1. “Oliver Twist": a Review 2011/06/18 17:14

Oliver Twist is a movie adapted by Charles Dickens' classic 1838 novel. It was finished by four countries’ corporation (British, France, Italy and Czech Republic ) in 2005. The story described an orphan Oliver who struggling to survive amongst thieves in London . The director, Roman Polanski even added his childhood memories in the movie, so the movie was a little different from the original version.

The storyline started at an orphan Oliver who was born in the orphanage. Just like other orphans, Oliver was sent to the workhouse for survival and hardworking. In the workhouse, all the children had merely empty food for gorge themselves. Therefore, Oliver asked for more food but was kicked out from the workhouse. Then he had been sent to the coffin-maker’s shop. To escape from the insulted and abused, Oliver ran out the shop and tried to go to London . After arrived in London , Oliver met a pickpocket known as the Artful Dodger. Dodger gave Oliver food and promised to provide him shelter and introduced Oliver to Fagin. Fagin was the leader of criminal gang, but the innocent Oliver did not know that Fagin do was training kids to be pickpockets and sold off the things what they steal. Luckily, Oliver met the gentleman Mr. Brownlow who helped Oliver to get rid of the poverty life. But like the other orphans, they still have to face their tough life.

Through the movie, I saw the wealth and prosperity of London but also found out the dark and coldness life of less privileged people. The house and the life Oliver lead was grubby and dirty. In contrast, the environment where Mr. Brownlow lives was a comfortable and luxury life. The story vividly characterized the life and perspective of both side classes in Victorian society. In the movie, Oliver's most famous line Please, sir, I want some more. told the audience about the child labors problems and exposed the truth of how the employer treated and exploited to those children. The character Fagin played by Ben Kingsley also impressed me a lot. He behaved the less privileged people who have no choose but still have to lead their life.

On the other hand, in the 2005 version, the scriptwriter cut the subplot about Oliver’s mother. But I think it is the very important plot in the story. Without the storyline of Oliver’s mother, we did not know that the true relationship of Oliver and Brownlow except the audience have been read the original novel by Dickens. For me, I like the story that telling us no matter how tough environment you face, you still have your faith to keep in mind.

2. “The Hours": a Review 2011/06/18 17:12

The Hours was the movie adapted by Michael Cunningham’s same name novel. The novel won Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and Faulkner Award in 1999. The film was released in 2002 and received nine Academy Award nominations including Best picture and Best actress. (Nicole Kidman act as Virginia Woolf) The whole story around the three main characters: Virginia Woolf, Laura Brown and Clarissa Vaughan.

The story began as Mrs. Dalloway said she would buy the flowers herself… and the director uses three frame take a quickly view portrayal of three women. The character of Clarissa Vaughan impressed me the most. She was a 52-year-old book editor who lives in Greenwich Village at the end of the twentieth century. Besides, Clarissa shops for flowers and her daily life are just paralleled that of Woolf's Mrs. Dalloway. The life of Clarissa was always devoted herself to caring for her best friend and former lover, Richard, a brilliant poet who is dying of AIDS. Since Clarissa started with a preparation of an award party for Richard, she began to think her life with effort and joint, awareness that her own life and needs.

Another actress, Julianne Moore acted as Laura Brown did a brilliant job. She acted a pregnant 1950s California housewife with a young boy and an unhappy marriage. She was unsatisfied with her life but cannot change. Sometimes she found it was hard to playing the role of wife to Dan, and being a mother to her son Richie. She wanted to comment suicide, but the “love” of her husband and her son grabbed her back to the real life. At the end of movie, the ironic scene showed up that Laura appeared at Clarissa’s house because of Richie’s death. She was so eager to die during her whole life but all her family members is dead before her.

Nicole Kidman acted as Virginia Woolf, a gifted writer battling depression in the 1920s. I still clearly remembered the quote in the movie said, You live with the threat, you tell me you live with the threat of my extinction. And Someone has to die in order that the rest of us should value life more. It's contrast. The scripted totally illustrated Virginia ’s state of mind to pursuit the peace and balance. Seemingly, the story reflected a woman's whole life in a single day. Instead, it reflected everyone’s quest from heart. What is the goal of our life? Do we lead a good life? And is it something that worth us to pursue? Though the movie was some kind of seriously, but it reminds me those quest and question in mind.
