is actually part of a rescue crew in California, rescuing people from fires, which is really cool.
We also read, in the mid-20th century, writers began to think about this.
That’s right. We read here that they began to pick up on the pattern of disappearances in the Bermuda Triangle.
Now, if somebody picks up on something, it means they become aware of something or they begin to understand it.
Oh, okay. You can pick up on cues from social situations, for example.
I could say, "I started to pick up on the fact that it was time to leave the party."
They also began to pick up on this pattern of disappearances, so they started realizing, "Hang on, lots of people are going missing."
And then something else happened:
Many of them wrote stories full of exaggerations that drew attention to this region.
So they’re writing down their experiences, but they’re not exactly just writing what happened, are they?
That’s right.
They are exaggerating or making it seem bigger than it was.
And this draws attention to the area.
If you draw attention to something, it means you make other people notice it.
And now, friends, it’s time for us to draw attention to today’s Fun Fact.
Hello, Fact Friends!
I am detective Ernest Finder, and I have a fun fact for you today.
Did you know that plane disappearances in the Bermuda Triangle inspired director Steven Spielberg?
That’s right, Steven Spielberg heard about the Bermuda Triangle, and he turned the event into an alien movie. Pretty cool!
And that is today’s Fun Fact!
Well, Emory, I’ve got a question for you.
Okay.
This is our Talk About It question:
Why do you think people are so curious about places like the Bermuda Triangle?
Hmm, this is a good question because I know personally, I am very curious about the Bermuda Triangle.
I think, John, as humans, we are always curious about the things that we can’t fully understand. We have curiosity in us, wondering how things work or maybe about mysteries that are just beyond us, and we just can’t comprehend.
Absolutely. Well, friends, I hope you’re curious with us because tomorrow we’ll continue our conversation about the mysterious Bermuda Triangle.
Well, that’s all the time we have for today. My name is Anne Marie.
And my name is John. Friends, I hope you’ll join us tomorrow right here on Studio Classroom.

Sure! Here’s the revised version, with corrected English grammar and the simplified Chinese converted to traditional Chinese:
Hi friends, welcome back!
I’m John, and today is a great day to learn something new. It certainly is, so let’s do that together.
My name is Ann Marie, and this is Studio Classroom. If you joined us yesterday, you’ll remember we were talking about the Bermuda Triangle. It’s a mysterious place.
That’s right, the Bermuda Triangle is located off the coast of Florida, near the islands, near the Caribbean.
And this isn’t a real triangle, of course, but if you connect the islands with an invisible line, then it kind of makes the shape of a triangle. That’s right.
Many writers started picking up on the fact that planes and ships were mysteriously disappearing in the Bermuda Triangle. Sometimes, that’s right.
These reports started around the middle of the 19th century, and we found out about one of the most famous disappearances, Flight 19.
Flight 19 went missing. I think Flight 19 was five planes, and it began making people wonder about a mystery.
There’s a lot more to learn about the mysteries in the Bermuda Triangle, so let’s do that together right now.
The Bermuda Triangle
An abundance of explanations has been proposed for the disappearances in the Bermuda Triangle.
Some of these have to do with scientifically measurable conditions, while others are much stranger.
Some paranormal explanations include activity by space aliens and distortions in space and time.
Others propose that the mythical city of Atlantis, which was said to have highly advanced technology before sinking under the ocean, may have been located in this region.
Some even proposed that energy from Atlantis’ technology interferes with navigational equipment.
Hi everyone, I’m Jack. 今天的 usage tip 是主詞加 may 加 have 加過去分詞的用法。
這個句型是表示對過去事件的推測,不同的助動詞代表不同程度的推測。
如果使用 could 或 may have 加過去分詞,意思是可能或許已經,表示推測的成分比較多。
但是如果你使用 must 加 have 加過去分詞,則是對過去事件的猜測很有把握,認為某件事發生的可能性很高。
來看個例句:“The water must have been polluted because it smells so bad.” 水一定已經被污染了,因為氣味很難聞。
Well, friends, now it’s time to figure out this mystery, if we can, as we read together.
