1. My Reflection on “Much Ado about Nothing”2011/06/18 17:26
In the beginning of this play, Leonato prepares to welcome some of his friend home. The friends included Don Pedro, a prince who is Leonato’s best friend, and two fellow friends: Claudio and Benedick. Don John who is Don Pedro’s bastard half-brother was also followed. When they arrived, Claudio fell in love with Hero at the first sight. Almost at the same time, Beatrice and Benedick soon fell secretly in love with each other because the others played some trick upon both of them. But Don John made Claudio to Believed that Hero had unfaithful to him, and wrecked the wedding. Fortunately, Dogberry and Verges had arrested Borachio and Conrad, which can proved the innocent of Hero. In the end of the film, everyone danced for the happy ending.
The main characters were Benedick, Don John, Don Pedro, Beatrice, Leonato, Dogberry, Claudio and Hero. I had noticed Robert Sean Leonard who acted as Claudio, because I was very impressed by his foolishness and emotional. He begged Don Pedro to propose to Hero, that made me thought he was a coward, because he was afraid to be refused, had no courage to face the risk.
Also, when he saw Margaret at Hero’s window in the darkness of the night, he didn’t even want to say something for her. I’m very doubt whether he really loved Hero, or he just loved a pure, rich and pretty girl who can intensify his own reputation? It even couldn’t be call as “love” in my view. He just takes what he needed and abandoned what might endanger him. So I don’t think he was that into Hero like the play showed. On the other hand, the love between Benedick and Beatrice touched me. Though they love to argue with each other, but I think that’s the way they been together. It’s very lucky to have a person who was just as witty as you.
2. My Reflection on “Pride and Prejudice”2011/06/20 11:56
In this film, Mr. Bennet is an English gentleman living in Hartfordshire with his overbearing wife. Their lives are turned upside down when Mr. Bingley and Mr. Darcy arrived in their neighborhood. The Bennets attend a ball at which Mr. Bingley is present. He is taken with Jane and spends much of the evening dancing with her. But at the same time Mr. Darcy refused to dance with Elizabeth, which makes everyone view him as arrogant and obnoxious. Then the girls had become friendly with militia officers stationed in a nearby town. Wickham tells Elizabeth how Darcy cruelly cheated him out of an inheritance. Suddenly, Mr. Bingley and Darcy return to London without any warning. In a few days, Elizabeth visits Charlotte and encounters Darcy’s aunt and Darcy. Darcy made a shocking proposal of marriage, which Elizabeth quickly refused. She scolded him for steering Bingley away from Jane and disinheriting Wickham. Before Darcy left, he delivered a letter to her for explaining the reason. Soon, Lydia has eloped with Wickham. In the end, Mr. Bingley renews his acquaintance with Jane and a proposal quickly follows which is joyfully accepted.
This film’s protagonist is Elizabeth Bennet, who is the most intelligent and witty. But she almost destroyed her opportunity with Darcy because she thought too highly of herself. The title of the “pride” meant she had far too much pride; she just didn’t want to admit her own feeling to Mr. Darcy. And the “prejudice” meant the others’ prejudice against Mr. Darcy who had no societal savoir-faire and with a stupid tongue. Keira Knightley has a smart face and she performed Elizabeth’s neurotic about getting married very well. Matthew Macfadyen wasn’t that handsome when I first saw him in this play, I even didn’t like him, but his letter changed my impression. I think he is a good actor because he can let the audiences put themselves into this play.
My favorite actor is Donald Sutherland, Mr. Bennet. Though he wasn’t the main characters, but the way he respect his daughters’ willing and tried to against for it with his silly wife made me think he is a wisdom father. The ridiculous event about Lydia and Wickham made me felt sick and frivolousness, but it reminds me maybe that’s how frivolous the teenagers we were.
