Overview
OpenX Source Ad Server is an open source system that allows website owners to manage and optimize the advertising space on one or more websites. This article provides instructions on installing OpenX Source Ad Server v2.8.9 to your Nexcess hosting account.

Prerequisites

  • Your FTP account login and server information provided in your Nexcess Welcome Email.
  • An FTP client application installed on your local drive. For information about installing FTP client applications, refer to How to Use FTP Client Programs.
  • A file archiving and compression tool to extract the .zip installation file; for example, 7-Zip and WinZip.

Notes

  • As a courtesy, we try to provide the most up-to-date information involving third-party technologies; however, we cannot guarantee the accuracy of such content, nor can we guarantee the performance of the product. If the text or example screenshots do not match your version, please refer to the documentation provided by the applicable third-party company.
  • This article assumes you are installing OpenX for the first time. If you currently have an older version of OpenX and wish to upgrade, please follow the instructions provided on the Upgrading OpenX page on the OpenX website.
  • The instructions provided in this article assume that you are installing the application to your primary domain name, and therefore refer to your document root directory, or web root, as home/examplec/example.com/html, where examplec is the first eight characters of your domain name. If you have multiple domains on your Nexcess account and wish to install OpenX to a domain other than your primary,  select that domain's document root directory when following these instructions.

Procedure

Create a MySQL database and user

Before installing OpenX, you will need to create a MySQL database, which OpenX will use to store its data. For instructions on creating a MySQL database through your SiteWorx account, refer to How to create a MySQL database. Make note of the database and user information so that you can input it during the OpenX installation.

Download the installation files

Follow the steps below to properly configure the files to ensure successful installation.

  1. Open your browser and navigate to the OpenX Downloads page and then click DOWNLOAD NOW
pop-up window appears, prompting you to read the limitations of using OpenX Source.
OpenX Installation - Notice of Limitations
  2. If you accept the limitations and wish to proceed, click the check box and click DOWNLOAD.
  3. The next page requires you to register. Fill in all required fields, and click Submit.
  4. Click the appropriate .zip file download option.
OpenX Installation - Download .zip File
  5. Wait for the download to complete and then proceed to Step 3.

Configure the installation files

Now that you have downloaded and extracted the OpenX installation files, follow the instructions below to upload the files to the document root directory on your your hosting account. Your primary domain uses home/examplec/example.com/html as the root directory. If you have multiple domains and wish to install OpenX to a domain other than your primary, select the appropriate document root directory.

There are various ways in which you can upload files to your hosting account. The instructions below refer to using the FileZilla FTP client. You can use whatever method or FTP client that you wish.

  1. On you local drive, go to the location where you downloaded the .zip file.
  2. Using your preferred file compression tool, extract the openx-2.8.9.zip  file to a destination on your local drive.
  3. Wait for the file extraction process to complete. Open your preferred FTP client and then connect to your hosting account.
    • Example Screen Showing OpenX Files Displaying in FileZilla
  4. Navigate to the location where you extracted the openx-2.8.9 file
  5. Rename the openx-2.8.9 folder on the local drive to openx so all OpenX files will be uploaded at once. Also, since the openx folder will be uploaded to your document root directory /html, the URL for accessing OpenX on the website will automatically be defined. For example, if your domain name is example.com and openx is the directory name, the URL will be http://example.com/openx.
  6. If you want the URL for your OpenX installation to be something other than openx, change the name of the openx-2.8.9 to the desired name. For example, if you want the URL to be http://www.example.com/ads, rename the openx-2.8.9  folder on your local drive to be ads, then in your /html directory, create a folder named ads.
  7. Click to expand the openx-2.8.9 subdirectory.
  8. There will be another subdirectory, also named openx-2.8.9.
  9. Right-click on the second subdirectory and then select Rename.
    • OpenX Folders on Local Drive (Displaying in FileZilla)
  10. Do one of the following:
    1. If you want your OpenX installation to be named openx, click inside the box and move the cursor to the end of the file extention.
    2. Press Backspace to delete the -2.8.9 part of the folder name, but do not delete the openx. Press Enter.
    • Example Screen Showing Renaming of the openx-2.8.9 Folder
  11. If you want your OpenX installation to be named something other than openx, click inside the field and type your name, and press Enter.
