1. Response Paper on “Much Ado about Nothing”2011/06/18 17:22
How many people nowadays can one hundred percent true to his or herself? Is it possible for us to directly express our feelings of love out loud in this realistic society? In this film, Beatrice and Benedick both talk a mile a minute and proclaim their scorn for love, marriage, and each other.
Beatrice and Benedick are the most interesting characters in this film. In the bottom of their heart, they are deeply addicted to each other. But somehow they just couldn’t admit it. Instead of being nice to each other, they choose to say mean words to each other. With secretly helped by their friends, Beatrice and Benedick start to be true to their heart.
Is love really that complex that you have thought in one way and behave in another? Love is like a game full of skepticism. People who are in love will be a little worried. But what we really fear to face is not others, is you. We are afraid to show our weakness in front of the person we love. That’s why Beatrice and Benedick have to say mean words to each others, it’s like an armed in order to make them looks tough. And at last, Benedick and Beatrice are tricked into confessing their love for each other.
In contrast, Claudio and Hero are sweet young people who are rendered practically speechless by their love for one another. Hero is a beautiful, gentle and kind. But was set up by the one she helped most, Don John. It is really ironical, just like the movie Patch Adams. Patch dedicate is whole life helping others, but his wife eventually being set up and killed by a patient. Kind-hearted Hero also helped Don. But Don screwed up her wedding just out of his own jealousy. In this triangular relationship, I’m really doubt about Claudio’s feeling to Hero. Love has to be basic on trust. Trust is the most important thing. But how come Claudio was so easy to be deceived by Don,
This is an interesting movie. Love is a cliché subject. But still, we can’t even figure it out.

What exactly is love? Throughout the human history, we consider love to be complicated, mysterious, indefinable and difficult. Love is a subject of endless poem and literature works. There is a large amount of material available out there about love. And what is freedom in another hand? Is it when you could choose who to love?
In the ancient Chinese, women could get married with someone they don’t even ever see before. As society improve with time, women’s social standing gets higher and higher, almost equal as men. Women have their own chance to pursue the love they want. But, is this kind of gender equality and freedom can really let love be more pure and sacred? In this film, Isabel seemed had the freedom to choose the life she likes. There’s an old saying, “Life is dear, and love is dearer. Both can be given up for freedom.” For freedom, she turned down the proposing of a chance to live wealthy ever after. Instead, she went to Europe to broaden her horizon.
The whole trip to Europe turns out to be a biggest mistake. As audiences, we could easily see through the scheme that Gilbert Osmond and Madame Merle set up for Isabel. But if we put ourselves in Isabel’s shoes, aren’t we also getting lost in our own relationships in our life? To do something under our free will is what we are longing for centuries. Ironically, we are fooled by it, too. There’s another sarcasm point in this film. Isabel’s cousin, Ralph Touchett, talked his father into giving Isabel large amount money. Enable her to pursue her dream, and don’t have to marry someone because of money. But Isabel end up revealed that her husband married her because of her money. How ironically it is.
Besides, I don’t think the director of this film did a great job on choosing the actors. For example, Gilbert Osmond should be a gentle, elegant and suave man who collects arts. But in the film, frankly speaking, the first time I saw this character, I directly thought of the pedophilia in the movie Con Air. And I have no idea why Isabel will fall for him. Jane Campion should have chosen a better actor for this character. It’s not about the acting; it’s all about the image that John Malkovich gives the audience isn’t correspond with the character’s it should be.
Personally, I’m not very fond of this film. I don’t know if it’s because the movie is a little bit old or if it’s too long and have no impressive climax, or perhaps both of them. I think Nichole Kidman is a really gorgeous and great actress. I think she is the motive power that I could watch through the whole movie.
