Petuntse

  • KK[pəˋtʊntsɛ]

We may simply call it “white clay” or “kaolin clay.” It was available at Kuei Tzu Keng in Beitou. The properties of Petuntse are very suitable for making ceramic products.

In 1896, Taizan Yohei (帶山与兵衛), the 9th inheritor of Kyo-yaki (京燒) came to Beitou and established a kiln.

In 1911, Matsumoto Kametaro (松本龜太郎) established a pottery factory at Kuei Tzu Keng to produce porcelain and pottery products. He was the pioneer of Beitou-yaki (北投燒) of which the technique had the relationship with Kyomizu-yaki (清水燒).

Another Japanese by name of Kamoto Shozaburo (賀本庄三郎) also built a factory at Ding Beitou (頂北投). He was the creator of Tatun-yaki (大屯燒).

Ceramic tile was widely used for the public buildings like Zhong Shan Hall, Judicial Yuan, First Girl’s High School, etc.

In addition to the tile for construction, the products also included kitchen utensils, vase, etc. Beitou became a very important supply source for ceramic products on this island.
