1. Reflection on "Pride and Prejudice" 2011/06/08 00:21
This is a film based on Jane Austin’s novel with same name. This film has two versions and I only saw 2005 version. The story focus on a woman fights the society value and pursues her true love. I like the actress, she plays the protagonist Elizabeth well in this film and in the movie they discuss the women have more chance to choose her husband, but I cannot feel she loves Dr. Darcy through the movie. I only can see little hint. All I can see is Elizabeth have a fight or argument with Mr. Darcy.
In 19 century, women cannot inherit the property, that’s why Mrs. Bennet marries all her five daughters in a hurry. Compares to middle age, all women cannot decide her marriage. In 19 century, women have more opportunities to marry her true love. In the movie, Elizabeth rejects Mr. Collin’s proposal because she does not love him, but Charlotte Lucas, Elizabeth’s best friend, marry Mr. Collin because she is almost 30 and she doesn’t want to become her parents’ mental burden.
I know that Elizabeth will marry Mr. Darcy at the end of the film, but I only can see a little hint to show that Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy loves each other. Form the beginning of the movie, Mr. Darcy gives Elizabeth a cold attitude when she invites him dance. They argue in a raining day after they worship, then, Mr. Darcy suddenly makes a proposal to Elizabeth. She refuses him, of course. And after few days, Mr. Darcy writes a long letter for Elizabeth explains his action. How odd that a man proposes after an argument and writes a letter rather than communicate with Elizabeth.
There are two most impression sections that touch my heart when I saw this film. One is that Elizabeth is sitting on a swing, which is rotating, in a raining day and thinking about herself, then her best friend, Charlotte Lucas, told her that she will marry Mr. Collin. She was shocked and cannot say a word and finally she started to think with a sorrow appearance. I can still recall her face. Another one is when Elizabeth faces Lady Catherine de Bourgh. Elizabeth conveys her opinion to her and rejects Lady Catherine de Bourgh’s request, not to marry Mr. Darcy. The actress plays this role well, she express the character’s personality.

2. "The Hours" 2011/06/08 00:22
This film is derived from Michael Cunningham’s same named novel. The story focuses on three different women in three different periods, Virginia Woolf, a writer, in 1920s, Laura Brown, a pregnant woman with unhappy marriage in 1951 and Clarissa Vaughan, an editor, in 2001. Personally, I think this film give audience to deliberate some issues that all humans would face, for example, solitude, death, and depression. You can see the director use stream of consciousness in the whole movie. Three women in different generations but face the same issues.
The most impression issue for me is solitude and depression, we all feel lonely and sad sometimes. In this movie, we can see three different ways to fight solitude and how to deal with their depression. Clarissa prepares the party for Richard, a poet and an author won an award of his achievement. She invites all friends; she even invites Richard’s ex-partner, Louis. She keeps convincing Richard to attend the party and prepare all details about the party. She is busy but disturbed. Finally, she cries herself in the kitchen; she realizes that she held parties to hide her solitude. Laura Brown, she leaves her son to her neighbor and escape to town. Virginia Woolf, she writes her all her feeling in her book.
The second issue is talking about death. Everyone will die and most of us are afraid; what attitude should we take when we face the death. In 1950s section, Laura Brown, who has had her second child with unhappy marriage, want to die during the film. She drives out to town and rents a room in hotel. At first, she wants to suicide by eating some medicine. Finally, she quits killing herself because of her morality and her family. She decides to leave after her second child was born. At the end of the film, Laura is Richard’s mother in 2001 section. Laura wants to die but she can’t and all her family members die before her. She also tells Clarissa why she left her family.
I like the way to tell a story. At first, I only see these three independent plots and confuse why the director put them all together. During the movie, the stories seem have something similar. At the end of the film, we can find out that Richard is a character in Virginia Woolf’s novel, Laura Brown is Richard’s mother and Clarissa is Richard’s friend. The director use the time line to connect the whole movie.
