課程概述：
1. 本課程主要介紹西方文學兩大傳統－－古典文學(古希腊文学,古罗马文学)的與希伯來聖經文學的發展－－除講述兩者個別呈現的文學特色外，並討論其在宇宙觀、人生觀、宗教、社會、歷史等重要思想層面上的差異。 
2. 透過研讀西洋文學經典作品包括史詩、悲劇與喜劇、以及文學批評等主要文類(literary genres)，讓同學對西洋文學流派及西洋文化起源有基本的概念，進一步培養賞析的能力，架構上古时代、中世纪直到文艺复兴初期的西洋文學史觀。

課程目標：
Students would be able to know how to read, understand, and appreciate the great books as well as the major literary genres of early western civilization in the context of their political, social, and intellectual background. 

課程內容：
The target texts the course covers include: 
a. History of literature (period outline): 
   (1)   Greek literature 
   (2)   Latin literature 
   (3)   Medieval literature 
   (4)   European Renaissance Literature 
b. Epic poetry (genre): Homer, Virgil, Dante Alighieri 
c. Tragedy(genre): 
   (1)   Aeschylus, Agamemnon
   (2)   Sophocles, Oedipus the King
   (3)   Euripides, Medea 
d. Comedy (genre): Aristophanes, Lysistrata
e. Bible: Old Testament, New Testament 
f. Aristotle, Poetics 
g.Augustine of Hippo, The Confessions
 
教學方式：Lectures, group studies, exercises, quizzes, etc.

評量方式： 
(1) Attendance & participation    10% 
(2) 5 Quizzes + notebook             30% 
(3) Midterm                                30% 
(4) Final                                     30%        
* Your continual presence is strongly encouraged.  Absentee’s participation grade will be deducted 1 point unless there’s physician’s stamp on your medical record card, or an invitation card from the wedding/funeral of your friends and family.
**No excuse is accepted for absence in quizzes unless it is presented prior to the test. There will be no make-up test for quizzes, midterm or final.
