南美洲的厄瓜多4月16日發生規模7.8強震，已造成至少350人死亡，超過2500人受傷，由於災情慘重，總統柯利亞表示，死亡人數恐怕會大幅增加，目前災區建築物損毀情形十分嚴重，當局加派大批人力、把握黃金時間，希望能搶救出更多生還者。
兇猛火舌不停竄出，伴隨著大量濃煙，規模7.8強震造成電線短路，引發大火，消防員忙著灌救，全國多地斷水斷電。這場地震是厄瓜多自1979年來，遭逢最大的地震，之後又發生至少230起餘震。距離震央約168公里遠的首都基多也災情慘重，當局還一度發佈海嘯警報，並下令緊急疏散危險區域的民眾。
NHK記者橫川浩士：「這裡是厄瓜多的城市瓜亞基爾，請大家往後看高速公路完全塌陷。」
厄瓜多民眾：「大家因為地震陷入恐慌，全部跑出商場等地，真的很可怕。」
許多民眾找不到親人，又得面對殘破的家園，不禁淚水潰堤，對著副總統哭訴，希望他能趕緊想辦法。
厄瓜多副總統：「我們正在與國際救援部隊合作，我要感謝委內瑞拉、墨西哥、哥倫比亞、祕魯、西班牙和歐盟這些朋友，他們迅速地做出救援回應。」
各界救災資源及醫療團隊陸續出動，當地政府派出大型機具開挖，並加派1萬3千5百名人力，希望盡快找到生還者，避難所內也有大批物資，等著發放給災民。原本在義大利進行訪問的總統柯利亞，也緊急返國坐鎮指揮，科利亞表示，目前還難以估計受災程度以及失蹤人口，死亡人數恐怕還會飆高。
強震過後，為了確認基礎設施是否受損，厄瓜多煉油廠暫時關閉，而身為全球石油輸出國的一員，厄瓜多已因為油價下滑、經濟受挫，這次災難可能再一次重創厄瓜多的經濟。（民視新聞綜合報導）
