Essay: 10%

We’ve watched a film “The Great Gatsby” adapted from the prominent novella by F. Scott Fitzgerald this semester. Do you like the story? Why or why not? Which episode or character interested you the most and why? Identify your feeling with one of the characters in the story and let us know how you feel if you were in his or her shoes. What would you do if you were one of them in the story? 10%

1.      “The Great Gatsby” is such a good story that makes me impressed after watching the film. The fascinating plot is just like a magic bringing readers stepping into the fictional world. The ambiguous relationship between Gatsby and Daisy serves as a catalyst to speed up the plot development. Besides, the rival antithesis of Tom and Gatsby also heat the plot. Speaking of the characters inside the story, the one interests me the most is Gatsby. He is obsessed with Daisy and makes him utmost efforts to win her heart. Although he becomes a millionaire and also a bootlegger with shady business connections, he seems that he never feels guilty of his behavior. However, I think he should be more rational handling his admiration for Daisy. If I were him, I would try to escape from the circumstances and move to another place in case I have committed the mistakes like he did. At the end, frankly speaking, I feel kind of touched when I see Gatsby’s spirit of pursuing his love without fear. Although the ending is not perfect and happy, however, I still admire this guy for “there’s something gorgeous about this person.”

2.      When I saw the name of the film, I was confused and wonder who Gatsby is and why he is great for he gave the title to the story. After reading the story, all of my confusion went gone, and I really like the film. The plots in it are so unpredictable that it inspired my curiosity and wanted to watch the whole of it. At the beginning of the film, a man is lying in the swimming pool, it motivated me to continue. Besides, I was stunned by the complicated relationship of the characters. They seemingly have no connection but actually they do. Additionally, Gatsby interests me the most because his background is a mystery. He is so naive that he embroiled in many things which have nothing to do with him. For example, he is misunderstood to be the cause of Myrtle’s death and finally got killed. However, I think Daisy is the worst character in the film for her vanity and ambiguous relationship between Tom and Gatsby. She loved neither one of them but still takes their advantages. For example, she pretends to love Gatsby in order to fulfill her vanity, but she really wants the fame and wealth of her husband Tom. If I were Daisy, I would leave them for I can’t cheat on my own heart.

3.      I love the story so much! At first, I thought it must not as good as the new one. But I changed my mind after watching it, it was actually better than the new one. It didn’t use exaggeratedly gorgeous clothes to show the plots, it expressed the plots by pure emotions instead! The issue in it interested me a lot, it showed the real situations that often exist in the society, and that makes me think deeply toward my life. The episode regarding the maintainer asked Gatsby if the pool needs to be cleaned impressed me a lot. Gatsby said he hadn’t step in the pool through the whole summer. Just like many people who take efforts to become wealthy but forget to stop and enjoy what they earned. Then, Gatsby lies down on the raft freely and cozy. Soon, the phone rang, the moment he had waited for a long time eventually came. But at the same time, the moment he might expect also came surprisingly and cruelly. The episode has occupied in my mind for a long time. If I were Gatsby, even if I can’t forget the sweet memories with Daisy, I would not disturb her because she has already married to someone else. I would keep her in my heart and move on, for the love staying in the old days should not retard my new life. I would love myself more and live happily.
