This system restricts access to certain diagnostic functions—like clearing fault codes or running bidirectional tests—unless the vehicle’s gateway is unlocked. In this guide, we’ll walk through the SFD unlocking process using Topdon Phoenix Series tools, highlighting the differences from the Topdon One Series and focusing on the annual subscription method (not token-based).

Before You Start: Key Requirements

• A Topdon Phoenix Series diagnostic tool (Phoenix Smart/Max/Xlink/Remote etc).

• A VCI connected to the vehicle.

• Stable battery voltage (engine off, ignition on).

• An active SFD annual subscription tied to your Topdon account email.

• A smartphone with an authenticator app (e.g., Google Authenticator).

 Important: Your SFD subscription is linked to your login email, not your tool. If you own multiple Topdon tools, log in with the same email to share the subscription.

NOTE: This tutorial is ONLY for the annual SFD unlocking package, NOT the one-time SFD unlocking.

Step 1 – Run an Auto Scan

1. Connect your VCI to the vehicle.

2. Turn the ignition on (engine off).

3. On your Phoenix tool, tap Auto Scan.

4. Start the scan. You may see an SFD prompt before the topology menu appears—or you may need to access the gateway manually. This varies by tool and vehicle.

Step 2 – Access the Gateway (Address 19)

SFD unlocking is managed through the gateway module (address 19).

1. From the topology screen, select the Gateway (look for the circle around address 19).

2. Tap Enter.

3. Scroll down and select SFD, vehicle diagnostic protection activation.

Step 3 – Verify or Purchase SFD Access

Once inside the SFD menu, you’ll see:

• Your tool’s serial number

• Your logged-in account (email)

• Your SFD subscription status and expiration date

• If you already have a subscription, tap Next.

• If you have never set up SFD, tap Purchase Now.

Registration requires identity verification. You’ll need to upload a driver’s license or passport and later set up an authenticator app.

Step 4 – Enter Credentials and Unlock

After purchasing and activating SFD on your account:

1. Confirm your account information and tool serial number.

2. The tool will show the vehicle’s VIN.

3. Enter your account password.

4. Tap Unlocking.

If this is your first time, you’ll be guided to:

• Install an authenticator app on your phone.

• Scan a QR code and enter the generated 6-digit code.

Once the two-factor authentication is complete, proceed to activation.

Step 5 – Online Activation

1. On the SFD activation screen, tap Online Activation (not Manual SFD activation, which is for token-based use).

2. The tool will display:

   • Remaining unlock permissions (unlimited with annual plan)

   • Your expiration date

3. Tap Next.

A confirmation message will appear: “Successfully unlocked the gateway.”

Step 6 – Verify Unlock Success

1. Tap OK, then use the back button (top left) to exit the SFD screen.

2. Still inside the gateway (address 19), tap Read DTCs.

3. You should see fault code B184C00 – Activation Active.
   This is normal and confirms SFD authentication is active.

How Long Does the Unlock Last?

• The gateway remains unlocked for approximately 90 minutes or until you manually relock it via the SFD menu.

• During this time, you can perform all restricted operations: clear codes, run bidirectional controls, etc.