An abundance of explanations has been proposed for the disappearances in the Bermuda Triangle.
If you use this phrase, “an abundance of,” it means there’s a lot of something, right?
Exactly. And what is there a lot of here? Well, there is a lot of proposals or ideas of what’s going on in the Bermuda Triangle.
We see this as a verb here. The word “proposed” means that you put forward a plan, or a suggestion, or an idea so that others can consider it and decide if it’s true or not.
That’s right. You could say, “The teacher proposed a change to the class schedule.”
Or we use this word a little bit differently when we’re talking about a guy proposing to his girlfriend to make her his wife.
Right, to “propose” here means to say, “Do you want to get married?”
That’s right, which is a plan or a suggestion that someone is putting out for the consideration of someone else.
So they do kind of mean a similar thing here, but they’re two different situations.
But we read on here:
Some of these have to do with scientifically measurable conditions. What do we mean here by scientifically measurable conditions, John?
If something is measurable, it means it’s able to be tested, but also quantified, which means you can put a number to it.
Basically, a lot of things are not measurable, like love, but here things like water temperature or how much rain there is—those are measurable.
Exactly. So we see that some of these conditions are measurable, but some are much stranger. Some paranormal explanations include activity by space aliens and distortions in space and time.
Now, when we’re talking about something that’s paranormal, we’re talking about something that is outside of the norm.
A lot of times when you see this word, it means we’re talking about something happening in outer space.
That’s right. And there’s a word here that’s really interesting: “distortion.”
If you see that prefix dis, it means not, but what is a distortion?
Well, a distortion is a twist out of a natural, normal, or original shape or condition.
So the meaning here is people are saying in the Bermuda Triangle, maybe time is actually being changed and doesn’t work the same way it does in other places.
Oh, that’s interesting. A distortion in time would be something new!
Now, friends, we also read that others proposed that the mythical city of Atlantis, which was said to have had highly advanced technology before sinking under the ocean, may be located in this region.
Okay, first of all, Atlantis is a legendary island that was supposed to have been swallowed by the sea.
That’s right. So maybe Atlantis is at the bottom of the Bermuda Triangle. That’s why so many ships and planes go missing above the water.
This is one of the theories.
Here’s another one:
Some even propose that energy from Atlantis’s technology interferes with navigational equipment.
Okay, we have this word “navigational” here.
When we’re talking about navigation, we mean the act of directing a ship or an aircraft from one place to another.
So it’s the idea of how it’s getting there.
Absolutely. If something is interfering with your navigational equipment, you won’t be able to know where you’re going.
You could use “interferes” in a sentence:
I could say, “My little brother keeps interfering with my studying. He always wants to play.”
Has anything ever interfered with a plan that you have had?
Yeah, the weather interferes with my plans all the time.
But I have a question for you now, Jon.
Here are some explanations that we’ve had for the Bermuda Triangle so far. What’s your opinion about this paranormal activity or the city of Atlantis? What do you think?
Well, I do know that with enough energy, space and time can be distorted, so maybe that’s what’s going on.
I’m not sure, though.
Alright, well friends, let’s find out some more about the Bermuda Triangle with the next part of our reading.
The Bermuda Triangle
Government agencies and scientific researchers, however, deny any paranormal occurrences in the Bermuda Triangle.
They argue instead that the disappearances are due to violent storms, which can be difficult to predict in that area.
In part of the Bermuda Triangle, there are anomalies in Earth’s magnetic field, which cause compasses to point in a slightly different direction.
This could explain some of the problems with navigational equipment.
It also would explain why disappearances in the Bermuda Triangle have become less frequent. The last was in 2020.
Improved technology has proven more capable of dealing with the problems that tend to come up there.
我們來看 “Occurrence” 這個名詞,它的意思是遭遇或是事件。
例如: “Southern California has had its worst occurrence of drought in a decade.”
南加州遭遇了十年來最嚴重的乾旱。
“Occurrence” 的動詞是 “occur”,意思是發生。
譬如:“During construction of the new building, minor damage occurred to the building next door.”
