ETGBC Discover Beitou Park

(3-1) Green Library

Good morning , ladies and gentlemen ,
My name is Bill . It’s a great pleasure to introduce you one of the many hot spots in Beitou Park. It ' s not only a must
-see for tourists but also a place where folks love to go
and it is Beitou Public Library

Beito Public Library was located near the center of the park, just a little west to the Hot Spring Museum. During the Japanese occupation period, it was a stand along reading room for the hot spring bath patrons . After soaking up in the hot spring , the patrons would often read books at the library or they ' d check them out to read under the kiosk by the cascade , and once again immersed themselves in the beauty of the nature and books .

In 1 960 , the library was rebuilt into a one-story building and officially named as Beitou Library by the Yangmingshan Administration Bureau . In the eighties, the library Was no longer enough to serve the strong demands of her readers, the government decided to construct a four-story building to accommodate its increasing collection. Because of the abundant books and the quiet reading room, students in town Where often drawn to the library after school. Sometimes it was even hard to find a seat if one was too late

Unfortunately after serving people for twenty years, it was identified as an unsafe building because of serious leaking. The government decided to rebuild it. After countless discussion and careful design by a group of architects , the first green library in Taiwan - an eco-friendly architecture- finally shown before our eyes in Nov / 2006

Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Statue

(The founding father of the Rep. of China, Taiwan)

This statue has a very interesting history in it.  The original statue was erected to honor

Mr. Imura.  Mr. Imura was the mayor of Taipei City in 1910-1914.  He was the one who planned and established "Beitou Hot Spring Public Bathhouse" & "Beitou Park"in 1913.

In April of 1934, after Mr Imura left his position for 20 years, people set up this statue of Mr. Imura to commemorate and appreciate his contribution to Beitou.

In 1952, after Taiwan was returned to the Republic of China, the statue was replaced by the monument of “Commemorate of Restoration”.  And in 1965, due to 100th birthday of Dr. Sun,

“Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Statue” replaced the monument until now.  Now, the statue is not only an evidence of changes of time,

But also the rise and decline of Beitou Hot Spring Culture.

GREEN BUILDING LIBRARY

Taipei Public Library Beitou Branch

Taipei Public Library Beitou Branch is the first green library building of Taiwan. Recently, the library is awarded a special prize “the FIABCI excellenc e award”(the OSCAR of Real Estate). The building is constructed primarily by wood and steel with the appearance of a huge tree house. The slope roof design can easily collect the rainwater which is then stored and used for watering the plants.

LARGE FRENCH WINDOWS

French windows are featured on all four sides of the building, which lets in an abundance of natural lighting and allows for exquisite views of the charming natural landscape. The large windows help reducing electricity in two ways. An abundance of natural light coming in means less interior lighting is needed. Also the wide opened windows are good for ventilation, thus reducing the need for fans and air-conditioning in the library.

節能ENERGY SAVING

The lightweight material of the roof is equipped to produce solar energy which in turn generates electricity. And part of the roof is covered with 20 centimeters of soil to form a grassy slope. It provides thermal isolation. During Taipei’s chilly winters, this layer of soil helps to keep the heat inside the building, and in the hot summer, it helps to shield the building from the burning sun. (Cool in the summer and warm in the winter)

THE WOODED WALKWAY

Outside the library, the wooded walkway is contributing a green environment connection for the library and park. Human, animals and plants can walk around in harmony and use it in their way. So, that is our “Green Building Library”.

ce of the changes of time, but also the rise and decline of Beitou Hot Spring culture.
