The Gifts the Universe Gives Us

The Universe constantly offers us gifts- sometimes sweet, sometimes bitter, and often in unexpected forms.

Yet these gifts rarely reveal themselves unless we have the wisdom to treat each encounter as a blessing, and ask: “What is this moment trying to teach me? How can I embrace it with a positive heart?”

As the saying goes, “What is rare is precious.” When we are surrounded by abundance, it’s easy to forget to be grateful.

Perhaps this old man was finally waking up to that truth- or maybe he was still on the path toward it.

So, during the Independence Day weekend, he left behind the sunshine and noise of Silicon Valley and journeyed 800 miles to the quiet wilderness of Powder Mountain Ridge in Utah- 9,400 feet above sea level.

There, in the silence of the mountains, he sought to learn how to truly appreciate what he had taken for granted.

Unaccustomed to the thin mountain air, he fell slightly ill for two days. As he struggled to breathe, he found himself missing the rich oxygen of the lowlands. He reflected: “How easily we take blessings for granted until they’re gone.”

But even this discomfort was a gift. The Universe had sent him thin air as a lesson- to learn how to accept it, face it, and grow from it. By the third day, having endured the challenge, he felt renewed- back to life, full of energy.

One day, while strolling around Pineview Lake- a shimmering gem gifted by the Universe to the mountain community in Cache County- he noticed a man bent over, carefully searching for something in the water.

The old man paused. He had learned, through many trials, that joy often follows long, needle-in-a-haystack efforts.

Watching the scene unfold, he asked himself: “What is the Universe trying to show me this time?”

Twenty minutes passed. Then, a young man approached, holding a black wallet in his hand. He asked the old man if it belonged to him. He had found it in a parking lot, hundreds of meters away.

At a glance, the old man was stunned. It was his wallet- lost without his knowing. Inside were his money, credit cards, and driver’s license. This young man had walked a long way to return it to its owner.

Thanks to his honesty and effort, the old man was spared what could have been a vacation filled with stress and trouble, far from home.

Still in shock, he forgot to offer any reward- only a heartfelt “thank you” and a firm handshake. But all that day, his heart overflowed with gratitude.

He kept thinking about the encounter and quietly told himself:“This was a gift from the Universe- one I can only repay by passing it forward someday. Only then can I truly honor the priceless kindness this young man gave me.”

Yes, the Universe is always offering us gifts. And we, too, can become gift-givers to others, anytime, anywhere. These gifts come in many forms…

Sometimes, the message is direct; Sometimes, the Universe sends an “angel” to act out a lesson for us; Sometimes, it teaches through disaster, hardship, or suffering- pushing us to reflect; Sometimes, through birth and death, illness and recovery, success and failure, it opens our hearts to a deeper truth.

But these gifts only come to our doorstep. To receive them, we must open the door of our hearts—let go of ego, embrace gratitude, and keep a positive, open mind.

The old man finally understands; In the same time and place, one encounter may bring a smile, another a frown.

And so often, it all depends on how the receiver chooses to see.