在新大樓施工期間,隔壁的建築物發生了輕微的損壞。
或者是:“The idea just occurred to me that my son’s teacher might be able to use these colorful jars for art projects.”
我突然想到,我兒子的老師也許可以在美術課用這些彩色罐子。
Alright, well, we read that government agencies and scientific researchers, however, deny any paranormal occurrences in the Bermuda Triangle. What does this mean?
Well, if you deny something, it means that you say it is untrue or it never happened.
And here’s why they say this in the next sentence. We read that they argue instead that the disappearances are due to violent storms.
Now, you are familiar with the word “argue,” friends.
When two people are arguing, it means they have two different points of view, and sometimes there is a fight or an argument because the other person believes they’re right, and you believe you’re right as well.
However, here the word “argue” just means that someone has a point of view, and they are giving you evidence to support their point of view.
That’s right. So there’s a nice way to say it, and then a way that we’re talking about a fight in this kind of nice way.
You could say, “The teacher argued that students should do five hours of homework instead of four.”
Oh, that sounds like a lot of homework!
But we see here that violent storms are difficult to predict in that area.
So this sounds like it is a very plausible reason for the disappearances.
Now that word “plausible” is not in your article, friends, but I want to talk about it for a minute.
If something is plausible, it means that you can believe it; it seems reasonable.
That’s right. So what is actually happening here?
Certain agencies are saying that it’s just storms, but we read that these storms can be difficult to predict in the area, and in part of the Bermuda Triangle, there are anomalies in Earth’s magnetic field.
First of all, an anomaly is something, an unusual event or occurrence.
That’s right. So if there is an anomaly in the magnetic field, this could explain some of the problems with navigational equipment.
Remember yesterday?
We learned that the pilots compasses werent pointing in the right direction. Well, if that is truly the case, because of these magnetic fields, that might be why so many planes are crashing or ships go off course. There is a phrase here that is great if you are reading about ships or vehicles, and that is navigational equipment. This phrase means machines or tools used to show the direction, especially in a boat or plane, and if you’re on the open ocean, you need your navigational equipment.
Yeah, we actually call Google Maps a "navigation app" now because Google Maps (or Apple Maps, if thats what you use) tells you where to go. So, it is your navigation app.
Thats right! I dont know if you get the internet in the Bermuda Triangle, but we do read that this could explain some of the problems.
And we also realize, we also read that it would explain why disappearances in the Bermuda Triangle have become less frequent. The last was in 2020.
Okay, so that’s good news! Some of this problem seems to be going away.
That makes a lot of sense because after airplanes were invented and they were flying over the Bermuda Triangle, there were a lot of problems with navigation. Now, because we have an idea that it might be because of the Earths magnetic field, it’s a correctable problem. So that’s why there are fewer disappearances.
We read on: improved technology has proven more capable of dealing with the problems that tend to come up there.
If something comes up, it means that it happens unexpectedly.
That’s right! It can be a bad thing. You could say, "Many problems came up while I was working yesterday," or you could use it in a good way. You could say, "I came up with a new idea for her birthday party."
That’s right! Alright friends, we are going to learn something now in today’s InfoCloud.
InfoCloud
Hello friends, welcome to InfoCloud! Hey, Garrett! Last night I heard some strange noises.
Hey Rex! Things that go bump in the night usually aren’t anything to worry about.
Did you find out what the sounds were?
Yes, it was just my air filter.
Let’s talk about what you just said, things that go bump in the night.
Sure, Rex, that’s a classic. It refers to mysterious or spooky noises, especially the kind that make you nervous when it’s dark and quiet. The phrase is used to talk about the fear of unknown things, especially at night when our imaginations are running wild.
That makes sense! So it’s kind of like saying, "Don’t worry, it’s probably nothing."
Yep! It’s often associated with scary stories or Halloween, when people’s imaginations are more active.
I get it! So, when the house creaks or you hear something fall over in the dark, you could say, "That’s just one of those things that go bump in the night."
Exactly! It’s been used in literature and movies to describe supernatural or eerie occurrences, but in everyday language, it’s more light-hearted.
So it’s a fun way to refer to anything mysterious or scary without taking it too seriously.
I’ll keep that in mind the next time something goes bump in the night!
Anytime, Rex! Just remember, most of the time, things that go bump in the night are nothing to worry about.
The Bermuda Triangle
The Bermuda Triangle has provoked questions and guesses for years, and it seems likely that we will never be fully able to explain the mysterious disappearances that occur there.
Let’s look at the verb provoke. It means to stir up or cause. For example:
"When the newspaper published a story exposing a factory for polluting the river, it provoked widespread anger."
Or, "I think that even a controversial piece of art can provoke conversation that will lead to greater appreciation for arts place in our society."
The present participle of provoked, provoking, can be used as an adjective meaning something that causes anger. For example:
"I woke up at 4 a.m. to get to the airport on time, so my flight’s two-hour delay was really provoking."
Well, friends, there are a lot of questions about the Bermuda Triangle. As we read, "The Bermuda Triangle has provoked questions and guesses for years."
What’s the difference between a question, like asking something, and a guess?
Hmm, well, this is a really good question, John. You ask a question when you want to know the answer, but when you have a guess, it means that you’re thinking about what the answer might be.
Oh, okay! So you could guess the answer, but you don’t necessarily know. It’s just your idea.
And we read, "It seems likely that we will never be fully able to explain the mysterious disappearances that occur there."
But I want to know! I want to be able to explain. Are you able to explain the phrase able to explain?
I am able to explain that phrase!
So, this means you can make something perfectly clear or make it very easy to understand. So the point here is we might never fully be able to understand what happened in the Bermuda Triangle or what’s happening there now, and all these mysterious disappearances might not actually ever have a reason for happening.
That’s right! There’s an explanation.
This phrase able to explain is really useful if you get into trouble. You can say, "Hang on, I’m able to explain." Maybe a kid makes a mess in their house, and their mom comes home, and the kid says, "Wait, Mom, don’t get mad! I’m able to explain."
That’s right!
Now, we also see this word disappearances here in this sentence. Just to make a note, friends, this is a noun. If something disappears or vanishes, as we saw in yesterday’s lesson, that means it goes away and you can’t find it. But a disappearance means a certain instance of something disappearing.
Exactly! Normally, it’s very sudden—you look at it, and then you look back, and it’s disappeared. There was a disappearance. So all these disappearances, we may never know the reason.
That’s right!
Fun Fact
Alright friends, it is time for us to learn something new in today’s Fun Fact.
Hello, Fact friends! I am detective Ernest Finder, and I have a fun fact for you today. Did you know that in the Bermuda Triangle, compasses act very strangely and work differently?
That’s right! A compass shows you the direction, right? And normally, they point to the Earth’s magnetic north pole. But in the Triangle, they point at the actual north pole! Pretty useful if you need to find the North Pole from Bermuda.
And that is today’s fun fact!
Talk About It
Alright, Anne Marie, we’ve been talking about a mystery in the Bermuda Triangle with our friends. Now, let’s go to our Talk About It question. Are you ready?
I’m ready!
Okay, Talk About It together:
What explanations for the disappearances in the Bermuda Triangle are most interesting to you?
Well, I really, really like the idea of Atlantis, the old city that was on an island, and then the island sunk to the bottom of the ocean. And the technology being so advanced that it’s actually messing with ships and airplanes’ navigation to this day.
Yeah, I think it’s pretty cool that magnets can change navigational equipment, so I like that explanation too. But maybe it’s just the weather. I don’t know. I know that the Atlantic Ocean is really cold and the Caribbean Sea is really warm. Maybe it creates something, like an anomaly.
Maybe! I guess we’ll never know, friends, but this is something great for you to talk about in English!
Which of these explanations are the most interesting to you?
Well, friends, that’s all the time we have for today. My name is Ann Marie.
And my name is John. Friends, thank you for joining us as we talked about a mystery today. I hope you’ll join us next time right here on Studio Classroom!
